Shruti Stuti

Śrīmad Bhāgavata Purāṇa, tenth skandha, adhyāya 87

Continue exploring ·

The Śruti Stuti — the Veda-stuti — answers a question Parīkṣit asks: how can the Vedas, whose whole business is qualities, speak of what has none? Nārāyaṇa Ṛṣi's answer is that the śrutis themselves sing, and the twenty-eight verses that follow (14 to 41) are given as their song. It is the most difficult Sanskrit in the Bhāgavata and among the most admired: long compounds in a heavy lyric metre, the Vedas addressing the Absolute directly. Their argument is that the world is neither real in itself nor simply false — as clay is not created when a pot appears nor destroyed when it breaks — and that the wise therefore place mind, speech and act in him, since a man's footsteps on the earth cannot fall anywhere but on the earth. They praise those who, having heard, gave up argument and simply listened; they say that even breathing is only bellows-work in one who has never uttered the syllables of his name. The chapter is given complete, 50 verses, of which the Vedas' own song is 14 to 41.

Textual source ·

This is the complete Śruti Stuti (the Vedas' hymn of praise), Bhāgavata Purāṇa, Skandha 10, Chapter 87, 50 verses. The Sanskrit follows Sanskrit Wikisource, Śrīmad Bhāgavata Purāṇa (श्रीमद्भागवतपुराणम्), a public-domain text. It has been checked verse by verse against the GRETIL electronic text of the Bhāgavata Purāṇa (entered by Ulrich Stiehl), which is used for comparison only and is not reproduced here. A few obvious typing and scanning errors in the online source were corrected where the comparison text confirmed the right reading; genuine variant readings have been kept as this text has them. The English and Hindi introductions above are original writing by AdiVeda; they give context and summary, not a translation of the Sanskrit and not a traditional commentary.

Verse meanings ·

The Hindi and English meaning under each verse is AdiVeda's own editorial translation, made directly from the Sanskrit printed here for this edition. It is meant to help you follow the text — it is not quoted from any published translation and it is not a traditional commentary. Where traditions read a passage differently, the meaning says so briefly.

śrīparīkṣiduvāca

Shriipariikshiduvaacha
Brahman brahmanyanirdeshye nirgune gunavrittayah |
Katham charanti shrutayah saakshaat sadasatah pare || 1 ||

Parīkṣit said: O sage, the Vedas work by speaking of qualities. How, then, can they bear directly on Brahman, which cannot be pointed out in words, has no qualities, and lies beyond both being and non-being?

śrīśuka uvāca

Shriishuka uvaacha
Buddhiindriyamanahpraanaan janaanaam asrijat prabhuh |
Maatraartham cha bhavaartham cha aatmane'kalpanaaya cha || 2 ||

Śrī Śuka said: The Lord fashioned intellect, senses, mind and the vital breaths for living beings — for experiencing objects, for action and rebirth, for the self's passage to other worlds, and finally for release, where all mental constructs cease.

saiṣā hyupaniṣad brāhmī pūrveṣāṃ pūrvajairdhṛtā |
śraddhayā dhārayed yastāṃ kṣemaṃ gacchedakiñcanaḥ || 3 ||

Saishaa hyupanishad braahmii puurveshaam puurvajairdhritaa |
Shraddhayaa dhaarayed yastaam kshemam gachchhedakinchanah || 3 ||

This is the Upaniṣad of Brahman, carried by the forebears of the ancients. Whoever holds it with faith, owning nothing, reaches the highest good.

atra te varṇayiṣyāmi gāthāṃ nārāyaṇānvitām |

Atra te varnayishyaami gaathaam naaraayanaanvitaam |
Naaradasya cha samvaadam rishernaaraayanasya cha || 4 ||

On this point I will tell you an account connected with Nārāyaṇa: the dialogue between Nārada and the sage Nārāyaṇa.

