Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

Patañjali — the foundational text of the Yoga darśana

Continue exploring ·

The Yoga Sūtra of Patañjali is the foundational text of the Yoga darśana — 195 sūtras so compressed that almost every one has been argued over for fifteen centuries. It defines its subject in its second line and never loosens the definition: yoga is the stilling of the turnings of the mind; then the seer rests in its own form; otherwise it takes the form of those turnings. The first pāda sets out what the mind does and how it is quieted. The second gives the practice — the five afflictions, the causes of suffering, and the eight limbs from restraint and observance through posture, breath, withdrawal, concentration and meditation to absorption. The third describes the powers that come with mastery, and warns that they are obstacles to it. The fourth turns to the question of what is left: the guṇas resolve, and the power of consciousness rests in itself. What the text is famously silent about is as telling as what it says — three sūtras on posture, and the rest on the mind.

Textual source ·

This is the complete Yoga Sūtra of Patañjali — four chapters (pādas) of 51, 55, 55 and 34 sūtras; the commentaries are not included. The Sanskrit follows Sanskrit Wikisource, योगसूत्रम्, a public-domain text. It has been checked sūtra by sūtra against two printed editions as entered in GRETIL and used for comparison only: the Ānandāśrama edition with the Vyāsa-bhāṣya (Pune, 1904) and the Kashi Sanskrit Series edition with the Yogapradīpikā (1931). Neither is reproduced here. Every sūtra agrees with at least one of those editions; only stray punctuation from the online transcription was removed. The English and Hindi introductions above are original writing by AdiVeda; they give context and summary, not a translation of the Sanskrit and not a traditional commentary.

Verse meanings ·

The Hindi and English meaning under each verse is AdiVeda's own editorial translation, made directly from the Sanskrit printed here for this edition. It is meant to help you follow the text — it is not quoted from any published translation and it is not a traditional commentary. Where traditions read a passage differently, the meaning says so briefly.

Illness, mental dullness, doubt, carelessness, sloth, failure to turn from sense-craving, false seeing, not reaching a stage, and not holding a stage once reached — these scatterings of the mind are the obstacles.

His mastery then extends from the smallest particle to the greatest magnitude.

kṣīṇavṛtter abhijātasyeva maṇer grahītṛgrahaṇagrāhyeṣu tatsthatadañjanatāsamāpattiḥ ||

Kshiinavritter abhijaatasyeva maner grahiitrigrahanagraahyeshu tatsthatadanjanataasamaapattih ||

When the turnings have dwindled, the mind, like a flawless crystal, rests upon and takes the colour of whatever it is placed on — the knower, the act of knowing, or the known; this is samāpatti [coalescence].

tatra śabdārthajñānavikalpaiḥ saṃkīrṇā savitarkā samāpattiḥ ||

Tatra shabdaarthajnaanavikalpaih samkiirnaa savitarkaa samaapattih ||

Smritiparishuddhau svaruupashuunyevaarthamaatranirbhaasaa nirvitarkaa ||

When memory is purified, and the mind, as if empty of its own form, shines forth as the object alone, it is nirvitarkā.

etayaiva savicārā nirvicārā ca sūkṣmaviṣayā vyākhyātā ||

Etayaiva savichaaraa nirvichaaraa cha suukshmavishayaa vyaakhyaataa ||

By this same account, savicārā and nirvicārā, which have subtle objects, are also explained.

sūkṣmaviṣayatvaṃ cāliṅgaparyavasānam ||

Suukshmavishayatvam chaalingaparyavasaanam ||

The range of subtle objects ends in the unmanifest (aliṅga) [root nature].

tā eva sabījaḥ samādhiḥ ||

Taa eva sabiijah samaadhih ||

ṛtaṃbharā tatra prajñā ||

Ritambharaa tatra prajnaa ||

There, insight is truth-bearing (ṛtaṃbharā).

śrutānumānaprajñābhyāṃ anyaviṣayā viśeṣārthatvāt ||

Shrutaanumaanaprajnaabhyaam anyavishayaa visheshaarthatvaat ||

Its object differs from that of knowledge by testimony or inference, because it grasps the particular.

tajjaḥ saṃskāro'nyasaṃskārapratibandhī ||

Tajjah samskaaro'nyasamskaarapratibandhii ||

The impression born of it blocks other impressions.

tasyāpi nirodhe sarvanirodhānnirbījaḥ samādhiḥ ||

Tasyaapi nirodhe sarvanirodhaannirbiijah samaadhih ||

When even that is stilled, everything being stilled, there is seedless (nirbīja) samādhi.

