Narada Bhakti Sutra

देवर्षि नारद को परम्परा से आरोपित · Traditionally ascribed to the sage Nārada

Continue exploring · आगे पढ़ें

The Nārada Bhakti Sūtra is the classic short manual of the path of devotion: eighty-four aphorisms traditionally ascribed to the sage Nārada. It defines devotion as supreme love for God, immortal in nature, and distinguishes it from desire: what it renounces is not the world's work but the claim on its fruit. It records the differing definitions of earlier teachers — Vyāsa, Garga and Śāṇḍilya — before giving Nārada's own: to offer every act to Him, and to feel utter distress at forgetting Him. It argues that devotion is higher than ritual, knowledge and yoga because it is itself the fruit, not a means to something else; it lists the means — giving up attachment and bad company, keeping the company of the great, hearing and singing of God — and warns against disputation. The closing sūtras describe devotees who purify the earth, in whom distinctions of birth, learning, appearance, family and wealth fall away, and set out the eleven forms that the one love can take. Each sūtra is given with Roman transliteration (IAST), a simple pronunciation guide, and Hindi and English meanings.

Textual source · पाठ-स्रोत

This is the complete Nārada Bhakti Sūtra, 84 sūtras; the commentaries are not included. The Sanskrit follows the transcription of the text on Sanskrit Wikisource. It has been checked sūtra by sūtra against the electronic text of the Sanskrit Documents collection (encoded by A. Hattangadi), which divides the work into five chapters and is used here for comparison only; it is not reproduced. The two agree closely. 23 readings were corrected from the comparison text — mostly a dropped final virāma (for example नानामतभेदात् for नानामतभेदात), together with दार्ढ्यात् for दाढ्यात् (12), बुद्धिनाश for बुद्दिनाश (44), प्रमाणान्तरस्य for प्रमाणान्त्रस्य (59), and the names कौण्डिन्य, शेष and हनुमद् in the closing list (83); a stray '१२' printed inside sūtra 36 was removed. Where the two texts offer different but acceptable readings, the base is kept — for example परमप्रेमरूपा (2) and स्त्रीधननास्तिकवैरिचरित्रम् (63). The section headings are editorial and follow the usual division of the work; the sūtras themselves are numbered continuously from 1 to 84. The English and Hindi introductions above are original writing by AdiVeda; they give context and summary, not a translation of the Sanskrit and not a traditional commentary.

Verse meanings ·

The Hindi and English meaning under each verse is AdiVeda's own editorial translation, made directly from the Sanskrit printed here for this edition. It is meant to help you follow the text — it is not quoted from any published translation and it is not a traditional commentary. Where traditions read a passage differently, the meaning says so briefly.

tallakṣaṇāni vācyante nānāmatabhedāt || 15 ||

नारद तो कहते हैं कि सारे आचरण उसी को अर्पित कर देना, और उसके विस्मरण में परम व्याकुलता होना — यही भक्ति है।

tadvihīnaṃ jārāṇāmiva || 23 ||

rājagṛhabhojanādiṣu tathaiva dṛṣṭatvāt || 31 ||

जैसे राजा के घर, भोजन आदि के दृष्टान्तों में देखा जाता है।

As is seen in the examples of the king's palace, of food and the like.

न तेन राजपरितोषः, क्षुधाशान्तिर्वा ॥ ३२ ॥

na tena rājaparitoṣaḥ, kṣudhāśāntirvā || 32 ||

Na tena raajaparitoshah, kshudhaashaantirvaa

उस (राजा के घर को जानने) से न राजा प्रसन्न होता है, न (भोजन को जानने से) भूख मिटती है।

Merely knowing about the palace does not please the king, nor does knowing about food still hunger.

तस्मात्सैव ग्राह्या मुमुक्षुभिः ॥ ३३ ॥

tasmātsaiva grāhyā mumukṣubhiḥ || 33 ||

Tasmaatsaiva graahyaa mumukshubhih

इसलिए मोक्ष चाहने वालों को वही (भक्ति) ग्रहण करनी चाहिए।

Therefore those who seek liberation should take up devotion alone.

tadeva sādhyatāṃ tadeva sādhyatām || 42 ||

Tadeva saadhyataam tadeva saadhyataam

उसी को साधो, उसी को साधो।

Strive for that alone; strive for that alone.

Because it is the cause of desire, anger, delusion, loss of memory, loss of understanding, and ruin altogether.

तरङ्गायिता अपीमे सङ्गात्समुद्रायन्ति ॥ ४५ ॥

taraṅgāyitā apīme saṅgātsamudrāyanti || 45 ||

Tarangaayitaa apiime sangaatsamudraayanti

ये (विकार) पहले तरंगों जैसे होते हैं, पर संग से समुद्र बन जाते हैं।

These at first are like ripples, but through company they become an ocean.

