The second book takes the sāman, the sung chant, and lays it over the world. A chant has five or seven parts, and each set of parts is matched with the worlds, with rain and water, with the seasons, with animals, with the breaths, and with the hours of the day, so that singing becomes a way of holding the whole of life in view. The book ends with practical advice on how the chant should sound, with the derivation of bhūḥ, bhuvaḥ and svaḥ and of OM from them, and with a set of offerings by which the patron of a sacrifice secures a world of his own.

Textual source ·

the Sanskrit follows Sanskrit Wikisource, छान्दोग्योपनिषद् (अध्यायः १–८), a public-domain text. It was collated passage by passage against two further electronic texts: the Chāndogya with the commentary ascribed to Śaṅkara in the GRETIL corpus (entered by the Sansknet project and checked by its editors against the printed edition of Limaye and Vadekar, Eighteen Principal Upaniṣads, Poona 1958), and the independently proofread transcription at sanskritdocuments.org. Eighteen readings of the base text were corrected where both of the other witnesses agreed against it, and two passage numbers (2.3.1 and 6.6.5) were renumbered on the same evidence; every correction is a reading found in a witness, none was supplied from memory. Where the base and the witnesses differ without a clear majority, the base reading is kept. The text is printed without Vedic accents, as the base has none; the Sāmavedic sign ꣳ is kept as it stands in the source. The English and Hindi introductions above are original writing by AdiVeda; they give context and summary, not a translation of the Sanskrit and not a traditional commentary.

Khaṇḍa 2.1 — The Whole Sāman as the Good

samastasya khalu sāmna upāsanaṃ sādhu yatkhalu sādhu tatsāmetyācakṣate yadasādhu tadasāmeti || 1 ||

Samastasya khalu saamna upaasanam saadhu yatkhalu saadhu tatsaametyaachakshate yadasaadhu tadasaameti || 1 ||

To venerate the whole sāman is good. Whatever is good, people call sāman; whatever is not good, they call asāman.

tadutāpyāhuḥ sāmnainamupāgāditi sādhunainamupāgādityeva tadāhurasāmnainamupāgādityasādhunainamupāgādityeva tadāhuḥ || 2 ||

Tadutaapyaahuh saamnainamupaagaaditi saadhunainamupaagaadityeva tadaahurasaamnainamupaagaadityasaadhunainamupaagaadityeva tadaahuh || 2 ||

So too people say, 'He approached him with sāman,' meaning that he approached him with goodness; and 'He approached him without sāman,' meaning that he approached him with something not good.

athotāpyāhuḥ sāma no bateti yatsādhu bhavati sādhu batetyeva tadāhurasāma no bateti yadasādhu bhavatyasādhu batetyeva tadāhuḥ || 3 ||

Athotaapyaahuh saama no bateti yatsaadhu bhavati saadhu batetyeva tadaahurasaama no bateti yadasaadhu bhavatyasaadhu batetyeva tadaahuh || 3 ||

And again they say, 'Ah, this is sāman for us!' when something is good, meaning 'Ah, how good!'; and 'Ah, this is no sāman for us!' when something is not good, meaning 'Ah, how bad!'

He who knows this and venerates the sāman as the good — to him good qualities come quickly, and they bow before him.

Now in the reverse order: the sky is the hiṃkāra, the sun the prastāva, the mid-space the udgītha, fire the pratihāra, and the earth the nidhana.

For one who knows this and venerates the fivefold sāman in the worlds, the worlds are favourable, both in the ascending and in the reverse order.

One should venerate the fivefold sāman, higher and higher, in the vital functions: breath is the hiṃkāra, speech the prastāva, the eye the udgītha, hearing the pratihāra, and the mind the nidhana — for these are each higher than the last.

Now one should venerate that sun as the sevenfold sāman. It is always the same (sama), and so it is sāman; it faces every one alike, 'towards me, towards me,' and so it is sāman.