Sādhana Pāda — On Practice (55 sūtras)

tapaḥsvādhyāyeśvarapraṇidhānāni kriyāyogaḥ ||

Discipline (tapas), self-study (svādhyāya) and devotion to Īśvara together form the yoga of action (kriyāyoga).

samādhibhāvanārthaḥ kleśatanūkaraṇārthaśca ||

Samaadhibhaavanaarthah kleshatanuukaranaarthashcha ||

avidyāsmitārāgadveṣābhiniveśāḥ kleśāḥ ||

Ignorance is seeing the impermanent, impure, painful and not-self as permanent, pure, pleasant and the self.

dṛgdarśanaśaktyorekātmatevāsmitā ||

Drigdarshanashaktyorekaatmatevaasmitaa ||

te pratiprasavaheyāḥ sūkṣmāḥ ||

Te pratiprasavaheyaah suukshmaah ||

In their subtle form, these are to be removed by dissolving them back into their source (pratiprasava).

dhyānaheyāstadvṛttayaḥ ||

Dhyaanaheyaastadvrittayah ||

Their active turnings are to be removed through meditation.

Kleshamuulah karmaashayo drishtaadrishtajanmavedaniiyah ||

The store of karma is rooted in the afflictions and is to be experienced in the present birth or in births not yet seen.

sati mūle tadvipāko jātyāyurbhogāḥ ||

Sati muule tadvipaako jaatyaayurbhogaah ||

While the root remains, it ripens as birth, span of life and experience.

te hlādaparitāpaphalāḥ puṇyāpuṇyahetutvāt ||

Te hlaadaparitaapaphalaah punyaapunyahetutvaat ||

These bear fruit as delight or anguish, according as their cause is merit or demerit.

pariṇāmatāpasaṃskāraduḥkhairguṇavṛttivirodhācca duḥkhameva sarvaṃ vivekinaḥ ||

Parinaamataapasamskaaraduhkhairgunavrittivirodhaachcha duhkhameva sarvam vivekinah ||

To the discerning, all is suffering: because of the pain of change, of anxiety and of lingering impressions, and because the functions of the guṇas conflict with one another.

heyaṃ duḥkhaṃ anāgataṃ ||

Heyam duhkham anaagatam ||

The suffering yet to come is what can be avoided.

draṣṭṛdṛśyayoḥ saṃyogo heyahetuḥ ||

Drashtridrishyayoh samyogo heyahetuh ||

The conjunction of the seer and the seen is the cause of what is to be avoided.

prakāśakriyāsthitiśīlaṃ bhūtendriyātmakaṃ bhogāpavargārthaṃdṛśyaṃ ||

Prakaashakriyaasthitishiilam bhuutendriyaatmakam bhogaapavargaarthamdrishyam ||

The seen has the nature of light, activity and inertia; it consists of the elements and the senses; and it exists for the sake of experience and liberation.

viśeṣāviśeṣaliṅgamātrāliṅgāni guṇaparvāṇi ||

Visheshaavisheshalingamaatraalingaani gunaparvaani ||

The stages of the guṇas are the specific, the non-specific, the merely indicated (liṅgamātra) and the unmanifest (aliṅga).

draṣṭā dṛśimātraḥ śuddho'pi pratyayānupaśyaḥ ||

Drashtaa drishimaatrah shuddho'pi pratyayaanupashyah ||

The seer is seeing alone; though pure, it looks on through the contents of the mind.

tadartha eva dṛśyasyātmā ||

Tadartha eva drishyasyaatmaa ||

Kritaartham prati nashtam apyanashtam tad anyasaadhaaranatvaat ||

Though it has vanished for one whose purpose is fulfilled, it has not vanished, since it is shared with others.

svasvāmiśaktyoḥ svarūpopalabdhihetuḥ saṃyogaḥ ||

Svasvaamishaktyoh svaruupopalabdhihetuh samyogah ||

Conjunction is what brings about the recognition of the true natures of the two powers, the owned and the owner.

tasya heturavidyā ||

Tasya heturavidyaa ||

The cause of that [conjunction] is ignorance.

tadabhāvātsaṃyogābhāvo hānaṃ taddṛśeḥ kaivalyaṃ ||

Tadabhaavaatsamyogaabhaavo haanam taddrisheh kaivalyam ||

With its absence, conjunction ceases; this is the removal (hāna), the aloneness (kaivalya) of the seer.

