श्री महावीर चालीसा

शीश नवा अरिहन्त को, सिद्धन करूँ प्रणाम।
उपाध्याय आचार्य का, ले सुखकारी नाम॥

śīśa navā arihanta ko, siddhana karūm̐ praṇāma।
upādhyāya ācārya kā, le sukhakārī nāma॥

shīsh navā arihant ko, siddhan karūn pranām,
upādhyāy āchārya kā, le sukhakārī nām.

मैं अरिहन्त को सिर नवाता हूँ, और सिद्धों को प्रणाम करता हूँ; उपाध्याय और आचार्य का सुखकारी नाम लेता हूँ।

Bowing my head to the Arihantas, I salute the Siddhas, and take the joy-giving names of the Upadhyayas and Acharyas.

सर्व साधु और सरस्वती, जिन मन्दिर सुखकार।
महावीर भगवान को, मन-मन्दिर में धार॥

sarva sādhu aura sarasvatī, jina mandira sukhakāra।
mahāvīra bhagavāna ko, mana-mandira meṁ dhāra॥

sarv sādhu aur sarasvatī, jin mandir sukhakār,
mahāvīr bhagavān ko, man-mandir men dhār.

सब साधुओं और सरस्वती को (नमन करके), जिन-मंदिर सुख देने वाला है; मैं महावीर भगवान को अपने मन-मंदिर में धारण करता हूँ।

Honouring all the Sadhus, Sarasvati and the blissful Jina temples, I enshrine Bhagwan Mahavir in the temple of my heart.

जय महावीर दयालु स्वामी। वीर प्रभु तुम जग में नामी॥

jaya mahāvīra dayālu svāmī। vīra prabhu tuma jaga meṁ nāmī॥

jai mahāvīr dayālu svāmī, vīr prabhu tum jag men nāmī.

हे दयालु स्वामी महावीर! आपकी जय हो; हे वीर प्रभु! आप जगत में प्रसिद्ध हैं।

Victory, O compassionate Lord Mahavir; brave Lord, you are renowned in the world.

वर्धमान है नाम तुम्हारा। लगे हृदय को प्यारा प्यारा॥

vardhamāna hai nāma tumhārā। lage hṛdaya ko pyārā pyārā॥

vardhamān hai nām tumhārā, lage hriday ko pyārā pyārā.

आपका नाम वर्धमान है, जो हृदय को प्यारा-प्यारा लगता है।

Vardhamana is your name, ever dearer and dearer to the heart.

शांति छवि और मोहनी मूरत। शान हँसीली सोहनी सूरत॥

śāṁti chavi aura mohanī mūrata। śāna ham̐sīlī sohanī sūrata॥

shānti chhavi aur mohanī mūrat, shān hansīlī sohanī sūrat.

आपकी छवि शांत और मूर्ति मनमोहक है; आपकी सूरत हँसीली और शानदार है।

An image of peace, a captivating form; a smiling, splendid, beautiful face.

तुमने वेश दिगम्बर धारा। कर्म-शत्रु भी तुम से हारा॥

tumane veśa digambara dhārā। karma-śatru bhī tuma se hārā॥

tumane vesh digambar dhārā, karm-shatru bhī tum se hārā.

आपने दिगम्बर वेश धारण किया; कर्म रूपी शत्रु भी आपसे हार गए।

You took on the sky-clad Digambara state, and even the enemy karma was defeated by you.

क्रोध मान अरु लोभ भगाया। महा-मोह तुमसे डर खाया॥

krodha māna aru lobha bhagāyā। mahā-moha tumase ḍara khāyā॥

krodh mān aru lobh bhagāyā, mahā-moh tumase dar khāyā.

आपने क्रोध, मान और लोभ को भगा दिया; महामोह भी आपसे डर गया।

You drove away anger, pride and greed; great delusion itself trembled before you.

तू सर्वज्ञ सर्व का ज्ञाता। तुझको दुनिया से क्या नाता॥

tū sarvajña sarva kā jñātā। tujhako duniyā se kyā nātā॥

tū sarvagya sarv kā gyātā, tujhako duniyā se kyā nātā.

आप सर्वज्ञ और सबके ज्ञाता हैं; आपका दुनिया से क्या नाता (आप निर्लिप्त हैं)?

Omniscient, knower of all — what tie binds you to the world?

तुझमें नहीं राग और द्वेष। वीर रण राग तू हितोपदेश॥

tujhameṁ nahīṁ rāga aura dveṣa। vīra raṇa rāga tū hitopadeśa॥

tujhamen nahīn rāg aur dvesh, vīr ran rāg tū hitopadesh.

आप में राग और द्वेष नहीं है; हे वीर! आप रण में (कर्मों से) जूझते हुए हितकारी उपदेश देने वाले हैं।

In you is neither attachment nor aversion; warring against passion, O Vira, you give beneficent teaching.

