The Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad, the great forest teaching, is the longest of the principal Upaniṣads and belongs to the Śukla Yajurveda, where it forms the closing part of the Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa; the text given here is the Kāṇva recension. Its central figure is the sage Yājñavalkya, and it holds many of the most influential teachings in the Upaniṣads: the self described only as neti neti, not this, not that; the inner controller who rules the world from within; the imperishable about which Gārgī questions him; the self as the light by which a man lives when sun, moon, fire and speech have gone out; waking, dream and deep sleep; and the farewell to Maitreyī, in which everything is dear for the sake of the self. It also gives the prayer asato mā sad gamaya, the verse pūrṇam adaḥ pūrṇam idam, and the three syllables da, da, da of the thunder. Because the text runs to 435 passages, AdiVeda publishes it as its six books, one page each, with the Sanskrit, Roman (IAST) transliteration, a simple pronunciation guide, and Hindi and English meanings for every passage.

The text is printed without Vedic accents.