vivekakhyātiraviplavā hānopāyaḥ ||

Vivekakhyaatiraviplavaa haanopaayah ||

Unwavering discriminative discernment is the means of that removal.

tasya saptadhā prāntabhūmiḥ prajñā ||

Tasya saptadhaa praantabhuumih prajnaa ||

Through practice of the limbs of yoga, as impurity wears away, the light of knowledge shines up to discriminative discernment.

jātideśakālasamayānavacchinnāḥ sārvabhaumā mahāvrataṃ ||

Jaatideshakaalasamayaanavachchhinnaah saarvabhaumaa mahaavratam ||

When not limited by birth, place, time or circumstance, and practised in every situation, they are the great vow.

vitarkabādhane pratipakṣabhāvanaṃ ||

Vitarkabaadhane pratipakshabhaavanam ||

When harmful thoughts intrude, one should cultivate their opposite.

Vitarkaa himsaadayah kritakaaritaanumoditaa lobhakrodhamohapuurvakaamridumadhyaadhimaatraa duhkhaajnaanaanantaphalaa itipratipakshabhaavanam ||

Harmful thoughts such as violence — whether done, caused to be done or approved; arising from greed, anger or delusion; mild, moderate or intense — yield endless fruit of suffering and ignorance: reflecting thus is cultivating the opposite.

ahiṃsāpratiṣṭhāyāṃ tatsaṃnidhau vairatyāgaḥ ||

Ahimsaapratishthaayaam tatsamnidhau vairatyaagah ||

Tato dvandvaanabhighaatah ||

trayaṃ ekatra saṃyamaḥ ||

Trayam ekatra samyamah ||

vyutthānanirodhasaṃskārayorabhibhavaprādurbhāvaunirodhakṣaṇacittānvayo nirodhapariṇāmaḥ ||

Vyutthaananirodhasamskaarayorabhibhavapraadurbhaavaunirodhakshanachittaanvayo nirodhaparinaamah ||

The transformation toward stillness is when outgoing impressions are subdued and stilling impressions appear, the mind being joined to the moment of stillness.

tasya praśāntavāhitā saṃskārāt ||

Tasya prashaantavaahitaa samskaaraat ||

The transformation toward samādhi is the waning of scattered attention and the rising of one-pointedness.

tataḥ punaḥ śāntoditau tulyapratyayaucittasyaikāgratāpariṇāmaḥ ||

Tatah punah shaantoditau tulyapratyayauchittasyaikaagrataaparinaamah ||

Then, when the subsiding and the arising cognitions are alike, this is the mind's transformation into one-pointedness.

etena bhūtendriyeṣu dharmalakṣaṇāvasthāpariṇāmā vyākhyātāḥ ||

Etena bhuutendriyeshu dharmalakshanaavasthaaparinaamaa vyaakhyaataah ||

By this, the transformations of property, temporal character and condition in the elements and senses are also explained.

śāntoditāvyapadeśyadharmānupātī dharmī ||

Shaantoditaavyapadeshyadharmaanupaatii dharmii ||

The substrate is what persists through its properties — those that have subsided, those that have arisen, and those not yet definable.

kramānyatvaṃ pariṇāmānyatve hetuḥ ||

Kramaanyatvam parinaamaanyatve hetuh ||

śabdārthapratyayānāṃ itaretarādhyāsātsaṃkaraḥ tatpravibhāgasaṃyamātsarvabhūtarutajñānaṃ ||

Shabdaarthapratyayaanaam itaretaraadhyaasaatsamkarah tatpravibhaagasamyamaatsarvabhuutarutajnaanam ||

Word, object and idea are confused through being superimposed on one another; through saṃyama on their distinction comes understanding of the sounds of all beings.

saṃskārasākṣātkaraṇātpūrvajātijñānaṃ ||

Samskaarasaakshaatkaranaatpuurvajaatijnaanam ||

[Through saṃyama] on a cognition comes knowledge of another's mind.

na ca tatsālambanaṃ tasyāviṣayībhūtatvāt ||

Na cha tatsaalambanam tasyaavishayiibhuutatvaat ||

But not of its supporting object, since that was not the object [of saṃyama].

kāyarūpasaṃyamāttadgrāhyaśaktistambhecakṣuḥprakāśāsaṃprayoge'ntardhānaṃ ||

Kaayaruupasamyamaattadgraahyashaktistambhechakshuhprakaashaasamprayoge'ntardhaanam ||

Through saṃyama on the form of the body, its capacity to be perceived is suspended; with no contact between the eye and light, there is invisibility.