The time when the cattle are gathered is the ādi; on that the birds depend, and that is why they fly in mid-air, holding themselves up without support — for they share in the ādi of this sāman.

The time of high noon is the udgītha; on that the gods depend, and that is why they are the best of Prajāpati's offspring — for they share in the udgītha of this sāman.

Khaṇḍa 2.10 — The Sāman Measured by Oneself

atha khalvātmasaṃmitamatimṛtyu saptavidhaṃ sāmopāsīta hiṅkāra iti tryakṣaraṃ prastāva iti tryakṣaraṃ tatsamam || 1 ||

Atha khalvaatmasammitamatimrityu saptavidham saamopaasiita hinkaara iti tryaksharam prastaava iti tryaksharam tatsamam || 1 ||

Now one should venerate the sevenfold sāman that is measured by oneself and carries one beyond death: hiṃkāra has three syllables and prastāva has three — these are equal.

ādiriti dvyakṣaraṃ pratihāra iti caturakṣaraṃ tata ihaikaṃ tatsamam || 2 ||

Aadiriti dvyaksharam pratihaara iti chaturaksharam tata ihaikam tatsamam || 2 ||

Ādi has two syllables and pratihāra has four; take one syllable from there and add it here, and these too are equal.

udgītha iti tryakṣaramupadrava iti caturakṣaraṃ tribhistribhiḥ samaṃ bhavatyakṣaramatiśiṣyate tryakṣaraṃ tatsamam || 3 ||

Udgiitha iti tryaksharamupadrava iti chaturaksharam tribhistribhih samam bhavatyaksharamatishishyate tryaksharam tatsamam || 3 ||

Udgītha has three syllables and upadrava has four; taken three by three they are equal, and one syllable is left over — counted as three syllables, it too is equal.

nidhanamiti tryakṣaraṃ tatsamameva bhavati tāni ha vā etāni dvāviṃśatirakṣarāṇi || 4 ||

Nidhanamiti tryaksharam tatsamameva bhavati taani ha vaa etaani dvaavimshatiraksharaani || 4 ||

Nidhana has three syllables, and that too is equal. All these together make twenty-two syllables.

ekaviṃśatyādityamāpnotyekaviṃśo vā ito'sāvādityo dvāviṃśena paramādityājjayati tannākaṃ tadviśokam || 5 ||

Ekavimshatyaadityamaapnotyekavimsho vaa ito'saavaadityo dvaavimshena paramaadityaajjayati tannaakam tadvishokam || 5 ||

With twenty-one one reaches the sun, for the sun is the twenty-first from here; with the twenty-second one wins what is beyond the sun — that is the vault of heaven, that is the place free from sorrow.

āpnoti hādityasya jayaṃ paro hāsyādityajayājjayo bhavati ya etadevaṃ vidvānātmasaṃmitamatimṛtyu saptavidhaṃ sāmopāste sāmopāste || 6 ||

Aapnoti haadityasya jayam paro haasyaadityajayaajjayo bhavati ya etadevam vidvaanaatmasammitamatimrityu saptavidham saamopaaste saamopaaste || 6 ||

He who knows this and venerates the sevenfold sāman measured by oneself and carrying one beyond death gains the victory of the sun, and his victory is higher even than the victory of the sun — he who venerates the sāman.

Loma hinkaarastvakprastaavo maamsamudgiitho'sthi pratihaaro majjaa nidhanametadyajnaayajniiyamangeshu protam || 1 ||

Hair is the hiṃkāra, skin the prastāva, flesh the udgītha, bone the pratihāra, and marrow the nidhana — this is the yajñāyajñīya sāman woven upon the limbs of the body.

He who knows this yajñāyajñīya sāman as woven upon the limbs becomes sound of limb and is not maimed in any limb; he lives out his full span, lives long, becomes great in offspring and cattle and great in fame. His observance is this: let him not eat marrow for a year — or, as some say, let him not eat marrow at all.

