Ṛgveda 1.89 is a hymn of the seer Gotama Rāhūgaṇa addressed to all the gods (the Viśvedevas). It opens with a line often quoted as a motto for open-minded learning, ā no bhadrāḥ kratavo yantu viśvataḥ — “may good intentions come to us from every side.” Two of its verses have had a long second life. Verses 6 and 8 — svasti na indro vṛddhaśravāḥ and bhadraṃ karṇebhiḥ śṛṇuyāma devāḥ — are recited together as the invocation of peace (śānti-pāṭha) that opens the Upaniṣads of the Atharvaveda, including the Muṇḍaka, Māṇḍūkya and Praśna, which are published in this library. The hymn’s last verse is a famous praise of Aditi, the boundless mother of the gods, as sky, air, mother, father and son, “what has been born and what will be born.” Between them the hymn asks for a full life of a hundred autumns, “in which sons become fathers”, and asks the gods not to cut it short. These are among the oldest hymns in any Indo-European language, and their language is often archaic; where scholars and traditional commentators read a word differently, the meaning here says so briefly. 10 verses, the complete sūkta.

८९ · Ṛgveda 1.89 — To All the Gods

ā no bhadrāḥ kratavo yantu viśvato'dabdhāso aparītāsa udbhidaḥ,
devā no yathā sadamidvṛdhe asannaprāyuvo rakṣitāro divedive || 1 ||

Aa no bhadraah kratavo yantu vishvato'dabdhaaso apariitaasa udbhidah, devaa no yathaa sadamidvridhe asannapraayuvo rakshitaaro divedive || 1 ||

May auspicious intentions come to us from every side — undeceived, unhindered, bursting forth — so that the gods may always be there for our growth, our guardians day after day, never failing.

devānāṃ bhadrā sumatirṛjūyatāṃ devānāṃ rātirabhi no ni vartatām,
devānāṃ sakhyamupa sedimā vayaṃ devā na āyuḥ pra tirantu jīvase || 2 ||

Devaanaam bhadraa sumatirrijuuyataam devaanaam raatirabhi no ni vartataam, devaanaam sakhyamupa sedimaa vayam devaa na aayuh pra tirantu jiivase || 2 ||

May the gods’ kindly favour towards those who walk straight, and the gods’ gifts, turn towards us. We have sought the friendship of the gods; may the gods lengthen our life, so that we may live.

tānpūrvayā nividā hūmahe vayaṃ bhagaṃ mitramaditiṃ dakṣamasridham,
aryamaṇaṃ varuṇaṃ somamaśvinā sarasvatī naḥ subhagā mayaskarat || 3 ||

Taanpuurvayaa nividaa huumahe vayam bhagam mitramaditim dakshamasridham, aryamanam varunam somamashvinaa sarasvatii nah subhagaa mayaskarat || 3 ||

With the ancient invocation we call on them — Bhaga, Mitra, Aditi, Dakṣa, the unfailing one, Aryaman, Varuṇa, Soma and the Aśvins. May Sarasvatī, bringer of good fortune, give us joy.

tanno vāto mayobhu vātu bheṣajaṃ tanmātā pṛthivī tatpitā dyauḥ,
tadgrāvāṇaḥ somasuto mayobhuvastadaśvinā śṛṇutaṃ dhiṣṇyā yuvam || 4 ||

Tanno vaato mayobhu vaatu bheshajam tanmaataa prithivii tatpitaa dyauh, tadgraavaanah somasuto mayobhuvastadashvinaa shrinutam dhishnyaa yuvam || 4 ||

May the wind blow healing to us that brings comfort; may mother Earth and father Sky give it; may the soma-pressing stones that bring comfort give it. O wise Aśvins, hear this.

tamīśānaṃ jagatastasthuṣaspatiṃ dhiyaṃjinvamavase hūmahe vayam,
pūṣā no yathā vedasāmasadvṛdhe rakṣitā pāyuradabdhaḥ svastaye || 5 ||

Tamiishaanam jagatastasthushaspatim dhiyamjinvamavase huumahe vayam, puushaa no yathaa vedasaamasadvridhe rakshitaa paayuradabdhah svastaye || 5 ||

We call for help on the ruler, lord of what moves and what stands still, who quickens our thought. May Pūṣan be there for the growth of our wealth — our guardian and protector, undeceived, for our well-being.

svasti na indro vṛddhaśravāḥ svasti naḥ pūṣā viśvavedāḥ,
svasti nastārkṣyo ariṣṭanemiḥ svasti no bṛhaspatirdadhātu || 6 ||

Svasti na indro vriddhashravaah svasti nah puushaa vishvavedaah, svasti nastaarkshyo arishtanemih svasti no brihaspatirdadhaatu || 6 ||

May Indra of great fame grant us well-being; may Pūṣan who knows all grant us well-being; may Tārkṣya, whose wheel is unharmed, grant us well-being; may Bṛhaspati grant us well-being.

pṛṣadaśvā marutaḥ pṛśnimātaraḥ śubhaṃyāvāno vidatheṣu jagmayaḥ,
agnijihvā manavaḥ sūracakṣaso viśve no devā avasā gamanniha || 7 ||

Prishadashvaa marutah prishnimaatarah shubhamyaavaano vidatheshu jagmayah, agnijihvaa manavah suurachakshaso vishve no devaa avasaa gamanniha || 7 ||

With dappled horses, sons of mother Pṛśni, moving in splendour, coming to the assemblies, with Agni as their tongue and the sun as their eye, thoughtful — may the Maruts and all the gods come here to us with their help.

bhadraṃ karṇebhiḥ śṛṇuyāma devā bhadraṃ paśyemākṣabhiryajatrāḥ,
sthirairaṅgaistuṣṭuvāṃsastanūbhirvyaśema devahitaṃ yadāyuḥ || 8 ||

Bhadram karnebhih shrinuyaama devaa bhadram pashyemaakshabhiryajatraah, sthirairangaistushtuvaamsastanuubhirvyashema devahitam yadaayuh || 8 ||

O gods, may we hear with our ears what is good; O holy ones, may we see with our eyes what is good. Praising you with steady limbs and bodies, may we reach the span of life the gods have set.

śataminnu śarado anti devā yatrā naścakrā jarasaṃ tanūnām,
putrāso yatra pitaro bhavanti mā no madhyā rīriṣatāyurgantoḥ || 9 ||

Shataminnu sharado anti devaa yatraa nashchakraa jarasam tanuunaam, putraaso yatra pitaro bhavanti maa no madhyaa riirishataayurgantoh || 9 ||

A hundred autumns lie before us, O gods, within which you have set old age for our bodies, and within which sons become fathers. Do not cut short our life in the middle of its course.

aditirdyauraditirantarikṣamaditirmātā sa pitā sa putraḥ,
viśve devā aditiḥ pañca janā aditirjātamaditirjanitvam || 10 ||

Aditirdyauraditirantarikshamaditirmaataa sa pitaa sa putrah, vishve devaa aditih pancha janaa aditirjaatamaditirjanitvam || 10 ||

Aditi is the sky, Aditi the mid-air, Aditi the mother, she the father, she the son. Aditi is all the gods, Aditi the five peoples; Aditi is what has been born and what will be born.
