The Nirvāṇa Ṣaṭkam, also called the Ātma Ṣaṭkam, is a short hymn of six verses traditionally attributed to Ādi Śaṅkarācārya. Each verse sets aside, one group at a time, everything a person normally takes to be the self — the mind and its faculties, the senses and the elements, the vital breaths and the bodily sheaths, the passions and the four aims of life, merit and ritual, family and teacher — and each ends with the same affirmation: I am consciousness and bliss, I am Śiva. It is the method of Advaita Vedānta, 'not this, not this' (neti neti), turned into a meditation that can be sung, and it is among the most widely recited of the hymns ascribed to Śaṅkara. The verses are in the bhujaṅgaprayāta metre. They are given here with Roman transliteration (IAST), a simple pronunciation guide, and Hindi and English meanings.

Textual source ·

This is the complete Nirvāṇa Ṣaṭkam, six verses. The Sanskrit follows the Bṛhatstotraratnākara, Part 1 (1953), as transcribed and proofread on Sanskrit Wikisource from the scanned book. It has been compared verse by verse with a second, separately typed text of the hymn on Sanskrit Wikisource and with the electronic text of M. Giridhar on sanskritdocuments.org, which records the main variant readings; the sanskritdocuments text was used for comparison only and is not reproduced here. The printed edition abbreviates the refrain after the first verse; it is given in full. Three slips in the transcription were corrected where both comparison texts agree: पचवायु-ने वा is read पञ्चवायुर्न वा (verse 2), च जन्म is read न जन्म (verse 5), and न चासाङ्गतं is read न चासङ्गतं (verse 6). The hymn circulates in two main versions, which differ in the first line of verse 5 and in the middle lines of verse 6. The printed edition's version is given here, and the widely recited alternative is quoted in the meaning of each of those verses. The English and Hindi introductions above are original writing by AdiVeda; they give context and summary, not a translation of the Sanskrit and not a traditional commentary.

Verse meanings ·

The Hindi and English meaning under each verse is AdiVeda's own editorial translation, made directly from the Sanskrit printed here for this edition. It is meant to help you follow the text — it is not quoted from any published translation and it is not a traditional commentary. Where traditions read a passage differently, the meaning says so briefly.

I am not the mind, the intellect, the ego or the memory; I am not the ears or the tongue, nor the nose or the eyes. I am not space, nor earth, nor fire, nor air. I am of the nature of consciousness and bliss — I am Śiva, I am Śiva.

I am not what is called the life-breath, nor the five vital airs; not the seven constituents of the body, nor the five sheaths. I am not speech, hands and feet, nor the organs of generation and excretion. I am of the nature of consciousness and bliss — I am Śiva, I am Śiva.

na me dveṣarāgau na me lobhamohau
mado naiva me naiva mātsaryabhāvaḥ,
na dharmo na cārtho na kāmo na mokṣa-
ścidānandarūpaḥ śivo'haṃ śivo'ham || 3 ||

Na me dvesharaagau na me lobhamohau mado naiva me naiva maatsaryabhaavah, na dharmo na chaartho na kaamo na moksha- shchidaanandaruupah shivo'ham shivo'ham

In me there is no aversion and no attachment, no greed and no delusion; no pride is mine, and no envy. For me there is no dharma, no wealth, no pleasure and no liberation. I am of the nature of consciousness and bliss — I am Śiva, I am Śiva.

na puṇyaṃ na pāpaṃ na saukhyaṃ na duḥkhaṃ
na mantro na tīrthaṃ na vedā na yajñāḥ,
ahaṃ bhojanaṃ naiva bhojyaṃ na bhoktā
cidānandarūpaḥ śivo'haṃ śivo'ham || 4 ||

Na punyam na paapam na saukhyam na duhkham na mantro na tiirtham na vedaa na yajnaah, aham bhojanam naiva bhojyam na bhoktaa chidaanandaruupah shivo'ham shivo'ham

There is no merit and no sin, no pleasure and no pain; no mantra, no place of pilgrimage, no Vedas and no sacrifices. I am neither the act of eating, nor what is eaten, nor the one who eats. I am of the nature of consciousness and bliss — I am Śiva, I am Śiva.

na mṛtyurna śaṅkā na me jātibhedaḥ
pitā naiva me naiva mātā na janma,
na bandhurna mitraṃ gururnaiva śiṣya-
ścidānandarūpaḥ śivo'haṃ śivo'ham || 5 ||

Na mrityurna shankaa na me jaatibhedah pitaa naiva me naiva maataa na janma, na bandhurna mitram gururnaiva shishya- shchidaanandaruupah shivo'ham shivo'ham

There is no death and no fear of it, no distinction of birth for me; I have no father, no mother, no birth. There is no kinsman and no friend, no teacher and no disciple. I am of the nature of consciousness and bliss — I am Śiva, I am Śiva. (Many recitations read the first line as "na me mṛtyuśaṅkā na me jātibhedaḥ" — "I have no fear of death".)

ahaṃ nirvikalpo nirākārarūpo
vibhutvācca sarvatra sarvendriyāṇām,
na cāsaṅgataṃ naiva muktirna meya-
ścidānandarūpaḥ śivo'haṃ śivo'ham || 6 ||

Aham nirvikalpo niraakaararuupo vibhutvaachcha sarvatra sarvendriyaanaam, na chaasangatam naiva muktirna meya- shchidaanandaruupah shivo'ham shivo'ham

I am free of all mental constructs, formless in nature; because I am all-pervading I am present everywhere, in all the senses (as their ground). For me there is no detachment and no liberation, and I am no object to be measured or known. I am of the nature of consciousness and bliss — I am Śiva, I am Śiva. (The commonly recited text reads the middle lines as "vibhurvyāpya sarvatra sarvendriyāṇām, sadā me samatvaṃ na muktirna bandhaḥ" — "pervading all, I am everywhere; I am ever the same; there is neither liberation nor bondage".)