Khaṇḍa 2.20 — The Rājana Sāman

Agnirhinkaaro vaayuh prastaava aaditya udgiitho nakshatraani pratihaarashchandramaa nidhanametadraajanam devataasu protam || 1 ||

Fire is the hiṃkāra, the wind the prastāva, the sun the udgītha, the lunar mansions the pratihāra, and the moon the nidhana — this is the rājana sāman woven upon the deities.

He who knows this rājana sāman as woven upon the deities attains to the same world, the same station and union with those very deities; he lives out his full span, lives long, becomes great in offspring and cattle and great in fame. His observance is this: let him not speak ill of the brāhmaṇas.

The threefold knowledge is the hiṃkāra; these three worlds are the prastāva; fire, wind and sun are the udgītha; the lunar mansions, the birds and the rays are the pratihāra; serpents, gandharvas and the fathers are the nidhana — this is the sāman woven upon everything.

He who knows this sāman as woven upon everything becomes everything.

Tadesha shloko yaani panchadhaa triinii triini tebhyo na jyaayah paramanyadasti || 3 ||

On this there is this verse: 'Those which are three and three in fivefold groups — there is nothing greater than they, nothing beyond them.'

Yastadveda sa veda sarvamsarvaa disho balimasmai haranti sarvamasmiityupaasita tadvratam tadvratam || 4 ||

He who knows that knows all; all the quarters bring him tribute. Let him venerate with the thought 'I am all this' — that is his observance, that is his observance.

'I choose for the sāman that singing which is deep-sounding and good for cattle' — this is the udgītha of fire. The indistinct one is Prajāpati's, the distinct one Soma's, the soft and smooth one the wind's, the smooth and strong one Indra's, the one like the cry of the curlew Bṛhaspati's, and the one broken in tone Varuṇa's. Let one practise all of these, but avoid the one belonging to Varuṇa.

'Let me sing immortality for the gods, the offering for the fathers, hope for human beings, grass and water for the animals, the heavenly world for the patron, and food for myself.' Holding these in mind, let him sing the praise attentively.

All the vowels are the selves of Indra, all the sibilants the selves of Prajāpati, and all the stops the selves of Death. If someone reproaches him over the vowels, let him say, 'I have taken refuge in Indra; he will answer you.'

If someone reproaches him over the sibilants, let him say, 'I have taken refuge in Prajāpati; he will crush you.' And if someone reproaches him over the stops, let him say, 'I have taken refuge in Death; he will burn you up.'

All the vowels should be spoken resonant and strong, with the thought 'Let me give strength to Indra.' All the sibilants should be spoken unswallowed, uncast away and open, with the thought 'Let me entrust myself to Prajāpati.' All the stops should be spoken slowly and unslurred, with the thought 'Let me keep myself away from Death.'

There are three branches of duty. The first is sacrifice, study and giving; the second is austerity; the third is the student of sacred knowledge who dwells in his teacher's house and gives himself up utterly to it. All of these win worlds of merit; but the one established in brahman attains immortality.

Prajāpati brooded over the worlds; from the worlds thus brooded over the threefold knowledge flowed forth. He brooded over that; from it thus brooded over these syllables flowed forth — bhūḥ, bhuvaḥ, svaḥ.

He brooded over them; from them thus brooded over the syllable OM flowed forth. As all the leaves are held together by the stalk that pierces them, so is all speech held together by OM. OM is all this, OM alone is all this.

Khaṇḍa 2.24 — Winning the Patron's World

Brahmavaadino vadanti yadvasuunaam praatah savanamrudraanaam maadhyandinamsavanamaadityaanaam cha vishveshaam cha devaanaam tritiiyasavanam || 1 ||

Those who speak of brahman say: the morning pressing belongs to the Vasus, the midday pressing to the Rudras, and the third pressing to the Ādityas and the All-gods.