sopakramaṃ nirupakramaṃ ca karma tatsaṃyamādaparāntajñānam ariṣṭebhyo vā ||

Sopakramam nirupakramam cha karma tatsamyamaadaparaantajnaanam arishtebhyo vaa ||

Karma is either fast-ripening or slow; through saṃyama on it, or from portents, comes knowledge of one's death.

maitryādiṣu balāni ||

Maitryaadishu balaani ||

[Through saṃyama] on friendliness and the like come those strengths.

baleṣu hastibalādīni ||

Baleshu hastibalaadiini ||

Experience is the failure to tell apart the mind (sattva) and puruṣa, though they are utterly distinct; since the mind exists for another, saṃyama on what exists for its own sake yields knowledge of puruṣa.

Jaatilakshanadeshairanyataanavachchhedaattulyayostatah pratipattih ||

By it, two things that are alike — whose difference cannot be marked out by class, characteristic or position — are clearly distinguished.

tārakaṃ sarvaviṣayaṃ sarvathāviṣayaṃ akramaṃ ceti vivekajaṃjñānaṃ ||

Taarakam sarvavishayam sarvathaavishayam akramam cheti vivekajamjnaanam ||

Knowledge born of discernment is 'the deliverer' (tāraka): it has all things for its object, knows them in every mode, and is without sequence [grasping all at once].

sattvapuruṣayoḥ śuddhisāmye kaivalyaṃ iti ||

Sattvapurushayoh shuddhisaamye kaivalyam iti ||

nimittaṃ aprayojakaṃ prakṛtīnāṃ varaṇabhedastu tataḥ kṣetrikavat ||

Nimittam aprayojakam prakritiinaam varanabhedastu tatah kshetrikavat ||

The incidental cause does not set the natural forces in motion; it only breaks the barrier, like a farmer [who opens a channel so water flows on its own].

nirmāṇacittānyasmitāmātrāt ||

Nirmaanachittaanyasmitaamaatraat ||

Though their activities differ, one mind directs the many [constructed minds].

tatra dhyānajaṃ anāśayaṃ ||

Tatra dhyaanajam anaashayam ||

Of these, the mind born of meditation is free of stored residue (anāśaya).

karmāśuklākṛṣṇaṃ yoginas trividhaṃ itareṣāṃ ||

Karmaashuklaakrishnam yoginas trividham itareshaam ||

The karma of a yogī is neither white nor black; for others it is of three kinds [white, black and mixed].

tatastadvipākānuguṇānāṃ evābhivyaktirvāsanānāṃ ||

Tatastadvipaakaanugunaanaam evaabhivyaktirvaasanaanaam ||

From that [threefold karma] only those latent impressions (vāsanās) become manifest that are suited to its ripening.

jātideśakālavyavahitānāṃ apyānantaryaṃ smṛtisaṃskārayorekarūpatvāt ||

Jaatideshakaalavyavahitaanaam apyaanantaryam smritisamskaarayorekaruupatvaat ||

Even when separated by birth, place and time, [the impressions] remain in unbroken succession, because memory and latent impressions (saṃskāras) are of one form.

tāsāṃ anāditvaṃ cāśiṣo nityatvāt ||

Taasaam anaaditvam chaashisho nityatvaat ||

And they have no beginning, since the will to be is perpetual.

hetuphalāśrayālambanaiḥ saṃgṛhītatvādeṣāṃ abhāve tadabhāvaḥ ||

Hetuphalaashrayaalambanaih samgrihiitatvaadeshaam abhaave tadabhaavah ||

Since they are held together by cause, result, substratum and object, when these are absent, they too are absent.

atītānāgataṃ svarūpato'styadhvabhedāddharmāṇāṃ ||

Atiitaanaagatam svaruupato'styadhvabhedaaddharmaanaam ||

The past and the future exist in their own nature; the difference lies in the time-path of their properties.

te vyaktasūkṣmā guṇātmānaḥ ||

Te vyaktasuukshmaa gunaatmaanah ||

They [those properties] are manifest or subtle, and their nature is the guṇas.

pariṇāmaikatvādvastutattvaṃ ||

Parinaamaikatvaadvastutattvam ||

The reality of an object follows from the oneness of its transformation.

vastusāmye cittabhedāttayorvibhaktaḥ panthāḥ ||

Vastusaamye chittabhedaattayorvibhaktah panthaah ||

Since the object is the same while minds differ, the two [object and mind] follow separate paths.

