Mulank & Bhagyank Calculator
Enter your date of birth to find your Mulank (birth number) and Bhagyank (destiny number), calculated exactly as described on this site.
How this is calculated. Your Mulank is the day of the month you were born on, reduced to a single digit. Your Bhagyank is every digit of your full date of birth — day, month and year — added together and reduced to a single digit. Read the full method on the numerology guide.
Indian numerology is a traditional system of interpretation offered here for study and reflection. It is not medical, psychological, financial or legal advice, and it is not a scientific prediction of events.
Indian numerology is one of the oldest and most profound of all the systems of sacred number science that the world’s wisdom traditions have developed for understanding the hidden patterns of individual destiny, personality, and spiritual purpose encoded in the numbers of a person’s date of birth. Rooted in the Vedic tradition’s most fundamental understanding of the cosmos as a fundamentally mathematical and vibrational phenomenon — in which every possible manifestation of existence arises from, is sustained by, and eventually returns to the primordial vibration of the divine creative intelligence, and in which the numbers one through nine represent the nine most fundamental modalities of that creative intelligence’s expression in the manifest world — Indian numerology offers a system of extraordinary depth, extraordinary precision, and extraordinary practical utility for understanding who we are, why we are the way we are, and what the fundamental patterns and purposes of our individual lives most essentially mean.
Unlike Western Pythagorean numerology — which assigns numbers to the letters of the alphabet and calculates personality numbers from the names of individuals — Indian numerology is rooted primarily in the numbers of the date of birth, and works with two primary numbers: the Mulank (also called Moolank, Janmank, or the birth number), which is derived from the day of birth alone and reveals the most fundamental and most immediately visible qualities of the individual’s personality, nature, and instinctive responses to the world; and the Bhagyank (also called the destiny number, the fate number, or the Bhagya number), which is derived from the complete date of birth — day, month, and year — and reveals the deeper patterns of destiny, life purpose, and the most fundamental trajectory of the individual’s journey through this incarnation.
The Nine Numbers and Their Planetary Rulers
The most fundamental and the most distinctively Vedic quality of the Indian numerology system is its assignment of each of the nine primary numbers to one of the nine Vedic grahas (planets) — and through those planetary assignments, its connection of each number to the vast and extraordinarily detailed body of Vedic astrological wisdom about the qualities, the energies, the gifts, and the challenges associated with each of the nine planetary intelligences that govern the manifest dimension of cosmic existence. The planetary rulers of the nine numbers in the Indian system are as follows:
- Number 1 — Sun (Surya): Leadership, individuality, authority, creativity, the solar principle of self-expression and vital power
- Number 2 — Moon (Chandra): Sensitivity, intuition, emotion, receptivity, the lunar principle of reflection, nourishment, and cyclic change
- Number 3 — Jupiter (Guru/Brihaspati): Wisdom, expansion, optimism, generosity, the Jupiterian principle of growth, teaching, and the abundant expression of divine knowledge
- Number 4 — Rahu (North Node): Ambition, unconventionality, hard work, disruption, the Rahuvian principle of karmic intensification, worldly desire, and the breaking of established patterns
- Number 5 — Mercury (Budha): Intelligence, communication, versatility, adaptability, the Mercurian principle of quick thinking, commercial acumen, and the most nimble of all possible engagements with the world
- Number 6 — Venus (Shukra): Beauty, harmony, love, luxury, the Venusian principle of aesthetic refinement, sensory pleasure, and the most refined expression of the creative and relational dimensions of human experience
- Number 7 — Ketu (South Node): Spirituality, mysticism, introspection, liberation, the Ketuvian principle of karmic dissolution, detachment from the material, and the most genuinely otherworldly of all possible orientations to existence
- Number 8 — Saturn (Shani): Discipline, perseverance, karma, authority, the Saturnine principle of earned achievement and the genuine weight of material and structural responsibility
- Number 9 — Mars (Mangal): Energy, courage, ambition, completion, the Martian principle of dynamic action and the most complete expression of the individual will in service of the most genuinely important causes
How to Calculate Your Mulank (Birth Number)
The Mulank or birth number is calculated by reducing the day of birth to a single digit between one and nine. If you were born on a single-digit day (the 1st through the 9th), your Mulank is simply that day. If you were born on a two-digit day (the 10th through the 31st), you add the two digits together, reducing to a single digit if needed. Born on the 15th: 1 + 5 = 6, Mulank is 6. Born on the 28th: 2 + 8 = 10, 1 + 0 = 1, Mulank is 1. The dates for each Mulank are: 1 = born on 1, 10, 19, or 28; 2 = born on 2, 11, 20, or 29; 3 = born on 3, 12, 21, or 30; 4 = born on 4, 13, 22, or 31; 5 = born on 5, 14, or 23; 6 = born on 6, 15, or 24; 7 = born on 7, 16, or 25; 8 = born on 8, 17, or 26; 9 = born on 9, 18, or 27.
