Eight verses of elegant praise for Lord Krishna composed by Adi Shankaracharya. Each verse contrasts Krishna's supreme philosophical nature with his tender, playful human form: destroyer of sins yet delight of Nanda, lifter of Govardhana yet wearer of peacock feathers, crafter of designs on Parvati's bosom yet helmsman across the ocean of existence. The ashtakam is musically structured and is traditionally sung, not merely recited.

Mangalacharana — Invocation

नित्यानन्दैकरसं सच्चिन्मात्रं स्वयञ्ज्योतिः ।
पुरुषोत्तममजमीशं वन्दे श्रीयादवाधीशम् ॥

भजे व्रजैकमण्डनं समस्तपापखण्डनं
स्वभक्तचित्तरञ्जनं सदैव नन्दनन्दनम् ।

bhaje vraja-ika-maṇḍanaṃ samasta-pāpa-khaṇḍanaṃ |

I worship and bow to the clever Krishna — sole ornament of Vraja, destroyer of all sins, delight of his devotees' hearts, eternal joy of Nanda; whose head is crowned with peacock feather clusters, who holds a sweet-sounding flute, and who is an ocean of the art of love.

मनोजगर्वमोचनं विशाललोललोचनं
विधूतगोपशोचनं नमामि पद्मलोचनम् ।
करारविन्दभूधरं स्मितावलोकसुन्दरं
महेन्द्रमानदारणं नमामि कृष्णवारणम् ॥ २॥

manoja-garva-mocanaṃ viśāla-lola-locanaṃ |
vidhūta-gopa-śocanaṃ namāmi padma-locanam |
karā-ravinda-bhūdharaṃ smitāvaloka-sundaraṃ |
mahendra-māna-dāraṇaṃ namāmi kṛṣṇa-vāraṇam ||

जो कामदेव का गर्व छुड़ा देनेवाले हैं, विशाल चंचल नेत्रोंवाले हैं, गोपों का शोक दूर करनेवाले हैं — उन कमलनयन को मैं नमस्कार करता हूँ; जिनके करकमल पर गोवर्धन पर्वत है, जो मुस्कान-भरी चितवन से सुन्दर हैं और इन्द्र का मान विदीर्ण करनेवाले हैं — उन गजराज-से (श्रेष्ठ) कृष्ण को मैं नमस्कार करता हूँ।

I bow to lotus-eyed Krishna who freed Kama from his pride, whose eyes are beautiful and wide, who removes the gopas' sorrows; who lifted the Govardhana mountain with his lotus hands, whose smile and glance are supremely beautiful, who crushed Indra's arrogance — bow to Krishna, great as an elephant.

कदम्बसूनकुण्डलं सुचारुगण्डमण्डलं
व्रजाङ्गनैकवल्लभं नमामि कृष्णदुर्लभम् ।
यशोदया समोदया सगोपया सनन्दया
युतं सुखैकदायकं नमामि गोपनायकम् ॥ ३॥

kadamba-sūna-kuṇḍalaṃ su-cāru-gaṇḍa-maṇḍalaṃ |
vraja-aṅganā-ika-vallabhaṃ namāmi kṛṣṇa-durlabham |
yaśodayā samodayā sa-gopayā sa-nandayā |
yutaṃ sukha-ika-dāyakaṃ namāmi gopa-nāyakam ||

I bow to Krishna — who wears kadamba-blossom earrings, whose cheeks are exquisitely beautiful, who is the sole darling of the women of Vraja, and who is difficult to reach by any means other than devotion; who is with joyful Yashoda, the gopas, and Nanda — sole giver of happiness, lord of the cowherds.

सदैव पादपङ्कजं मदीय मानसे निजं
दधानमुक्तमालकं नमामि नन्दबालकम् ।
समस्तदोषशोषणं समस्तलोकपोषणं
समस्तगोपमानसं नमामि नन्दलालसम् ॥ ४॥

sadaiva pāda-paṅkajaṃ madīya mānase nijaṃ |
dadhāna-mukta-mālakaṃ namāmi nanda-bālakam |
samasta-doṣa-śoṣaṇaṃ samasta-loka-poṣaṇaṃ |

I bow to Nanda's son — who has placed his lotus feet within my mind, whose curls of hair are beautiful; I adore Krishna who removes all defects, nourishes all the worlds, and who is longed for by all the gopas and Nanda.

भुवो भरावतारकं भवाब्धिकर्णधारकं
यशोमतीकिशोरकं नमामि चित्तचोरकम् ।
दृगन्तकान्तभङ्गिनं सदा सदालिसङ्गिनं
दिने दिने नवं नवं नमामि नन्दसम्भवम् ॥ ५॥

bhuvo bharā-vatārakaṃ bhavābdhi-karṇa-dhārakaṃ |
yaśomatī-kiśorakaṃ namāmi citta-corakam |
dṛganta-kānta-bhaṅginaṃ sadā sadāli-saṅginaṃ |
dine dine navaṃ navaṃ namāmi nanda-sambhavam ||

Bhuvo bhara-vataram bhavabdhi-karna-dharam, yashomati-kishorakam namami chitta-chorakam; Driganta-kanta-bhangim sada sadali-sangim, dine dine navim navim namami nanda-sambhavam

जो पृथ्वी का भार उतारनेवाले और भवसागर के कर्णधार हैं — उन यशोदा के किशोर, चित्त के चोर को मैं नमस्कार करता हूँ; जिनके कटाक्षों की भंगिमा अति मनोहर है, जो सदा सखियों-सखाओं के संगी हैं और दिन-प्रतिदिन नये-नये लगते हैं — उन नन्द-सम्भव को मैं नमस्कार करता हूँ।

I bow to Nanda's son the heart-stealer — who relieves the earth's burden, who is the helmsman across the ocean of existence, Yasoda's youthful boy; whose sidelong glances are captivating, who is always with saints, and who is ever new each day.

