Chalisa

A chalisa is a devotional hymn of forty verses — simple, rhythmic chaupais composed for heartfelt recitation rather than priestly ritual. The form follows Goswami Tulsidas's sixteenth-century Hanuman Chalisa, whose mould later poets used for nearly every god and goddess. Devotees recite a chalisa daily, or on the deity's special day of the week, to invoke blessing and protection. This library holds chalisas of more than fifty gods and goddesses, each with the original Devanagari, transliteration, and Hindi and English meaning.