How to Calculate Your Bhagyank (Destiny Number)
The Bhagyank or destiny number is calculated by adding all the digits of the complete date of birth — day, month, and year — and reducing the total to a single digit. For example, if your date of birth is 15 August 1969, you add 1 + 5 + 0 + 8 + 1 + 9 + 6 + 9 = 39, then 3 + 9 = 12, then 1 + 2 = 3, giving a Bhagyank of 3 (ruled by Jupiter). Another example: 3 March 1985 = 0 + 3 + 0 + 3 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 5 = 29, 2 + 9 = 11, 1 + 1 = 2, giving a Bhagyank of 2 (ruled by Moon).
The Relationship Between Mulank and Bhagyank
The Mulank and the Bhagyank represent two different but complementary dimensions of the numerological picture of an individual life. The Mulank is the number of the personality — of the instinctive, immediately visible, characteristically expressed qualities that make the individual recognisably themselves in the most spontaneous and most unreflective dimensions of their engagement with the world. The Bhagyank is the number of destiny — of the deeper pattern of purpose, direction, and ultimate trajectory that underlies and gives meaning to the surface expression of the personality, and that often becomes progressively more visible and more important in the individual’s life as they move through the more reflective and the more spiritually mature phases of their development.
When the Mulank and the Bhagyank are the same number, or numbers ruled by friendly planets, the individual’s personality and destiny are in strong alignment — they find it relatively natural and effortless to express their deepest purpose through their most characteristic personal qualities. When ruled by planets that are neutral or unfriendly to each other, there may be a more complex tension between the personality and the destiny that requires more conscious integration and more deliberate development.
Compatibility in Indian Numerology
Numerical compatibility in the Indian system is understood primarily through the lens of the planetary friendships and enmities established in the Vedic astrological tradition. Numbers whose ruling planets are friends to each other tend to be naturally compatible — they share complementary qualities, understand each other’s fundamental orientations to existence, and support each other’s growth and development. Numbers whose ruling planets are enemies to each other may find more friction and more misunderstanding, though the friction of opposing planetary energies can also produce the most genuinely stimulating and the most genuinely transformative of all possible partnerships.
Lucky Days, Colours, and Gemstones
Each number carries associated lucky days, lucky colours, and associated gemstones that resonate with the vibrational frequency of that number’s ruling planet. These associations are drawn from the rich Vedic tradition of planetary gemology (Navaratna science), colour therapy, and the ancient understanding of vibrational correspondences between different dimensions of the manifest world. They represent one of the most practically applicable dimensions of the Indian numerology system — immediately accessible tools for working with one’s numerological profile in the most tangible and the most day-to-day of all possible dimensions of life.
The Spiritual Dimension of Numbers
In the deepest and most genuinely Vedic understanding of the Indian numerology tradition, the nine numbers are not merely practical tools for understanding personality and destiny — they are the nine most fundamental modalities of the divine creative intelligence’s self-expression in the manifest world, and the numerological profile of an individual is understood as the specific combination of divine qualities that the individual soul has chosen to work with, to develop, to express, and ultimately to transcend in this particular incarnation. The study of one’s numbers is therefore, at its deepest level, not merely a study of oneself in the narrow, ego-centred sense but a study of the specific ways in which the divine has chosen to know itself through the particular configuration of qualities, challenges, gifts, and purposes that this particular life most essentially embodies.

How AdiVeda calculates these numbers
Two numbers are published on this site, and both are derived by the same reduction rule — add the digits, and keep adding until a single digit between 1 and 9 remains.
- Mulank (birth number) — the day of the month of birth only, reduced. The month and year are not used. Example: 28 → 2+8 = 10 → 1+0 = 1.
- Bhagyank (destiny number) — every digit of the full date of birth, added and reduced. Example: 15 August 1969 → 1+5+0+8+1+9+6+9 = 39 → 3+9 = 12 → 1+2 = 3.
Master numbers are reduced, never preserved. An 11 becomes 2 and a 22 becomes 4. Some numerological systems hold 11 and 22 back as special; AdiVeda does not, and the tables on this site are built on that basis throughout.
What this site does not calculate. AdiVeda’s published numerology is date-based. It does not derive a number from your name — neither the Pythagorean nor the Chaldean letter systems are used here — and it does not publish compatibility scores, lucky colours or gemstone recommendations. Where you see those elsewhere, they come from a different system than this one.
