The Veṇu Gīta is what the gopīs say to one another about the sound of Kṛṣṇa's flute. Autumn has come to Vṛndāvana, the water has cleared, the forest is in flower, and Kṛṣṇa enters it with the cows and the cowherd boys and begins to play; and the women of Vraja, who cannot go to him, describe to each other what they hear and see. It is a hymn made of observations. The eyes that see his face have got the whole fruit of having eyes. The cows stand with their ears raised and their mouthfuls of grass unswallowed; the calves hold the milk in their mouths and do not drink; the birds have climbed into the branches and sit with their eyes half closed, no longer singing — these are sages, surely, in the form of birds. The rivers slow and eddy and reach out with their waves to hold his feet; the clouds spread themselves above him as an umbrella; even the deer, they say, are more fortunate than we are. 20 verses, the chapter complete.

This is the complete Veṇu Gīta, Bhāgavata Purāṇa, Skandha 10, Chapter 21, 20 verses. The Sanskrit follows Sanskrit Wikisource, Śrīmad Bhāgavata Purāṇa (श्रीमद्भागवतपुराणम्), a public-domain text. It has been checked verse by verse against the GRETIL electronic text of the Bhāgavata Purāṇa (entered by Ulrich Stiehl), which is used for comparison only and is not reproduced here. A few obvious typing and scanning errors in the online source were corrected where the comparison text confirmed the right reading; genuine variant readings have been kept as this text has them. At 10.21.11, where the comparison text reads मूढगतयोऽपि, this text keeps मूढमतयोऽपि.
Śuka said: So it was autumn, the waters had turned clear, and a breeze fragrant with lotus ponds was blowing through the woods when Acyuta, with the cows and the cowherds, entered the forest.

Into woods where rows of trees stood in blossom, where maddened bees and flocks of birds filled the lakes, rivers and hills with sound, the lord of Madhu went, grazing the cows with the herd-boys and Balarāma, and he began to play his flute.

With a peacock-feather crest, the body of a consummate dancer, karṇikāra blossoms at his ears, a garment yellow as gold and the Vaijayantī garland, filling the holes of his flute with the nectar of his lips while bands of cowherds sang his fame, he entered Vṛndāvana, made lovely by his footprints.

The gopīs said: Friends, we know of no greater reward for having eyes than this — to drink in the faces of the two sons of Vraja's chief as they drive the cattle into the woods with their friends, faces pressed to the flute, sending out loving sidelong glances. Those who have drunk that have had the fruit of sight.

Their clothes wreathed with mango shoots, peacock feathers, clusters of flowers, blue water-lilies and lotus garlands, the two in their bright array shone out among the gathering of herdsmen, singing now and then, like two fine dancers on a stage.

Gopīs, what good deed did this flute ever do, that it enjoys by itself the nectar of Dāmodara's lips, which belongs to us gopīs, leaving only a trace of the taste? The rivers thrill in every ripple and the trees shed tears, like noble elders rejoicing in one of their line.

Friend, Vṛndāvana spreads the fame of the whole earth, for it has gained its beauty from the lotus feet of Devakī's son. When the peacocks dance wildly to Govinda's flute, every other creature on the hill-slopes stops still to watch.

Seeing Kṛṣṇa, whose beauty and bearing are a festival for women, and hearing the clear song pouring from his flute, the goddesses riding in their sky-chariots lost their composure to love; flowers slipped from their braids, their sashes came loose, and they swooned.

The cows drink the nectar of the flute-song flowing from Kṛṣṇa's mouth, their ears lifted like cups; and the calves stand motionless, mouths full of milk from the streaming udders, taking Govinda into their hearts through their eyes and touching him with their tears.

Oh, mother, the birds in this forest must be sages. They have climbed onto branches bright with new shoots and, with eyes closed and every other sound given up, they listen to the sweet flute-song Kṛṣṇa is playing as they gaze at him.

The Pulinda women of the forest are fulfilled. When they see the lovely kuṅkuma from the lotus feet of the widely sung one — powder that once adorned his beloveds' breasts — reddening the grass, they are stung by love, and smearing it on their faces and breasts they are freed of their ache.

Friends, as the two lead the cows from wood to wood with the cowherds, carrying the ropes and nooses that mark them as herdsmen, the sweet, generous notes of their flutes work a wonder among living things: whatever moves stands still, and the trees break out in thrills.