तेरा नाम जगत में सच्चा। जिसको जाने बच्चा बच्चा॥

terā nāma jagata meṁ saccā। jisako jāne baccā baccā॥

terā nām jagat men sachchā, jisako jāne bachchā bachchā.

जगत में आपका नाम सच्चा है, जिसे बच्चा-बच्चा जानता है।

Your name is true in all the world; every child knows it.

भूत प्रेत तुम से भय खावें। व्यन्तर राक्षस सब भग जावें॥

bhūta preta tuma se bhaya khāveṁ। vyantara rākṣasa saba bhaga jāveṁ॥

bhūt pret tum se bhay khāven, vyantar rākshas sab bhag jāven.

भूत-प्रेत आपसे भयभीत होते हैं; व्यन्तर और राक्षस सब भाग जाते हैं।

Ghosts and spirits fear you; vyantaras and rakshasas all flee.

महा व्याध मारी न सतावे। महा विकराल काल डर खावे॥

mahā vyādha mārī na satāve। mahā vikarāla kāla ḍara khāve॥

mahā vyādh mārī na satāve, mahā vikarāl kāl dar khāve.

महामारी और रोग नहीं सताते; महाविकराल काल भी (आपसे) डरता है।

No great disease or plague torments your devotee; even most dreadful Death is afraid.

काला नाग होय फन धारी। या हो शेर भयंकर भारी॥

kālā nāga hoya phana dhārī। yā ho śera bhayaṁkara bhārī॥

kālā nāg hoy phan dhārī, yā ho sher bhayankar bhārī.

चाहे फन उठाए काला नाग हो, या भयंकर भारी शेर हो —

Be it a black cobra with hood spread, or a great and terrible lion —

ना हो कोई बचाने वाला। स्वामी तुम्हीं करो प्रतिपाला॥

nā ho koī bacāne vālā। svāmī tumhīṁ karo pratipālā॥

nā ho koī bachāne vālā, svāmī tumhīn karo pratipālā.

और कोई बचाने वाला न हो — हे स्वामी! तब आप ही रक्षा करते हैं।

when there is none else to save, you alone, O Lord, give protection.

अग्नि दावानल सुलग रही हो। तेज हवा से भड़क रही हो॥

agni dāvānala sulaga rahī ho। teja havā se bhaṛaka rahī ho॥

agni dāvānal sulag rahī ho, tej havā se bharak rahī ho.

दावानल (जंगल की आग) सुलग रही हो, और तेज हवा से भड़क रही हो —

Though a forest fire be smouldering and flaring in a fierce wind,

नाम तुम्हारा सब दुख खोवे। आग एकदम ठण्डी होवे॥

nāma tumhārā saba dukha khove। āga ekadama ṭhaṇḍī hove॥

nām tumhārā sab dukh khove, āg ekadam thandī hove.

तो आपका नाम सब दुःख हर लेता है; आग एकदम ठंडी हो जाती है।

your name destroys all distress, and the fire at once grows cold.

हिंसामय था भारत सारा। तब तुमने कीना निस्तारा॥

hiṁsāmaya thā bhārata sārā। taba tumane kīnā nistārā॥

hinsāmay thā bhārat sārā, tab tumane kīnā nistārā.

सारा भारत हिंसामय था, तब आपने (अहिंसा का उपदेश देकर उसका) उद्धार किया।

All Bharat was steeped in violence; then you wrought its deliverance.

जनम लिया कुण्डलपुर नगरी। हुई सुखी तब प्रजा सगरी॥

janama liyā kuṇḍalapura nagarī। huī sukhī taba prajā sagarī॥

janam liyā kundalapur nagarī, huī sukhī tab prajā sagarī.

आपने कुण्डलपुर नगरी में जन्म लिया; तब सारी प्रजा सुखी हो गई।

You took birth in the city of Kundalpur, and all the people knew happiness.

सिद्धारथ जी पिता तुम्हारे। त्रिशला के आँखों के तारे॥

siddhāratha jī pitā tumhāre। triśalā ke ām̐khoṁ ke tāre॥

siddhārath jī pitā tumhāre, trishalā ke ānkhon ke tāre.

सिद्धार्थ जी आपके पिता थे, और आप त्रिशला की आँखों के तारे थे।

Siddhartha was your father; you were the star of Trishala's eyes.

छोड़ सभी झंझट संसारी। स्वामी हुए बाल-ब्रह्मचारी॥

choṛa sabhī jhaṁjhaṭa saṁsārī। svāmī hue bāla-brahmacārī॥

chhor sabhī jhanjhat sansārī, svāmī hue bāl-brahmachārī.

