Guru (The Teacher)

Guru Stotram

From the Guru Gita (Skanda Purana); traditional Vedantic

Six sacred slokas venerating the Guru as the visible form of the Supreme. Recited at the opening of teachings, ceremonies, and spiritual practice in the Vedantic tradition, these verses establish the Guru as the gateway to Brahman — the eternal, all-pervading consciousness.

gurur brahmā gurur viṣṇuḥ, gurur devo maheśvaraḥ | guruḥ sākṣāt param brahma, tasmai śrī gurave namaḥ ||

Gurur Brahma gurur Vishnu, gurur devo Maheshvarah | guruh sakshat param Brahma, tasmai shri gurave namah ||

The Guru is Brahma, the Guru is Vishnu, the Guru is the great Lord Shiva. The Guru is the supreme Brahman made visible — to that Guru I offer my salutation.

ajñānatimirāndhasya jñānāñjanaśalākayā | cakṣurunmīlitaṃ yena, tasmai śrī gurave namaḥ ||

Agyana timira andhasya gyananjana shalakaya | chakshurunmilitam yena, tasmai shri gurave namah ||

For one blinded by the darkness of ignorance, whose eyes are opened by the collyrium-brush of true knowledge — to that Guru I offer my salutation.

sthāvaraṃ jaṅgamaṃ caiva tathā caiva carācaram | tat padaṃ darśitaṃ yena, tasmai śrī gurave namaḥ ||

Sthavaram jangamam chaiva tatha chaiva characharam | tat padam darshitam yena, tasmai shri gurave namah ||

The unmoving and the moving, the animate and the inanimate — one who reveals the Supreme in all of this — to that Guru I offer my salutation.

cinmayaṃ vyāpi yat sarvaṃ trailokyaṃ sacarācaram | tat padaṃ darśitaṃ yena, tasmai śrī gurave namaḥ ||

Chinmayam vyapi yat sarvam trailokyam sacharacharam | tat padam darshitam yena, tasmai shri gurave namah ||

All of the three worlds, with their moving and unmoving, is pervaded by pure consciousness — one who reveals this truth — to that Guru I offer my salutation.

sarvaśrutiśiroratnavirājitapadāmbujam | vedāntāmbujasūryāya, tasmai śrī gurave namaḥ ||

Sarva shruti shiro ratna virajita padambujam | Vedantambuja suryaya, tasmai shri gurave namah ||

Whose lotus feet are adorned by the crown-jewels of all the Vedas and scriptures, who is the sun that makes the lotus of Vedanta bloom — to that Guru I offer my salutation.

dhyānamūlaṃ gurormūrtiḥ, pūjāmūlaṃ guroḥ padam | mantramūlaṃ gurorvākyaṃ, mokṣamūlaṃ guroḥ kṛpā ||

Dhyana mulam gurormurtihi, puja mulam guroh padam | mantra mulam guror vakyam, moksha mulam guroh kripa ||

The Guru's form is the very root of meditation; the Guru's feet are the root of worship; the Guru's word is the root of all mantra; the Guru's grace is the root of liberation.