गुणाकरं सुखाकरं कृपाकरं कृपापरं
सुरद्विषन्निकन्दनं नमामि गोपनन्दनम् ।
नवीनगोपनागरं नवीनकेलिलम्पटं
नमामि मेघसुन्दरं तडित्प्रभालसत्पटम् ॥ ६॥

guṇā-karaṃ sukhā-karaṃ kṛpā-karaṃ kṛpā-paraṃ |
sura-dviṣan-nikandanaṃ namāmi gopa-nandanam |
navīna-gopa-nāgaraṃ navīna-keli-lampaṭaṃ |

Krishna is the repository of all virtues, all happiness, all grace — supreme in compassion, destroyer of the gods' enemies. I bow to the delight of the gopas, the mischievous cowherd forever new in his playful exploits, as beautiful as a dark raincloud, wearing a golden garment gleaming like lightning.

समस्तगोपनन्दनं हृदम्बुजैकमोदनं
नमामि कुञ्जमध्यगं प्रसन्नभानुशोभनम् ।
निकामकामदायकं दृगन्तचारुसायकं
रसालवेणुगायकं नमामि कुञ्जनायकम् ॥ ७॥

samasta-gopa-nandanaṃ hṛd-ambuja-ika-modanaṃ |
namāmi kuñja-madhyagaṃ prasanna-bhānu-śobhanam |
nikāma-kāma-dāyakaṃ dṛganta-cāru-sāyakaṃ |

I bow to Krishna who is the joy of all the gopas, who makes the heart's lotus blossom with delight, who dwells in the heart of the grove, as resplendent as a clear sun; lord of the grove who fulfills every desire, whose glances are beautiful arrows, and who plays melodious tunes on the flute.

विदग्धगोपिकामनोमनोज्ञतल्पशायिनं
नमामि कुञ्जकानने प्रवृद्धवह्निपायिनम् ।
किशोरकान्तिरञ्जितं दृगञ्जनं सुशोभितं
गजेन्द्रमोक्षकारिणं नमामि श्रीविहारिणम् ॥ ८॥

vidagdha-gopikā-mano-manojña-talpa-śāyinaṃ |
namāmi kuñja-kānane pravṛddha-vahni-pāyinam |
kiśora-kānti-rañjitaṃ dṛg-añjanaṃ su-śobhitaṃ |
gajendra-mokṣa-kāriṇaṃ namāmi śrī-vihāriṇam ||

Vidagdha-gopika-mano-manojna-talpa-shayinam, namami kunja-kanane pravriddhavahni-payinam; Kishora-kanti-ranjitam drig-anjanam su-shobhitam, gajendra-moksha-karinam namami shri-viharinam

जो चतुर गोपिकाओं के मन-रूपी मनोहर शय्या पर शयन करनेवाले हैं, और कुंज-वन में भड़की प्रचण्ड (दावानल की) अग्नि को पी जानेवाले हैं — उन्हें मैं नमस्कार करता हूँ; जो किशोर-कान्ति से रंजित और नेत्रों के अंजन से सुशोभित हैं, गजेन्द्र का मोक्ष करनेवाले हैं — उन श्री के संग विहार करनेवाले को मैं नमस्कार करता हूँ।

I bow to Krishna who rests on the bed of the wise gopīs' minds; who drank the spreading forest-fire to protect the cowherd community; whose eyes glow with youthful charm and dark kohl; who freed Gajendra the elephant — bow to him who sports with Shri (Lakshmi).

Phala-Shruti — Fruit of Recitation

यदा तदा यथा तथा तथैव कृष्णसत्कथा
मया सदैव गीयतां तथा कृपा विधीयताम् ।
प्रमाणिकाष्टकद्वयं जपत्यधीत्य यः पुमान
भवेत्स नन्दनन्दने भवे भवे सुभक्तिमान ॥ ९॥

yadā tadā yathā tathā tathaiva kṛṣṇa-sat-kathā |
mayā sadaiva gīyatāṃ tathā kṛpā vidhīyatām |
pramāṇika-aṣṭaka-dvayaṃ japatyaadyaiva yaḥ pumān |

जब भी, जहाँ भी, जैसे भी हो — कृष्ण की उत्तम कथा मुझसे सदा गायी जाती रहे, ऐसी ही कृपा कीजिए। जो पुरुष प्रमाणिका छन्द के इस अष्टक-द्वय का अध्ययन कर जप करता है, वह जन्म-जन्म में नन्दनन्दन का सुदृढ़ भक्त होता है।