ekadā nārado lokān paryaṭan bhagavatpriyaḥ |
sanātanamṛṣiṃ draṣṭuṃ yayau nārāyaṇāśramam || 5 ||

Ekadaa naarado lokaan paryatan bhagavatpriyah |
Sanaatanamrishim drashtum yayau naaraayanaashramam || 5 ||

Once Nārada, beloved of the Lord, was roaming the worlds, and went to Nārāyaṇa's hermitage to see that ancient sage.

yo vai bhāratavarṣe'smin kṣemāya svastaye nṛṇām |

Yo vai bhaaratavarshe'smin kshemaaya svastaye nrinaam |
Dharmajnaanashamopetam aakalpaadaasthitastapah || 6 ||

From the start of this cosmic age he has remained in Bhāratavarṣa, practising austerity joined with dharma, knowledge and inner calm, for the welfare and good of humankind.

tatropaviṣṭaṃ ṛṣibhiḥ kalāpagrāmavāsibhiḥ |
parītaṃ praṇato'pṛcchad idameva kurūdvaha || 7 ||

Tatropavishtam rishibhih kalaapagraamavaasibhih |
Pariitam pranato'prichchhad idameva kuruudvaha || 7 ||

He was seated there, surrounded by sages who lived in the village of Kalāpa. Bowing to him, O best of the Kurus, Nārada asked this very question.

tasmai hyavocadbhagavān ṛṣīṇāṃ śṛṇvatāmidam |

Tasmai hyavochadbhagavaan rishiinaam shrinvataamidam |
Yo brahmavaadah puurveshaam janalokanivaasinaam || 8 ||

With the sages listening, the Lord told him of a discussion on Brahman once held among the ancient dwellers of Janaloka.

śrībhagavānuvāca
svāyambhuva brahmasatraṃ janaloke'bhavat purā |

Shriibhagavaanuvaacha
Svaayambhuva brahmasatram janaloke'bhavat puraa |
Tatrasthaanaam maanasaanaam muniinaam uurdhvaretasaam || 9 ||

The Lord said: O son of the Self-born, long ago in Janaloka there was a sacred session of inquiry into Brahman among the sages living there — born from Brahmā's mind and lifelong celibates.

śvetadvīpaṃ gatavati tvayi draṣṭuṃ tadīśvaram |
brahmavādaḥ susaṃvṛttaḥ śrutayo yatra śerate |
tatra hāyamabhūtpraśnastvaṃ māṃ yamanupṛcchasi || 10 ||

Shvetadviipam gatavati tvayi drashtum tadiishvaram |
Brahmavaadah susamvrittah shrutayo yatra sherate |
Tatra haayamabhuutprashnastvam maam yamanuprichchhasi || 10 ||

You had gone to Śvetadvīpa to see its Lord. A thorough discussion took place about that in which the śrutis come to rest, and there arose the very question you now put to me.

tulyaśrutatapaḥśīlāḥ tulyasvīyārimadhyamāḥ |
api cakruḥ pravacanaṃ ekaṃ śuśrūṣavo'pare || 11 ||

Tulyashrutatapahshiilaah tulyasviiyaarimadhyamaah |
Api chakruh pravachanam ekam shushruushavo'pare || 11 ||

They were equal in learning, austerity and character, and looked alike on kin, foe and stranger. Still, they made one of them the speaker, and the rest sat eager to hear.

śrīsanandana uvāca

Shriisanandana uvaacha
Svasrishtamidamaapiiya shayaanam saha shaktibhih |
Tadante bodhayaam chakruh tallingaih shrutayah param || 12 ||

Śrī Sanandana said: Having drawn this self-made universe back into himself, the Supreme lay asleep with all his powers. At the close of that dissolution the śrutis woke him by describing the marks of his nature.

yathā śayānaṃ samrājaṃ vandinastatparākramaiḥ |

Yathaa shayaanam samraajam vandinastatparaakramaih |
Pratyuushe'bhyetya sushlokaih bodhayantyanujiivinah || 13 ||

It was as when court bards come at dawn to a sleeping emperor and wake him with fine verses about his heroic deeds.

