Bhishma Stuti

Śrīmad Bhāgavata Purāṇa 1.9.32–42

Continue exploring ·

Bhīṣma's prayer is spoken from a bed of arrows. The old warrior, who had chosen the hour of his own death, turns his mind from everything else and fixes it on Kṛṣṇa, who is standing before him; and what he describes is not the Lord of the philosophers but the charioteer he had faced in battle — the dust of horses in his hair, his face damp with the sweat of the fight, his skin cut by Bhīṣma's own arrows, and the look on it as he broke his vow not to take up a weapon and came down from the chariot to charge, because his devotee's word mattered more to him than his own. Bhīṣma asks for nothing but that his mind rest there: in the friend who drove Arjuna's chariot, in the face whose beauty in that moment he had seen better than anyone, in the one who is the same in all beings and appears differently to each as the sun does to those who look at it. 11 verses, Bhāgavata 1.9.32–42.

This is Bhīṣma's hymn to Kṛṣṇa, Bhāgavata Purāṇa, Skandha 1, Chapter 9, verses 32–42 — an extract from the chapter, not the whole chapter. The Sanskrit follows Sanskrit Wikisource, Śrīmad Bhāgavata Purāṇa (श्रीमद्भागवतपुराणम्), a public-domain text. It has been checked verse by verse against the GRETIL electronic text of the Bhāgavata Purāṇa (entered by Ulrich Stiehl), which is used for comparison only and is not reproduced here. A few obvious typing and scanning errors in the online source were corrected where the comparison text confirmed the right reading; genuine variant readings have been kept as this text has them. Where the source writes as separate words what the comparison text joins by sandhi, the source's word division has been kept. The English and Hindi introductions above are original writing by AdiVeda; they give context and summary, not a translation of the Sanskrit and not a traditional commentary.

Verse meanings ·

The Hindi and English meaning under each verse is AdiVeda's own editorial translation, made directly from the Sanskrit printed here for this edition. It is meant to help you follow the text — it is not quoted from any published translation and it is not a traditional commentary. Where traditions read a passage differently, the meaning says so briefly.

Śrī Bhīṣma said: Now let this mind of mine, emptied of craving, be given over to the Lord, foremost of the Sātvatas, the boundless one — who, complete in his own bliss, at times takes up prakṛti for his play, and from that the stream of becoming flows.

His form enchants the three worlds; he is dark as the tamāla tree, wears a fine garment bright as sunlight, and his lotus face is framed by curling locks. May my love for this friend of Arjuna be without flaw.

In battle his scattered hair was grey with the dust of the horses, his face was beaded with sweat, his skin was being torn by my sharp arrows and his armour glittered. In that Kṛṣṇa let my self find its rest.

Sapadi sakhivacho nishamya madhye
Nijaparayorbalayo ratham niveshya |
Sthitavati parasainikaayurakshnaa
Hritavati paarthasakhe ratirmamaastu || 35 ||

At his friend's word he at once drove the chariot between the two armies, his own and the enemy's, and as he stood there his very glance drew off the lives of the opposing soldiers. May my love be for Pārtha's friend.

When Arjuna surveyed the ranks drawn up across the field and turned away, judging it a sin to kill his own kin, it was he who removed that mistaken thinking with knowledge of the Self. May my love rest at the feet of that Supreme One.

Svanigamamapahaaya matpratijnaam
Ritamadhi kartumavapluto rathasthah |
Dhritaratha charano'bhyayaat chaladguh
Haririva hantumibham gatottariiyah || 37 ||

Setting aside his own vow so that my vow might come true, he leapt down from the chariot, seized a chariot wheel and charged, the ground shaking under him and his upper cloth slipping away, like a lion rushing in to kill an elephant.

Shitavishikhahato vishiirnadamshah

Prasabham abhisasaara madvadhaartham

Struck by my sharp arrows, his armour shattered and his body running with blood, he drove at me with force to kill me, his attacker. May that Lord Mukunda be my goal.

Vijayarathakutumba aattatotre
Dhritahayarashmini tat shriyekshaniiye |

He made himself one of the household of Arjuna's chariot, whip in hand and reins held tight, a sight made lovely by his splendour; those who fell here while looking at him attained their true form. As I die, may my love be for that Lord.

The cowherd women, whose pride had grown great from his graceful walk, his playfulness, his sweet smile and his loving looks, lost themselves in rapture, acted out what he had done, and — it is told — came to share his very nature.

Munigana nripavaryasankule'ntah
Sadasi yudhishthira raajasuuya eshaam |
Arhanam upapeda iikshaniiyo

At Yudhiṣṭhira's rājasūya, in the hall crowded with sages and the greatest kings, he who was worth beholding received the first honour among them all. That very Self now stands revealed before my eyes.

Tamimamahamajam shariirabhaajaam
Hridi hridi dhishthitamaatma kalpitaanaam |
Pratidrishamiva naikadhaarkamekam
Samadhigato'smi vidhuuta bhedamohah || 42 ||

This unborn one, seated in the heart of every embodied being he has brought forth, I have now come to know — as the one sun that seems many to each separate eye. My delusion of difference has fallen away.
