Kunti Stuti

Śrīmad Bhāgavata Purāṇa 1.8.18–43

Continue exploring ·

Kuntī's prayer is the first great stuti of the Bhāgavata, and the strangest request in it. Kṛṣṇa is leaving Hastināpura; Kuntī, widowed mother of the Pāṇḍavas, comes out to stop him, and what she asks for is calamity. Let those calamities come again and again, she says, so that we may see you again and again — for seeing you means no more seeing of this round of birth and death. She had lost a husband, seen her sons exiled, her co-wife's children killed, and her own line nearly ended; and her conclusion is that it was in each of those extremities that Kṛṣṇa came. Before that she names him as the one beyond the senses, unborn though born, the child who was bound by a cowherd woman's rope and stood there with frightened eyes and tears — and she says that this image confuses her more than any philosophy. The prayer ends by asking that her attachment to her kinsmen be cut like a river's flow turned to the sea. 26 verses, Bhāgavata 1.8.18–43.

Textual source ·

This is Queen Kuntī's hymn to Kṛṣṇa, Bhāgavata Purāṇa, Skandha 1, Chapter 8, verses 18–43 — an extract from the chapter, not the whole chapter. The Sanskrit follows Sanskrit Wikisource, Śrīmad Bhāgavata Purāṇa (श्रीमद्भागवतपुराणम्), a public-domain text. It has been checked verse by verse against the GRETIL electronic text of the Bhāgavata Purāṇa (entered by Ulrich Stiehl), which is used for comparison only and is not reproduced here. A few obvious typing and scanning errors in the online source were corrected where the comparison text confirmed the right reading; genuine variant readings have been kept as this text has them. The English and Hindi introductions above are original writing by AdiVeda; they give context and summary, not a translation of the Sanskrit and not a traditional commentary.

Verse meanings ·

The Hindi and English meaning under each verse is AdiVeda's own editorial translation, made directly from the Sanskrit printed here for this edition. It is meant to help you follow the text — it is not quoted from any published translation and it is not a traditional commentary. Where traditions read a passage differently, the meaning says so briefly.

Kuntyuvaacha |
Namasye purusham tvaa''dyam iishvaram prakriteh param |
Alakshyam sarvabhuutaanaam antarbahiravasthitam || 18 ||

Kuntī said: I bow to you, the first Puruṣa, the Lord who stands beyond prakṛti, present within and outside all beings and yet seen by none of them.

Na lakshyase muudhadrishaa nato naatyadharo yathaa || 19 ||

Veiled by the curtain of māyā, beyond the senses (Adhokṣaja) and unchanging, you go unrecognized by a confused and unknowing eye, just as an actor in costume is not known for who he is.

Tathaa paramahamsaanaam muniinaam amalaatmanaam |
Bhaktiyogavidhaanaartham katham pashyema hi striyah || 20 ||

You come to lay out the path of bhakti-yoga even for paramahaṃsa sages whose hearts are spotless; how then could we women hope to see you?

Krishnaaya vaasudevaaya devakiinamdanaaya cha |
Namdagopakumaaraaya govimdaaya namo namah || 21 ||

Homage upon homage to Kṛṣṇa, to Vāsudeva, the joy of Devakī, the boy of Nanda the cowherd, to Govinda.

Namah pankajanaabhaaya namah pankajamaaline |
Namah pankajanetraaya namaste pankajaanghraye || 22 ||

Homage to you whose navel bears a lotus, who wear a garland of lotuses, whose eyes are lotuses and whose feet are lotuses.

Yathaa hrishiikesha khalena devakii
Kamsena ruddhaatichiram shuchaarpitaa |
Vimochitaaham cha sahaatmajaa vibho
Tvayaiva naathena muhurvipadganaat || 23 ||

Hṛṣīkeśa, just as you freed Devakī, whom wicked Kaṃsa kept locked away so long and sunk in grief, so too, all-pervading Lord, you alone as our protector have rescued me and my sons from one danger after another.

From poison, from a great fire, from the gaze of man-eaters, from the assembly of the wicked, from the hardships of exile in the forest, from the weapons of many great warriors in battle after battle, and from the weapon of Droṇa's son — from all of these, Hari, you shielded us.

Vipadah santu taah shashvat tatra tatra jagadguro |
Bhavato darshanam yatsyaad apunarbhavadarshanam || 25 ||

Let those misfortunes keep coming, teacher of the world, wherever we may be, since in them we see you — and to see you is to see no more of rebirth.

A man whose arrogance swells with high birth, power, learning and riches is not even fit to call upon you, for you come within reach of those who possess nothing.