आपने संसार के सब झंझट छोड़ दिए; हे स्वामी! आप बाल-ब्रह्मचारी हुए।

Leaving all worldly entanglements, the Lord remained celibate from his very boyhood.

पंचम काल महा-दुखदाई। चाँदनपुर महिमा दिखलाई॥

paṁcama kāla mahā-dukhadāī। cām̐danapura mahimā dikhalāī॥

pancham kāl mahā-dukhadāī, chāndanapur mahimā dikhalāī.

यह पंचम काल महा दुःख देने वाला है; (इसमें) आपने चाँदनपुर (में अपनी) महिमा दिखाई।

In the fifth age, so full of sorrow, you revealed your glory at Chandanpur.

टीले में अतिशय दिखलाया। एक गाय का दूध गिराया॥

ṭīle meṁ atiśaya dikhalāyā। eka gāya kā dūdha girāyā॥

tīle men atishay dikhalāyā, ek gāy kā dūdh girāyā.

एक टीले में आपने अतिशय (चमत्कार) दिखाया, जहाँ एक गाय ने (स्वयं अपना) दूध गिराया।

In a mound you showed a wonder: a cow let down her milk upon it.

सोच हुआ मन में ग्वाले के। पहुँचा एक फावड़ा लेके॥

soca huā mana meṁ gvāle ke। pahum̐cā eka phāvaṛā leke॥

soch huā man men gvāle ke, pahunchā ek phāvarā leke.

ग्वाले के मन में संदेह हुआ; वह एक फावड़ा लेकर वहाँ पहुँचा।

Wonder rose in the cowherd's mind; he came back carrying a spade.

सारा टीला खोद बगाया। तब तुमने दर्शन दिखलाया॥

sārā ṭīlā khoda bagāyā। taba tumane darśana dikhalāyā॥

sārā tīlā khod bagāyā, tab tumane darshan dikhalāyā.

उसने सारा टीला खोद डाला, तब आपने (अपनी मूर्ति का) दर्शन दिखाया।

He dug the whole mound away — and then you granted your darshan.

जोधराज को दुख ने घेरा। उसने नाम जपा जब तेरा॥

jodharāja ko dukha ne gherā। usane nāma japā jaba terā॥

jodharāj ko dukh ne gherā, usane nām japā jab terā.

जोधराज को जब दुःख ने घेरा, तब उसने आपका नाम जपा।

When sorrow beset Jodhraj and he chanted your name,

ठंडा हुआ तोप का गोला। तब सब ने जयकारा बोला॥

ṭhaṁḍā huā topa kā golā। taba saba ne jayakārā bolā॥

thandā huā top kā golā, tab sab ne jayakārā bolā.

(तब) तोप का गोला ठंडा हो गया; तब सबने जयकारा बोला।

the cannonball itself grew cold, and all cried out your victory.

मंत्री ने मन्दिर बनवाया। राजा ने भी द्रव्य लगाया॥

maṁtrī ne mandira banavāyā। rājā ne bhī dravya lagāyā॥

mantrī ne mandir banavāyā, rājā ne bhī dravya lagāyā.

मंत्री ने मंदिर बनवाया, और राजा ने भी द्रव्य (धन) लगाया।

The minister had a temple built, and the king too gave of his wealth.

बड़ी धर्मशाला बनवाई। तुमको लाने को ठहराई॥

baṛī dharmaśālā banavāī। tumako lāne ko ṭhaharāī॥

barī dharmashālā banavāī, tumako lāne ko thaharāī.

आपको लाने के लिए एक बड़ी धर्मशाला बनवाई गई।

A great dharamshala was raised, and plans were laid to carry you there.

तुमने तोड़ी बीसों गाड़ी। पहिया खसका नहीं अगाड़ी॥

tumane toṛī bīsoṁ gāṛī। pahiyā khasakā nahīṁ agāṛī॥

tumane torī bīson gārī, pahiyā khasakā nahīn agārī.

आपने बीसों गाड़ियाँ तोड़ दीं, पर (रथ का) पहिया आगे नहीं खिसका।

You broke twenty carts; not a wheel would budge forward.

ग्वाले ने जो हाथ लगाया। फिर तो रथ चलता ही पाया॥

gvāle ne jo hātha lagāyā। phira to ratha calatā hī pāyā॥

gvāle ne jo hāth lagāyā, phir to rath chalatā hī pāyā.

जब ग्वाले ने हाथ लगाया, तभी रथ चलता हुआ पाया गया।

But when the cowherd set his hand to it, the chariot at once moved on.

पहिले दिन बैशाख बदी के। रथ जाता है तीर नदी के॥

pahile dina baiśākha badī ke। ratha jātā hai tīra nadī ke॥

pahile din baishākh badī ke, rath jātā hai tīr nadī ke.

