The Māṇḍūkya Upaniṣad, of the Atharvaveda, is the shortest of the principal Upaniṣads — twelve prose mantras — and one of the most studied. Its subject is the syllable Oṃ and the Self (ātman), which it treats as one and the same. It begins by saying that Oṃ is everything: past, present and future, and whatever lies beyond time. It then describes the Self as having four quarters, which correspond to the states every person passes through. The first is the waking self, Vaiśvānara, whose awareness faces outward to the physical world; the second is the dreaming self, Taijasa, whose awareness faces inward to a world made by the mind; the third is the self in dreamless sleep, Prājña, a single undivided mass of awareness, full of bliss. The fourth, turīya, is not a further state alongside the others but what underlies all three: not inward, not outward, beyond description, peaceful and non-dual — “that is the Self; that is what is to be known.” The last mantras map these four onto the sounds of Oṃ — A, U and M, and the silence after them. Gauḍapāda’s famous verse commentary, the Māṇḍūkya Kārikā, is a separate work and is not included here. 12 mantras, complete, with the traditional invocation of peace.

This is the complete Māṇḍūkya Upaniṣad, 12 mantras, with the traditional invocation of peace (भद्रं कर्णेभिः). The Sanskrit follows Sanskrit Wikisource, माण्डुक्योपनिषत्, a public-domain text; the invocation, which that page gives only in part, is given in full from a second transcription on Sanskrit Wikisource. The text has been checked mantra by mantra against that second transcription and against two electronic texts held by GRETIL — the Upaniṣad with the commentary ascribed to Śaṅkara (Sansknet project) and an alternative version entered by Jeff Samuels — none of which is reproduced here. All twelve mantras agree in wording with these texts; the only change is the sandhi सर्वेश्वर एष in mantra 6, as all three comparison texts have it. Gauḍapāda’s Kārikā is not included. The English and Hindi introductions above are original writing by AdiVeda; they give context and summary, not a translation of the Sanskrit and not a traditional commentary.

O gods, may we hear with our ears what is good; O holy ones, may we see with our eyes what is good. Praising you with steady limbs and bodies, may we live out the span the gods have set. May Indra of great fame grant us well-being; may Pūṣan who knows all grant us well-being; may Tārkṣya, whose wheel is unharmed, grant us well-being; may Bṛhaspati grant us well-being. Oṃ — peace, peace, peace.

Oṃ — this syllable is all this. Its explanation is this: what has been, what is and what will be — all of it is simply Oṃ. And whatever else lies beyond the three times, that too is simply Oṃ.

All this is Brahman. This Self is Brahman. This Self has four quarters.

The first quarter is Vaiśvānara, the universal person: its field is the waking state; its awareness faces outward; it has seven limbs and nineteen mouths; and it enjoys the gross world.

The second quarter is Taijasa, the luminous one: its field is dream; its awareness faces inward; it has seven limbs and nineteen mouths; and it enjoys the subtle world of the mind.

Where the sleeper desires nothing and sees no dream, that is deep sleep. The third quarter is Prājña, the knower: its field is deep sleep; it has become one; it is a single mass of awareness; it is made of bliss and enjoys bliss; and awareness is its mouth.

Esha sarveshvara esha sarvajna esho'ntaryaamyesha yonih sarvasya prabhavaapyayau hi bhuutaanaam || 6 ||
This is the lord of all; this is the knower of all; this is the inner controller; this is the source of all — for it is the place from which beings arise and into which they dissolve.

Not facing inward, not facing outward, not facing both ways; not a mass of awareness; neither knowing nor unknowing; unseen, beyond dealings, ungraspable, without marks, unthinkable, indescribable; its essence is the certainty of the one Self; in it the world comes to rest; peaceful, auspicious, non-dual — this they consider the fourth (turīya). That is the Self; that is what is to be known.
so'yamātmādhyakṣaramoṅkāro'dhimātraṃ pādā mātrā mātrāśca pādā
akāra ukāro makāra iti || 8 ||
So'yamaatmaadhyaksharamonkaaro'dhimaatram paadaa maatraa maatraashcha paadaa akaara ukaaro makaara iti || 8 ||
This same Self, seen as a syllable, is Oṃ; seen as sounds, it is divided into measures (mātrās). The quarters are the measures and the measures are the quarters: the sound A, the sound U and the sound M.

Jaagaritasthaano vaishvaanaro'kaarah prathamaa maatraa''pteraadimattvaad vaa''pnoti ha vai sarvaan kaamaanaadishcha bhavati ya evam veda || 9 ||
Vaiśvānara, whose field is waking, is the sound A, the first measure — because A pervades everything and because it comes first. One who knows this obtains all desires and becomes first.

Svapnasthaanastaijasa ukaaro dvitiiyaa maatrotkarshaat ubhayatvaadvotkarshati ha vai jnaanasantatim samaanashcha bhavati naasyaabrahmavitkule bhavati ya evam veda || 10 ||
Taijasa, whose field is dream, is the sound U, the second measure — because it is higher, and because it stands between the other two. One who knows this raises the line of knowledge, becomes the same to all, and in his family no one is born who does not know Brahman.
suṣuptasthānaḥ prājño makārastṛtīyā mātrā miterapītervā

Sushuptasthaanah praajno makaarastritiiyaa maatraa miterapiitervaa minoti ha vaa idam sarvamapiitishcha bhavati ya evam veda || 11 ||
Prājña, whose field is deep sleep, is the sound M, the third measure — because it is the measure of all, and because all merges into it. One who knows this measures all this and becomes the place where all merges.
amātraścaturtho'vyavahāryaḥ prapañcopaśamaḥ śivo'dvaita
evamoṅkāra ātmaiva saṃviśatyātmanā''tmānaṃ ya evaṃ veda || 12 ||
Amaatrashchaturtho'vyavahaaryah prapanchopashamah shivo'dvaita evamonkaara aatmaiva samvishatyaatmanaa''tmaanam ya evam veda || 12 ||
The fourth is without measure — beyond dealings, the world at rest in it, auspicious, non-dual. Thus Oṃ is the Self itself. One who knows this enters the Self by the Self.