The śrutis said: Victory, victory to you, O Unconquered! Cast down the unborn māyā, who has seized the guṇas to bring faults upon beings — for you by your own nature hold every excellence within you. O awakener of all the powers of beings moving and unmoving, the Veda follows you at times as you act together with māyā, and at times as the pure Self.

The wise know this perceived world to be Brahman, since Brahman is what remains; for arising and passing away belong to changing forms, and happen within the unchanging, as pots within clay. So the seers placed their thought, speech and action in you. Where can the steps people take on the earth fall, if not on the earth?

And so, O Lord of the three worlds, the wise plunged into the nectar-ocean of your story, which washes away the stain of every world, and shed all their torments. How much more, O Supreme, those who by the light of their own nature have shaken off the mind's impressions and the sway of time, and who worship your state — the unbroken experience of bliss.

Those who bear life breathe like a smith's bellows unless they follow you. By your grace the principles beginning with mahat and ahaṃkāra produced the cosmic egg. Among the sheaths starting with the food-sheath, the last one running through them in the shape of a person is you; you are beyond being and non-being, the reality that remains when these are set aside.

Among those who walk the seers' paths, the coarse of vision worship [Brahman] in the belly; the followers of Āruṇi worship in the heart, the subtle inner space from which the channels spread outward. From there, O Infinite, a way rises to the head — your highest abode — and those who reach it never again fall here into the jaws of death.

Entering, as if their cause, the countless species you yourself made, you shine more here and less there, like fire taking the shape of its fuel. So people of stainless mind, who have given up all bargaining for reward, come to know your abode amid these unreal forms — real, even everywhere, of one unvarying essence.

The person dwelling in these bodies, built by his own doing, is not truly enclosed by any covering outer or inner; the wise call him a portion of you, who hold every power. Discerning the human condition in this way, the learned, full of trust, worship on earth your feet, the ground into which all Vedic rites are sown, which put an end to becoming. (Vedānta schools differ on whether the self is a real part of the Lord or only appears limited.)

O Lord, you took a body to make known the hard-to-grasp truth of the Self. Some, whose weariness has melted away as they plunge again and again into the great nectar-ocean of your deeds, and who have left home for the company of the swans that gather at your lotus feet, do not long even for liberation.

When this nest of a body follows your path, it serves one like a self, a friend, a loved one; and you stand turned toward us as our well-wisher, our beloved, our very Self. Yet, alas, people who wound themselves by worshipping the unreal take no delight in you, and driven by their lingering desires they wander through a world of great fear, taking on miserable bodies.

What sages worship in the heart, with breath, mind and senses stilled in firm yoga, even your enemies attained by constantly thinking of you. The women whose minds clung to your arms, long and strong like the body of the serpent-king — and we too, the śrutis, alike with them and seeing you alike — taste the nectar of your lotus feet.

Who here can truly know the One who went before all, when each knower is born late and soon perishes? From him arose the first seer, and after him both hosts of gods. When you lie down, having withdrawn everything, there is neither being nor non-being nor both, nor the rush of time — nothing at all, not even scripture.

Some teach that the non-existent comes to birth, that the existent is destroyed, that the self is many and divided, or that the traffic of actions and rewards is ultimately real; they teach from notions superimposed on the truth. The division 'the person is made of the three guṇas' is born of ignorance. It cannot stand in you, who are beyond it and whose very substance is awareness. (Commentators often take these lines as alluding to rival philosophical schools.)

The mind of three strands, and everything down to human beings, shines in you as if real, though it is not real in itself. Knowers of the Self regard this whole world as real, because it is the Self. People who value gold do not throw away its ornaments, for they are gold; so this world, made by you and entered by you, is understood to be the Self.

