Pitru (the Ancestors)

Pitru Stotram

Garuḍa Mahāpurāṇa, Ācāra-kāṇḍa ch. 89 (spoken by the sage Ruci)

The sage Ruci’s ten-verse salutation to the Pitṛs — the luminous, formless Fathers who guide gods, seers and worlds — recited during Pitru Paksha and śrāddha rites to win the ancestors’ grace and blessings.

Ruci said

arcitānām-amūrtānāṃ pitṝṇāṃ dīpta-tejasām | namasyāmi sadā teṣāṃ dhyānināṃ divya-cakṣuṣām ||1||

Architaanaam-amoortaanaam pitreenaam deepta-tejasaam, namasyaami sadaa teshaam dhyaaninaam divya-chakshushaam.

I bow ever to the Fathers — worshipped yet formless, blazing with light, absorbed in meditation, of divine sight.

indrādīnāṃ ca netāro dakṣa-mārīcayos-tathā | saptarṣīṇāṃ tathānyeṣāṃ tān namasyāmi kāmadān ||2||

Indraadeenaam cha netaaro daksha-maareechayos-tathaa, saptarsheenaam tathaanyeshaam taan namasyaami kaamadaan.

Leaders of Indra and the gods, of Dakṣa and Mārīca, of the seven seers and the rest — I bow to those Fathers, granters of desires.

manvādīnāṃ ca netāraḥ sūryā-candramasos-tathā | tān namasyāmy-ahaṃ sarvān pitṝn apy-udadhāv-api ||3||

Manvaadeenaam cha netaarah sooryaa-chandramasos-tathaa, taan namasyaamy-aham sarvaan pitreen apy-udadhaav-api.

Leaders of Manu and his line, of sun and moon — to all those Fathers, even those in the ocean depths, I bow.

nakṣatrāṇāṃ grahāṇāṃ ca vāyv-agnyor-nabhasas-tathā | dyāvā-pṛthivyoś-ca tathā namasyāmi kṛtāñjaliḥ ||4||

Nakshatraanaam grahaanaam cha vaayv-agnyor-nabhasas-tathaa, dyaavaa-prithivyosh-cha tathaa namasyaami kritaanjalih.

To the Fathers of the stars and planets, of wind and fire and sky, of heaven and earth, I bow with folded hands.

prajāpateḥ kaśyapāya somāya varuṇāya ca | yogeśvarebhyaś-ca sadā namasyāmi kṛtāñjaliḥ ||5||

Prajaapateh kashyapaaya somaaya varunaaya cha, yogeshvarebhyash-cha sadaa namasyaami kritaanjalih.

To Kaśyapa the lord of creatures, to Soma, to Varuṇa, and to the masters of yoga I bow ever with folded hands.

namo gaṇebhyaḥ saptabhyas-tathā lokeṣu saptasu | svāyambhuve namasyāmi brahmaṇe yoga-cakṣuṣe ||6||

Namo ganebhyah saptabhyas-tathaa lokeshu saptasu, svaayambhuve namasyaami brahmane yoga-chakshushe.

Salutations to the seven hosts of Fathers in the seven worlds; I bow to self-born Brahmā, whose eye is yoga.

somādhārān pitṛ-gaṇān yoga-mūrti-dharāṃs-tathā | namasyāmi tathā somaṃ pitaraṃ jagatām-aham ||7||

Somaadhaaraan pitri-ganaan yoga-moorti-dharaams-tathaa, namasyaami tathaa somam pitaram jagataam-aham.

To the hosts of Fathers sustained by Soma, bearing forms of yoga, and to Soma himself, father of the worlds, I bow.

agni-rūpāṃs-tathaivānyān namasyāmi pitṝn aham | agni-soma-mayaṃ viśvaṃ yata etad aśeṣataḥ ||8||

Agni-roopaams-tathaivaanyaan namasyaami pitreen aham, agni-soma-mayam vishvam yata etad asheshatah.

I bow also to the Fathers in the form of fire and to all the rest — for this whole universe, entire, is woven of Agni and Soma.

ye ca tejasi ye caite soma-sūryāgni-mūrtayaḥ | jagat-svarūpiṇaś-caiva tathā brahma-svarūpiṇaḥ ||9||

Ye cha tejasi ye chaite soma-sooryaagni-moortayah, jagat-svaroopinash-chaiva tathaa brahma-svaroopinah.

Those who dwell in light, who are the very forms of moon, sun and fire, who are the world itself and Brahman itself —

tebhyo'khilebhyo yogibhyaḥ pitṛbhyo yata-mānasaḥ | namo namo namas-te'stu prasīdantu svadhā-bhujaḥ ||10||

Tebhyo-khilebhyo yogibhyah pitribhyo yata-maanasah, namo namo namas-te-stu praseedantu svadhaa-bhujah.

To all those Fathers, the yogins, with collected mind — salutations, salutations, salutations again; may the partakers of svadhā be gracious to me.
