The Gopī Gīta is sung in Kṛṣṇa's absence. He has vanished from the rāsa circle; the gopīs search the forest for him, fail to find him, and sit down on the bank of the Yamunā and sing — nineteen verses, each ending in the same metre, addressed to someone who is not there. It is the most quoted passage of the tenth book after the rāsa chapters themselves. When you go out to the woods by day, a moment becomes an age to those who cannot see you; and when you come back in the evening with your face framed in dark curls, the maker of eyelids becomes a fool for having made them blink. They tell him that his glance and his smile have deceived them; that his words are nectar to those who repeat them and wealth to those who give them away; that his feet are held on their breasts and they are afraid of hurting them with the pressure — and that those same feet are walking now on the hard forest ground. 19 verses, the chapter complete.
Textual source ·
This is the complete Gopī Gīta, Bhāgavata Purāṇa, Skandha 10, Chapter 31, 19 verses. The Sanskrit follows Sanskrit Wikisource, Śrīmad Bhāgavata Purāṇa (श्रीमद्भागवतपुराणम्), a public-domain text. It has been checked verse by verse against the GRETIL electronic text of the Bhāgavata Purāṇa (entered by Ulrich Stiehl), which is used for comparison only and is not reproduced here. The two agree almost letter for letter, and no correction to the Sanskrit was needed. A chapter-summary line that the online source had placed before the first verse is not part of the Purāṇa and is omitted. The English and Hindi introductions above are original writing by AdiVeda; they give context and summary, not a translation of the Sanskrit and not a traditional commentary.

The gopīs said: Because you were born here, Vraja surpasses every place, and Indirā [Lakṣmī] makes her home here for ever. Beloved, show yourself. Your own, whose lives rest in you, are searching for you in every direction.

Lord of love, giver of boons, your eyes rob the beauty from the heart of a lotus grown full in an autumn pool, and with them you are striking down us, your maidservants who ask no wage. Is this not killing too?

Greatest of all, again and again you have saved us: from death in the poisoned water, from the serpent-demon, from rain and storm-wind, from the fire of lightning, from the bull, from Maya's son, and from danger on every side.

Surely you are not just a gopī's son. You are the witness dwelling within every embodied being. Friend, it was at the prayer of Vikhanas [Brahmā], for the protection of the world, that you rose in the line of the Sātvatas.

Foremost of the Vṛṣṇis, dear one, your lotus hand gives fearlessness to those who come to your feet in dread of the round of birth and death; it fulfils desires, and it once took Śrī's hand. Lay that hand upon our heads.

Remover of Vraja's sorrows, hero of women, whose smile breaks the pride of your own people: friend, take us to you, for we are your servants, and let us see your lovely lotus face.

Your lotus feet draw away the sins of those who bow down; they follow the grazing herds; they are Śrī's dwelling; they were set upon the serpent's hoods. Place them on our breasts, and cut out the desire that lies in our hearts.

Lotus-eyed hero, your sweet voice, with its charming words that delight even the wise, has left us — your willing servants — in a daze. Revive us with the nectar of your lips.

The nectar of your story is life to those who burn with sorrow; poets have praised it; it washes away impurity; it brings blessing to whoever hears it, and it is rich and far-reaching. Those who recite it across the earth are the most generous of givers.

Lord, when you leave Vraja driving the cattle out to graze, we think of your feet, lovely as lotuses, hurting on stones, grass and sharp shoots, and our minds, beloved, are thrown into distress.

Hero, as the day draws to a close you come back with your lotus face framed in dark curls and thick with dust, and by showing it to us again and again you stir love in our minds.

Lover, ender of pain: your lotus feet grant the wishes of those who bow, are worshipped by the lotus-born [Brahmā], adorn the earth, are what one turns to in meditation in times of trouble, and give the deepest peace. Set them upon our breasts.

Hero, give us the nectar of your lips — the nectar that deepens love and ends grief, that your sounding flute kisses closely, and that makes people forget every other attachment.

When you wander the forest by day, a single instant becomes an age for those who cannot see you. And for those who gaze up at your lovely face with its curling locks, the one who made eyelids for their eyes seems a fool.

Beloved, the tender lotus feet that we set gently on our hard breasts, afraid of hurting them — on those same feet you are roaming the forest. Do they not ache from pebbles and the like? Our minds reel at the thought, for you are our very life.
