Viṣṇu-nāmāṣṭakam

Traditional nāma-stotra (associated with the Vāmana Purāṇa tradition); author unknown

A short nāmāṣṭaka invoking eight names of the Lord — Acyuta, Keśava, Viṣṇu, Hari, Satya, Janārdana, Haṃsa and Nārāyaṇa — recited at the three sandhyās for relief from poverty, enemies and bad dreams, and for firm devotion and wisdom.

acyutaṃ keśavaṃ viṣṇuṃ hariṃ satyaṃ janārdanam | haṃsaṃ nārāyaṇaṃ caivam etan nāmāṣṭakaṃ paṭhet ||1||

achyutam keshavam vishnum harim satyam janardanam | hamsam narayanam chaivam etan namashtakam pathet ||1||

Acyuta, Keśava, Viṣṇu, Hari, Satya, Janārdana, Haṃsa and Nārāyaṇa — let one recite this octet of the Lord’s names.

trisandhyaṃ yaḥ paṭhen nityaṃ dāridryaṃ tasya naśyati | śatru-sainyaṃ kṣayaṃ yāti duḥsvapnaḥ sukhado bhavet ||2||

trisandhyam yah pathen nityam daridryam tasya nashyati | shatru-sainyam kshayam yati duhsvapnah sukhado bhavet ||2||

Whoever recites it daily at the three junctions of the day — his poverty perishes, hostile armies waste away, and even an ill dream turns auspicious.

gaṅgāyāṃ maraṇaṃ caiva dṛḍhā bhaktis tu keśave | brahma-vidyā-prabodhaś ca tasmān nityaṃ paṭhen naraḥ ||3||

gangayam maranam chaiva dridha bhaktis tu keshave | brahma-vidya-prabodhash cha tasman nityam pathen narah ||3||

It bestows death by the Gaṅgā, firm devotion to Keśava, and the awakening of brahma-vidyā; therefore let one recite it every day.

Colophon

iti śrī-viṣṇu-nāmāṣṭakaṃ sampūrṇam ||

iti shri-vishnu-namashtakam sampurnam ||

Thus the Śrī Viṣṇu-nāmāṣṭakam is complete.