कस्तरति कस्तरति मायां यः सङ्गं त्यजति यो महानुभावं सेवते निर्ममो भवति ॥ ४६ ॥

kastarati kastarati māyāṃ yaḥ saṅgaṃ tyajati yo mahānubhāvaṃ sevate nirmamo bhavati || 46 ||

Kastarati kastarati maayaam yah sangam tyajati yo mahaanubhaavam sevate nirmamo bhavati

कौन माया को तरता है? कौन तरता है? — जो संग को छोड़ देता है, जो महानुभाव की सेवा करता है, जो ममता-रहित हो जाता है;

Who crosses māyā? Who crosses it? — He who gives up attachment, who serves the great-souled, who becomes free of 'mine';

यो विविक्तस्थानं सेवते, यो लोकबन्धमुन्मूलयति निस्त्रैगुण्यो भवति, यो योगक्षेमं त्यजति ॥ ४७ ॥

जो एकान्त स्थान का सेवन करता है, जो लोक के बन्धन को जड़ से उखाड़ देता है, जो तीनों गुणों से परे हो जाता है, जो योग-क्षेम (पाने और बचाने) की चिन्ता छोड़ देता है;

who resorts to a solitary place, who uproots his bondage to the world, who goes beyond the three guṇas, who gives up anxiety for gain and safety;

यः कर्मफलं त्यजति, कर्माणि संन्यस्यति ततो निर्द्वन्द्वो भवति ॥ ४८ ॥

yaḥ karmaphalaṃ tyajati, karmāṇi saṃnyasyati tato nirdvandvo bhavati || 48 ||

Yah karmaphalam tyajati, karmaani samnyasyati tato nirdvandvo bhavati

जो कर्मों का फल छोड़ देता है, कर्मों का संन्यास करता है और इस प्रकार द्वन्द्वों से परे हो जाता है;

who gives up the fruit of actions, renounces actions, and so goes beyond the pairs of opposites;

यो वेदानपि सन्न्यस्यति, केवलमविच्छिन्नानुरागं लभते ॥ ४९ ॥

sa tarati sa tarati sa lokāṃstārayati || 50 ||

Sa tarati sa tarati sa lokaamstaarayati

वही तरता है, वही तरता है, और वही लोगों को तार देता है।

Prakaashayate kvaapi paatre

वह कहीं-कहीं, किसी पात्र में प्रकट हो जाता है।

It shows itself here and there, in a fit vessel.

गुणरहितं कामनारहितं प्रतिक्षणवर्धमानमविच्छिन्नं सूक्ष्मतरमनुभवरूपम् ॥ ५४ ॥

guṇarahitaṃ kāmanārahitaṃ pratikṣaṇavardhamānamavicchinnaṃ sūkṣmataramanubhavarūpam || 54 ||

Gunarahitam kaamanaarahitam pratikshanavardhamaanamavichchhinnam suukshmataramanubhavaruupam

वह गुणों से रहित, कामना से रहित, प्रतिक्षण बढ़ने वाला, अविच्छिन्न, अत्यन्त सूक्ष्म और अनुभव-रूप है।

It is free of qualities, free of desire, increasing every moment, unbroken, subtler than the subtle, and of the nature of experience.

तत्प्राप्य तदेवावलोकयति, तदेव शृणोति, तदेव भाषयति, तदेव चिन्तयति ॥ ५५ ॥

tatprāpya tadevāvalokayati, tadeva śṛṇoti, tadeva bhāṣayati, tadeva cintayati || 55 ||

उसे पाकर (भक्त) उसी को देखता है, उसी को सुनता है, उसी की बात करता है, उसी का चिन्तन करता है।

Having attained it, he sees that alone, hears that alone, speaks of that alone, thinks of that alone.

गौणी त्रिधा गुणभेदादार्तादिभेदाद्वा ॥ ५६ ॥

gauṇī tridhā guṇabhedādārtādibhedādvā || 56 ||

Gaunii tridhaa gunabhedaadaartaadibhedaadvaa

गौणी भक्ति तीन प्रकार की है — गुणों के भेद से, अथवा आर्त आदि (अधिकारी) के भेद से।

Secondary devotion is of three kinds, by the difference of the guṇas, or by the difference between the distressed and the rest.

उत्तरस्मादुत्तरस्मात्पूर्वपूर्वा श्रेयाय भवति ॥ ५७ ॥

uttarasmāduttarasmātpūrvapūrvā śreyāya bhavati || 57 ||

Uttarasmaaduttarasmaatpuurvapuurvaa shreyaaya bhavati

इनमें उत्तरोत्तर की अपेक्षा पूर्व-पूर्व (सात्त्विक आदि) अधिक कल्याणकारी है।

Of these, each earlier kind is better for one's welfare than the one after it.

śāntirūpātparamānandarūpācca || 60 ||

Shaantiruupaatparamaanandaruupaachcha

और क्योंकि वह शान्ति-रूप तथा परम आनन्द-रूप है।

And because it is of the nature of peace and of supreme bliss.

lokahānau cintā na kāryā niveditātmalokavedatvāt || 61 ||

Lokahaanau chintaa na kaaryaa niveditaatmalokavedatvaat

लौकिक हानि की चिन्ता नहीं करनी चाहिए, क्योंकि लोक और वेद दोनों उसी को समर्पित कर दिए गए हैं।

One should not worry about worldly loss, for both world and scripture have been made over to Him.