na caikacittatantraṃ vastu tadapramāṇakaṃ tadā kiṃ syāt ||

Na chaikachittatantram vastu tadapramaanakam tadaa kim syaat ||

Nor is an object dependent on a single mind; for what would it be when unperceived by that mind?

taduparāgāpekṣatvāt cittasya vastu jñātājñātaṃ ||

Taduparaagaapekshatvaat chittasya vastu jnaataajnaatam ||

An object is known or unknown depending on whether the mind is coloured by it.

sadā jñātāścittavṛttayas tatprabhoḥ puruṣasyāpariṇāmitvāt ||

Sadaa jnaataashchittavrittayas tatprabhoh purushasyaaparinaamitvaat ||

The turnings of the mind are always known to their lord, the puruṣa, because the puruṣa is unchanging.

na tatsvābhāsaṃ dṛśyatvāt ||

Na tatsvaabhaasam drishyatvaat ||

The mind is not self-luminous, since it is itself an object of seeing.

ekasamaye cobhayānavadhāraṇaṃ ||

Ekasamaye chobhayaanavadhaaranam ||

Nor can both [the mind and its object] be ascertained at one and the same moment.

cittāntaradṛśye buddhibuddheratiprasaṅgaḥ smṛtisaṃkaraśca ||

Chittaantaradrishye buddhibuddheratiprasangah smritisamkarashcha ||

If one mind were seen by another, there would be an endless regress of cognitions of cognitions, and a confusion of memories.

citerapratisaṃkramāyāstadākārāpattau svabuddhisaṃvedanaṃ ||

Chiterapratisamkramaayaastadaakaaraapattau svabuddhisamvedanam ||

Consciousness does not pass over [into anything], yet when [the mind] takes on its form, there is awareness of one's own intellect.

draṣṭṛdṛśyoparaktaṃ cittaṃ sarvārthaṃ ||

Drashtridrishyoparaktam chittam sarvaartham ||

The mind, coloured by both the seer and the seen, can take on every object.

tadasaṃkhyeyavāsanācitraṃ api parārthaṃ saṃhatyakāritvāt ||

Tadasamkhyeyavaasanaachitram api paraartham samhatyakaaritvaat ||

Though variegated by countless vāsanās, the mind exists for another's sake, since it acts only as a composite.

viśeṣadarśina ātmabhāvabhāvanāvinivṛttiḥ ||

Visheshadarshina aatmabhaavabhaavanaavinivrittih ||

For one who sees the distinction, the brooding over the nature of the self comes to an end.

tadā vivekanimnaṃ kaivalyaprāgbhāraṃ cittaṃ ||

Tadaa vivekanimnam kaivalyapraagbhaaram chittam ||

Then the mind inclines toward discernment and leans toward kaivalya.

tacchidreṣu pratyayāntarāṇi saṃskārebhyaḥ ||

Tachchhidreshu pratyayaantaraani samskaarebhyah ||

In its gaps, other thoughts arise from latent impressions.

hānaṃ eṣāṃ kleśavaduktaṃ ||

Haanam eshaam kleshavaduktam ||

Their removal is as has been described for the afflictions (kleśas).

prasaṃkhyāne'pyakusīdasya sarvathāvivekakhyāterdharmameghaḥsamādhiḥ ||

Prasamkhyaane'pyakusiidasya sarvathaavivekakhyaaterdharmameghahsamaadhih ||

For one who has no self-interest even in the highest knowledge (prasaṃkhyāna), constant discerning insight brings the samādhi called dharma-megha ['cloud of dharma'].

tataḥ kleśakarmanivṛttiḥ ||

Tatah kleshakarmanivrittih ||

From that, afflictions and karma cease.

tadā sarvāvaraṇamalāpetasya jñānasyānantyājjñeyaṃ alpaṃ ||

Tadaa sarvaavaranamalaapetasya jnaanasyaanantyaajjneyam alpam ||

Then, knowledge being freed of all veils and impurities, it becomes infinite, and what remains to be known is little.

tataḥ kṛtārthānāṃ pariṇāmakramaparisamāptir guṇānāṃ ||

Tatah kritaarthaanaam parinaamakramaparisamaaptir gunaanaam ||

Then the guṇas, their purpose fulfilled, complete the sequence of their transformations.

kṣaṇapratiyogī pariṇāmāparāntanirgrāhyaḥ kramaḥ ||

Kshanapratiyogii parinaamaaparaantanirgraahyah kramah ||

Sequence is the counterpart of moments, and is grasped only at the end-point of a transformation.