Namo'kinchanavittaaya nivrittagunavrittaye |
Aatmaaraamaaya shaantaaya kaivalyapataye namah || 27 ||

Homage to you, the wealth of those who have nothing, in whom the workings of the guṇas have come to rest, content in the Self, serene, the lord of kaivalya.

Manye tvaam kaalamiishaanam anaadinidhanam vibhum |
Samam charantam sarvatra bhuutaanaam yanmithah kalih || 28 ||

I take you to be Time, the ruler, without beginning or end, pervading all, moving evenly everywhere — while among beings there is strife with one another.

No one knows, Lord, what you mean to do when you act out a human life. No one is ever your favourite and no one your enemy; it is people's own minds that see partiality in you.

Janma karma cha vishvaatman ajasyaakarturaatmanah |
Tiryan nrishishu yaadahsu tad atyantavidambanam || 30 ||

Soul of the universe, you are the unborn Self who does nothing; that you should take birth and act among animals, humans, sages and creatures of the water is the height of make-believe.

Yaa te dashaashrukalila anjana sambhramaaksham |
Vaktram niniiya bhayabhaavanayaa sthitasya
Saa maam vimohayati bhiirapi yadbibheti || 31 ||

When you had been naughty and the gopī picked up a rope to tie you, you stood with your face lowered in fear, your startled eyes streaming with tears and smudged kohl. That sight — of you, whom fear itself fears — leaves me bewildered.

Kechid aahuh ajam jaatam punyashlokasya kiirtaye |
Yadoh priyasya anvavaaye malayasyeva chandanam || 32 ||

Some say that the unborn one took birth in the line of his beloved Yadu to spread the renown of that king of holy fame, as sandalwood appears on the Malaya hills.

Apare vasudevasya devakyaam yaachito'bhyagaat |
Ajastvamasya kshemaaya vadhaaya cha suradvishaam || 33 ||

Others say that, though unborn, you came as the child of Vasudeva and Devakī because they had asked for you, for the welfare of this world and for the destruction of the enemies of the gods.

Bhaaraavataaranaayaanye bhuvo naava ivodadhau |
Siidantyaa bhuuribhaarena jaato hyaatmabhuvaarthitah || 34 ||

Still others say you were born at Brahmā's request, to lift the load from the earth, which was sinking under its great weight like a boat on the sea.

Bhave'smin klishyamaanaanaam avidyaakaamakarmabhih |
Shravana smaranaarhaani karishyan iti kechana || 35 ||

And some say you came with the thought, 'I will do deeds worth hearing about and remembering, for those who suffer in this world from ignorance, desire and karma.'

People who hear of your deeds, sing them, speak of them over and over, remember them and delight in them — they are the ones who soon see your lotus feet, where the flow of rebirth comes to a stop.

Lord, you who have done everything for us — will you now leave your friends who live by your support? We have made enemies among kings, and we have no refuge but your lotus feet.

Bhavato'darshanam yarhi hrishiikaanaam iveshituh || 38 ||

Without the sight of you, what are we Pāṇḍavas, or the Yadus with us, for all our name and form? We would be like the senses when their master has gone.

Neyam shobhishyate tatra yathedaaniim gadaadhara |
Tvatpadaih ankitaa bhaati svalakshanavilakshitaih || 39 ||

Gadādhara, this land, which now glows marked with your footprints and their distinctive signs, will not look so lovely once you are gone.

Ime janapadaah svriddhaah supakvaushadhiviirudhah |
Vanaadri nadii udanvanto hyedhante tava viikshitaih || 40 ||

It is under your glance that these lands prosper, their herbs and plants ripen well, and their forests, hills, rivers and seas flourish.

Atha vishvesha vishvaatman vishvamuurte svakeshu me |
Snehapaasham imam chhindhi dridham paandushu vrishnishu || 41 ||

So, Lord of the universe, its Self and its embodiment, cut through this tight rope of affection that binds me to my own people, the Pāṇḍavas and the Vṛṣṇis.

Tvayi me'nanyavishayaa matirmadhupate'sakrit |
Ratim udvahataat addhaa gangevaugham udanvati || 42 ||

Lord of the Madhus, may my mind, drawn to nothing else, carry its love to you without pause, as the Gaṅgā carries its current into the sea.

Śrī Kṛṣṇa, friend of Arjuna, bull among the Vṛṣṇis, fire to the royal houses that wrong the earth, of never-failing valour; Govinda, who descend to end the suffering of cows, brāhmaṇas and gods; lord of yoga, teacher of all — Lord, homage to you.