'Where then is the world of the patron of the sacrifice?' How should one who does not know this perform the rite at all? Let him perform it only knowing.

Before the morning litany is begun, he sits down behind the householder's fire facing north and sings the sāman of the Vasus:

Then he makes the offering: 'Homage to fire, dweller in the earth, dweller in the world! Find the world for me, the patron. That is indeed the patron's world; there shall I go.'

'There will the patron go when his life is done — svāhā! Draw back the bolt,' he says, and rises. Then the Vasus hand over the morning pressing to him.

Before the midday pressing is begun, he sits down behind the āgnīdhrīya fire facing north and sings the sāman of the Rudras:

atra yajamānaḥ parastādāyuṣaḥ svāhāpajahi parighamityuktvottiṣṭhati tasmai rudrā mādhyaṃdinaṃsavanaṃsaṃprayacchanti || 10 ||

Atra yajamaanah parastaadaayushah svaahaapajahi parighamityuktvottishthati tasmai rudraa maadhyamdinamsavanamsamprayachchhanti || 10 ||

'There will the patron go when his life is done — svāhā! Draw back the bolt,' he says, and rises. Then the Rudras hand over the midday pressing to him.

purā tṛtīyasavanasyopākaraṇājjaghanenāhavanīyasyodaṅmukha upaviśya sa ādityaṃsa vaiśvadevaṃ sāmābhigāyati || 11 ||

Puraa tritiiyasavanasyopaakaranaajjaghanenaahavaniiyasyodanmukha upavishya sa aadityamsa vaishvadevam saamaabhigaayati || 11 ||

Before the third pressing is begun, he sits down behind the offertorial fire facing north and sings the sāman of the Ādityas and the sāman of the All-gods:

lo3kadvāramapāvā3rṇū33paśyema tvā vayaṃ svārā 33333 hu3m ā33 jyā3 yo3ā 32111 iti || 12 ||

Lo3kadvaaramapaavaa3rnuu33pashyema tvaa vayam svaaraa 33333 hu3m aa33 jyaa3 yo3aa 32111 iti || 12 ||

'लोक का द्वार खोल दो, कि हम तुम्हें स्वाराज्य के लिए देखें' — यह आदित्यों का साम है।

'Open the door of the world, that we may see you — for self-rule.' That is the sāman of the Ādityas.

ādityamatha vaiśvadevaṃ lo3kadvāramapāvā3rṇū33 paśyema tvā vayaṃsāmrā33333 hu3m ā33 jyā3yo3ā 32111 iti || 13 ||

Aadityamatha vaishvadevam lo3kadvaaramapaavaa3rnuu33 pashyema tvaa vayamsaamraa33333 hu3m aa33 jyaa3yo3aa 32111 iti || 13 ||

And then that of the All-gods: 'Open the door of the world, that we may see you — for universal rule.'

atha juhoti nama ādityebhyaśca viśvebhyaśca devebhyo divikṣidbhyo lokakṣidbhyo lokaṃ me yajamānāya vindata || 14 ||

Atha juhoti nama aadityebhyashcha vishvebhyashcha devebhyo divikshidbhyo lokakshidbhyo lokam me yajamaanaaya vindata || 14 ||

Then he makes the offering: 'Homage to the Ādityas and to the All-gods, dwellers in the sky, dwellers in the world! Find the world for me, the patron.'

eṣa vai yajamānasya loka etāsmyatra yajamānaḥ parastādāyuṣaḥ svāhāpahata parighamityuktvottiṣṭhati || 15 ||

Esha vai yajamaanasya loka etaasmyatra yajamaanah parastaadaayushah svaahaapahata parighamityuktvottishthati || 15 ||

'That is indeed the patron's world; there shall I go. There will the patron go when his life is done — svāhā! Draw back the bolt,' he says, and rises.

Then the Ādityas and the All-gods hand over the third pressing to him. He who knows this knows the full measure of the sacrifice — he who knows this.
