The Dakṣiṇāmūrti Stotram, also called the Dakṣiṇāmūrty-aṣṭakam, is a hymn of ten verses traditionally attributed to Ādi Śaṅkarācārya, addressed to Śiva as Dakṣiṇāmūrti — the youthful teacher who sits facing south beneath a banyan tree and instructs aged sages in silence. It is at once a hymn and a compact statement of Advaita Vedānta. Each of the first nine verses takes up one line of thought — the world as a reflection seen in a mirror, creation as a sprout latent in a seed, consciousness shining through the senses like lamplight through a pierced pot, the Self that persists through deep sleep and through every stage of life, the eightfold form of the Lord — and closes with the same salutation to the Guru who is Dakṣiṇāmūrti. The tenth verse states the fruit of studying the hymn. Sureśvara, Śaṅkara's disciple, is traditionally credited with an explanatory work on it, the Mānasollāsa. Five short verses of meditation on Dakṣiṇāmūrti, including the well-known 'chitraṃ vaṭataror mūle', are printed after the hymn in the 1912 Bṛhatstotraratnākara and are given in a separate section; in recitation they are often said before it. Every verse is given with Roman transliteration (IAST), a simple pronunciation guide, and Hindi and English meanings.

This is the complete Dakṣiṇāmūrti Stotram, ten verses, followed by five verses of meditation. The ten verses follow Śaṅkarācārya-viracitāni Stotrāṇi, Part 1 (1910), a public-domain edition, as transcribed and proofread on Sanskrit Wikisource. They have been compared verse by verse with three independent witnesses: the Bṛhatstotraratnākara printed in 1912 (scanned text on Sanskrit Wikisource), the hymn as embedded in Sureśvara's Mānasollāsa (Sanskrit Wikisource), and the electronic text of Giridhar Madras on sanskritdocuments.org, used for comparison only and not reproduced here. The four agree closely. In verse 3 the base and the Mānasollāsa read असत्कल्पार्थगं where the other two read असत्कल्पार्थकं; the base reading is kept. Four slips in the transcription were corrected where the other witnesses agree: य: is read यः (verse 2), आश्रितान is read आश्रितान् (verse 3), the dropped त् of जगत् is restored before तस्मै (verse 4), and ध्यानाञ्च is read ध्यानाच्च (verse 10); a missing virāma in मूर्त्यष्टकम् (verse 9) is supplied. The five verses of meditation follow the 1912 Bṛhatstotraratnākara, where they are printed after the hymn as verses 11–15, checked against the same verses in the sanskritdocuments text, which prints them before the hymn in a different order; obvious scanning errors in the 1912 text (such as चटविटपि for वटविटपि) were corrected from it. The English and Hindi introductions above are original writing by AdiVeda; they give context and summary, not a translation of the Sanskrit and not a traditional commentary.

He sees this universe — which lies within himself, like a city seen in a mirror — as though it had arisen outside, through māyā, just as things seem to in sleep; and at the moment of awakening he realises his own Self, one without a second. To him, embodied as the Guru, to Śrī Dakṣiṇāmūrti, this salutation.

Before creation this world lay undifferentiated, like the sprout within a seed; afterwards it became variegated by the diversity of space, time and reckoning imagined through māyā. He who unfolds it at his own will, like a magician or like a great yogī — to him, embodied as the Guru, to Śrī Dakṣiṇāmūrti, this salutation.

His radiance alone, which is Being itself, shines as it reaches out to objects that are as good as unreal; he awakens those who come to him directly through the Vedic words "That thou art"; and once he is realised there is no returning to the ocean of worldly existence. To him, embodied as the Guru, to Śrī Dakṣiṇāmūrti, this salutation.

His knowing, bright as the light of a great lamp set inside a pot pierced with many holes, streams outward through the doors of the eye and the other senses; as he shines in the form "I know", this whole world shines after him. To him, embodied as the Guru, to Śrī Dakṣiṇāmūrti, this salutation.

Disputants take the body, or the breath, or the senses, or the fickle intellect, or the void, to be the "I"; they are deeply confused, and speak like women, children, the blind and the dull (the stock comparison of the time for those who do not reason). To him who destroys this great delusion, conjured by the play of the power of māyā — to him, embodied as the Guru, to Śrī Dakṣiṇāmūrti, this salutation.

Like the sun or moon swallowed by Rāhu in an eclipse, veiled by māyā, the person who in deep sleep, when the senses were withdrawn, remained as pure Being alone, and who on waking is recognised in the thought "I slept before" — to him, embodied as the Guru, to Śrī Dakṣiṇāmūrti, this salutation.

Through childhood and the other ages of life, through waking and the other states — through all these states that come and go — there is that which continues and always shines within as "I". He reveals this, one's own Self, to those who worship him, by his auspicious gesture (the cin-mudrā). To him, embodied as the Guru, to Śrī Dakṣiṇāmūrti, this salutation.

In dream or in waking, this person, set spinning by māyā, sees the universe in terms of difference — as cause and effect, as owner and owned, as disciple and teacher, and likewise as father and son and the like. To him (who removes this confusion), embodied as the Guru, to Śrī Dakṣiṇāmūrti, this salutation.

Earth, the waters, fire, wind, space, the sun, the moon and the person (the sacrificer) — as these, this world of moving and unmoving things appears as nothing but his eight forms; and for those who reflect, nothing whatever exists apart from him, the supreme, all-pervading Lord. To him, embodied as the Guru, to Śrī Dakṣiṇāmūrti, this salutation.

Because this hymn makes plain that the Self is all, by hearing it, reflecting on its meaning, meditating on it and reciting it, lordship comes of itself, together with the great glory of being the Self of all; and the unobstructed sovereignty that unfolds in eight ways (the eight powers such as aṇimā) is also attained.

He reveals the truth of the supreme Brahman by an exposition made in silence; he is young, surrounded by throngs of aged sage-disciples established in Brahman; he is the foremost of teachers, his hand forming the cin-mudrā, bliss itself, delighting in his own Self, his face serene and glad — Dakṣiṇāmūrti I praise.
