This is the very first hymn of the Ṛgveda — Maṇḍala 1, Sūkta 1 — and so the opening of the oldest text of the Hindu tradition. Its seer is Madhucchandas, son of Viśvāmitra, and it is addressed to Agni, the god of fire, in nine short verses in the gāyatrī metre. Its first words, agnim īḷe purohitam, “I praise Agni, the one placed in front”, are among the best-known lines in Sanskrit. Agni is praised here in his role in the sacrifice: he is the priest who invokes the gods and carries the offerings to them, the guardian of ṛta, the order of the world, and a friend who is as easy to approach as a father is for his son. The hymn is traditionally recited at the start of Vedic study, and learning it by heart has for centuries been the first step in learning the Ṛgveda. These are among the oldest hymns in any Indo-European language, and their language is often archaic; where scholars and traditional commentators read a word differently, the meaning here says so briefly. 9 verses, the complete sūkta.

Ṛgveda 1.1, complete (9 verses). The Sanskrit follows Sanskrit Wikisource, ऋग्वेदः सूक्तं १.१, a public-domain text, without the ॐ that the online page places before the first verse, which is not part of the saṃhitā. It has been checked verse by verse against Theodor Aufrecht's edition of the Ṛgveda (Bonn, 1877; public domain) as entered in GRETIL, and agrees with it in every verse. The Ṛgveda is chanted with pitch accents (svaras); they are not shown here — the text is given unaccented, as in the source, and it is not presented as an accented Vedic text. The English and Hindi introductions above are original writing by AdiVeda; they give context and summary, not a translation of the Sanskrit and not a traditional commentary.

To you, Agni, day by day, at dusk and at dawn, we come with our thought, bringing homage —

rājantamadhvarāṇāṃ gopāmṛtasya dīdivim,

So, Agni, be easy for us to reach, as a father is for his son. Stay with us for our well-being.
