The Chāndogya Upaniṣad is the second longest of the principal Upaniṣads and belongs to the Sāmaveda: it forms the last eight chapters of the Chāndogya Brāhmaṇa. It holds some of the best known teachings in the whole of Sanskrit literature — Śāṇḍilya's self within the heart, the doctrine of the five fires and the two paths after death, Uddālaka's instruction of his son Śvetaketu ending nine times in tat tvam asi, Nārada's ascent from name to the infinite, and Prajāpati's long teaching to Indra on the bodiless self. It also holds some of its liveliest narrative: the starving Uṣasti, the dogs who sing for food, Raikva under his cart, and Satyakāma who would not lie about his birth. Because the text runs to 631 passages, Adiveda publishes it as its eight books, one page each, with the Sanskrit, Roman (IAST) transliteration, a simple pronunciation guide, and Hindi and English meanings for every passage.

the Sanskrit follows Sanskrit Wikisource, छान्दोग्योपनिषद्, collated passage by passage against the GRETIL text with the commentary ascribed to Śaṅkara (checked by its editors against the printed edition of Limaye and Vadekar, Poona 1958) and the independently proofread transcription at sanskritdocuments.org. The text is printed without Vedic accents, as the base has none.