Those who serve you as the dwelling of all beings set their foot on the head of death, giving it no thought. But others, however learned, you tether with the words of the Veda as cattle are tied with rope. Only those who have made friends with you purify others; those who have turned away do not.

You have no organs, yet you are self-ruling and hold the power of every organ and instrument. The unblinking gods, together with māyā, carry tribute to you and share in what is offered. Like regional kings under the ruler of all the earth, the makers of the universe carry out their work wherever they are posted, in awe of you.

O ever-free, if the kinds of beings, moving and still, become bound to causes that arise from māyā, it is only the play of your glance, O Supreme. For the Supreme there is no one near and no one far, just as for the sky; you have no fixed place and are untouched, like empty space.

O Eternal, if embodied selves were countless, everlasting and all-pervading, they could not be ruled, and there would be no order; it is only otherwise that rule holds. That from which a thing is made controls it without ever leaving it. Yet for those who claim to know it fully, it remains unknown, because turning it into an object of thought is itself the flaw. (Advaita and the devotional schools read what this verse says about individual selves differently.)

Prakṛti and puruṣa are both unborn; there can be no coming-into-being for them. Living beings arise from the union of the two, like bubbles on water. And these beings, with all their names and qualities, dissolve into you, the Supreme, as rivers into the ocean, or as the juices of countless flowers into honey.

Seeing clearly the confusion your māyā works among people, the wise give ever-deepening love to you, who free from becoming. How could fear of the world pursue those who shelter in you? Your frown, the three-rimmed wheel of time, keeps creating fear only for those who have not taken refuge in you.

Those who, having mastered senses and breath, still try to rein in the wild, restless horse of the mind while neglecting the feet of a guru, grow weary of their methods and meet a hundred troubles — O Unborn, like merchants at sea who have taken no helmsman.

When you are present as the Self, the essence of every joy, what do people who turn to you need with kin, children, body, spouse, wealth, house, land, life-breath or chariots? Those who do not know this truth and move about in pursuit of pleasure through coupling — what in this world can make them happy, when it perishes of itself and is empty of worth by its own nature?

On earth, sages free of pride who carry your lotus feet in their hearts, and the water from whose feet removes sin, are themselves homes of the holiest tīrthas. Whoever has once set the mind on you, the Self of lasting joy, no longer clings to houses that drain a person of his true worth.

If it is said that this world is real because it springs from the real, reason overturns that: in some cases the rule fails, in others the product proves false, and the world is not a mixture of both either. The distinction was assumed for everyday dealings and handed down by the blind leading the blind. Your Vedic speech, with its many figurative senses, bewilders those dulled by ritual chants. (Vedānta schools read this verse's verdict on the world's reality in different ways.)

This world did not exist at the start and will not exist after the end; so what is measured out in between appears only falsely in you, whose essence is one. That is why it is likened to the many forms a substance takes, like gold or clay. Only the unwise take this idle play of a deluded mind to be real.

When the individual self, through ignorance, lies with the unborn māyā and enjoys the guṇas, it takes on their likeness and then follows death, stripped of its glory. You, however, cast her off as a snake sheds its skin; possessing every glory, boundless in splendour, you are exalted in your own greatness with its eightfold powers.

If renunciants do not tear out the matted tangle of desire from the heart, you remain out of reach for the impure even while seated in their hearts, like a jewel worn at the throat and forgotten. O Lord, yogis who pamper their senses find sorrow on both sides: from you as death, who never leaves them, and from you as the goal they have never reached.

One who has come to know you pays no heed to the good and bad results that arise from you, nor to the words of embodied teachers laying down what is virtue and what is fault. O Lord with qualities, carried into people's ears age after age and day after day through the tradition of songs about you, you yourself become their way to liberation.

Even the lords of heaven never reached your end, for you are endless; nor do you reach it yourself, since within you whole clusters of cosmic eggs, each with its coverings, drift along with time like specks of dust in the sky. The śrutis bear their fruit in you by setting aside all that is not you, for you are where they finally come to rest.