वैशाख बदी के पहले दिन, रथ नदी के तट पर जाता है।

On the first day of the dark fortnight of Vaishakha, the chariot goes to the river's bank.

मीना गूजर सब ही आते। नाच-कूद सब चित उमगाते॥

mīnā gūjara saba hī āte। nāca-kūda saba cita umagāte॥

mīnā gūjar sab hī āte, nāch-kūd sab chit umagāte.

मीना और गूजर सब आते हैं; नाचते-कूदते सब अपना चित्त उमंग से भर लेते हैं।

Minas and Gujjars all come, dancing and leaping with hearts overflowing.

स्वामी तुमने प्रेम निभाया। ग्वाले का बहु मान बढ़ाया॥

svāmī tumane prema nibhāyā। gvāle kā bahu māna baṛhāyā॥

svāmī tumane prem nibhāyā, gvāle kā bahu mān barhāyā.

हे स्वामी! आपने (ग्वाले से) प्रेम निभाया, और उस ग्वाले का बहुत मान बढ़ाया।

O Lord, you kept faith with love, and greatly exalted the cowherd's honour:

हाथ लगे ग्वाले का जब ही। स्वामी रथ चलता है तब ही॥

hātha lage gvāle kā jaba hī। svāmī ratha calatā hai taba hī॥

hāth lage gvāle kā jab hī, svāmī rath chalatā hai tab hī.

हे स्वामी! जब ग्वाले का हाथ लगता है, तभी रथ चलता है।

only when the cowherd's hand has touched it does the Lord's chariot move.

मेरी है टूटी सी नैया। तुम बिन कोई नहीं खिवैया॥

merī hai ṭūṭī sī naiyā। tuma bina koī nahīṁ khivaiyā॥

merī hai tūtī sī naiyā, tum bin koī nahīn khivaiyā.

मेरी टूटी-सी नैया है; आपके बिना कोई खेवनहार (नाविक) नहीं है।

My boat is broken and frail, and without you there is no boatman.

मुझ पर स्वामी जरा कृपा कर। मैं हूँ प्रभु तुम्हारा चाकर॥

mujha para svāmī jarā kṛpā kara। maiṁ hūm̐ prabhu tumhārā cākara॥

mujh par svāmī jarā kripā kar, main hūn prabhu tumhārā chākar.

हे स्वामी! मुझ पर ज़रा कृपा कीजिए; हे प्रभु! मैं आपका सेवक हूँ।

Show me a little grace, O Lord; I am your servant, my Master.

तुम से मैं अरु कछु नहीं चाहूँ। जन्म-जन्म तेरे दर्शन पाऊँ॥

tuma se maiṁ aru kachu nahīṁ cāhūm̐। janma-janma tere darśana pāūm̐॥

tum se main aru kachhu nahīn chāhūn, janm-janm tere darshan pāūn.

मैं आपसे और कुछ नहीं चाहता; बस जन्म-जन्म तेरे दर्शन पाऊँ।

I ask nothing else of you — only that birth after birth I may behold you.

चालीसे को चन्द्र बनावे। बीर प्रभु को शीश नवावे॥

cālīse ko candra banāve। bīra prabhu ko śīśa navāve॥

chālīse ko chandra banāve, bīr prabhu ko shīsh navāve.

'चन्द्र' (कवि) इस चालीसे को बनाता है, और वीर प्रभु को सिर नवाता है।

Chandra composes this chalisa and bows his head to Lord Vira.

नित चालीसहि बार, पाठ करे चालीस दिन।
खेय सुगन्ध अपार, वर्धमान के सामने॥

nita cālīsahi bāra, pāṭha kare cālīsa dina।
kheya sugandha apāra, vardhamāna ke sāmane॥

nit chālīsahi bār, pāth kare chālīs din,
khey sugandh apār, vardhamān ke sāmane.

जो चालीस दिन तक नित्य चालीस बार पाठ करता है, और वर्धमान के सामने अपार सुगंध जलाता है —

Whoever recites this forty times daily for forty days, burning abundant fragrant incense before Vardhamana —

होय कुबेर समान, जन्म दरिद्री होय जो।
जिसके नहिं संतान, नाम वंश जग में चले॥

hoya kubera samāna, janma daridrī hoya jo।
jisake nahiṁ saṁtāna, nāma vaṁśa jaga meṁ cale॥

hoy kuber samān, janm daridrī hoy jo,
jisake nahin santān, nām vansh jag men chale.

वह जन्म का दरिद्र भी कुबेर के समान (धनवान) हो जाता है; और जिसके संतान नहीं, उसका नाम और वंश जगत में चलता है।

he who was born poor becomes like Kubera, and he who is childless sees his name and line continue in the world.