śrībhagavānuvāca
ityetadbrahmaṇaḥ putrā āśrutyātmānuśāsanam |
sanandanamathānarcuḥ siddhā jñātvā''tmano gatim || 42 ||

Shriibhagavaanuvaacha
Ityetadbrahmanah putraa aashrutyaatmaanushaasanam |
Sanandanamathaanarchuh siddhaa jnaatvaa''tmano gatim || 42 ||

The Lord said: Having heard this teaching about the Self, Brahmā's sons understood the Self's true goal, and, fulfilled, they honoured Sanandana with worship.

ityaśeṣasamāmnāya purāṇopaniṣadrasaḥ |
samuddhṛtaḥ pūrvajātaiḥ vyomayānairmahātmabhiḥ || 43 ||

Ityasheshasamaamnaaya puraanopanishadrasah |
Samuddhritah puurvajaataih vyomayaanairmahaatmabhih || 43 ||

Thus the great-souled first-born sages, who travel through the sky, drew out this essence of all the Vedas, Purāṇas and Upaniṣads.

tvaṃ caitadbrahmadāyāda śraddhayā''tmānuśāsanam |
dhārayaṃścara gāṃ kāmaṃ kāmānāṃ bharjanaṃ nṛṇām || 44 ||

Tvam chaitadbrahmadaayaada shraddhayaa''tmaanushaasanam |
Dhaarayamshchara gaam kaamam kaamaanaam bharjanam nrinaam || 44 ||

You too, O heir of Brahmā, hold this teaching about the Self with faith and roam the earth as you please; it scorches away people's desires.

śrīśuka uvāca

Shriishuka uvaacha
Evam sa rishinaa''dishtam grihiitvaa shraddhayaatmavaan |
Puurnah shrutadharo raajan aaha viiravrato munih || 45 ||

Śrī Śuka said: O king, the self-possessed sage Nārada, firm in his heroic vows, received with faith what the ṛṣi had taught; fulfilled, and holding in memory all he had heard, he spoke:

śrīnārada uvāca
namastasmai bhagavate kṛṣṇāyāmalakīrtaye |

Shriinaarada uvaacha
Namastasmai bhagavate krishnaayaamalakiirtaye |
Yo dhatte sarvabhuutaanaam abhavaayoshatiih kalaah || 46 ||

Śrī Nārada said: Homage to Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa, whose fame is spotless, who takes on his lovely forms so that all beings may be freed from becoming.

Ityaadyamrishimaanamya tachchhishyaamshcha mahaatmanah |
Tato'gaad aashramam saakshaat piturdvaipaayanasya me || 47 ||

Having bowed in this way to the primal sage and to his great-souled disciples, Nārada went straight to the hermitage of my father, Dvaipāyana.

tasmai tad varṇayāmāsa nārāyaṇamukhācchrutam || 48 ||

Sabhaajito bhagavataa kritaasanaparigrahah |
Tasmai tad varnayaamaasa naaraayanamukhaachchhrutam || 48 ||

Honoured by the revered Vyāsa and seated, he recounted to him what he had heard from Nārāyaṇa's own lips.

ityetad varṇitaṃ rājan yannaḥ praśnaḥ kṛtastvayā |
yathā brahmaṇyanirdeśye nirguṇe'pi manaścaret || 49 ||

Ityetad varnitam raajan yannah prashnah kritastvayaa |
Yathaa brahmanyanirdeshye nirgune'pi manashcharet || 49 ||

So, O king, I have answered the question you put to me: how the mind can move even in Brahman, which cannot be described and has no qualities.

He witnesses this world's beginning, middle and end; he is lord of the unmanifest and of individual souls; having made this world he entered it together with the soul, formed the bodies and governs them. Reaching him, the soul that lay entangled lets go of māyā, as a sleeper lets go of awareness of the body. On that fearless Hari, whose absolute oneness leaves no room for birth, one should meditate without pause.
