Nag Stotram

Traditional (sarpa-namaskāra litany; the Āstīka reference recalls the Mahābhārata sarpa-satra)

Salutations to the serpents of every realm — of Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Rudra, of heaven and the netherworld, of mountain, village and burrow — seeking their lasting goodwill. Recited on Nāga Pañcamī and for protection from sarpa-doṣa and snake-fear.

ब्रह्मलोके च ये सर्पाः शेषनागाः पुरोगमाः । नमोऽस्तु तेभ्यः सुप्रीताः प्रसन्नाः सन्तु मे सदा ॥ १॥

विष्णुलोके च ये सर्पाः वासुकिप्रमुखाश्च ये । नमोऽस्तु तेभ्यः सुप्रीताः प्रसन्नाः सन्तु मे सदा ॥ २॥

viṣṇu-loke ca ye sarpāḥ vāsuki-pramukhāś-ca ye | namo'stu tebhyaḥ suprītāḥ prasannāḥ santu me sadā ||2||

विष्णुलोक में जो सर्प हैं, जिनमें वासुकि प्रमुख हैं — उन्हें नमस्कार; वे मुझ पर सदा सुप्रसन्न और प्रसन्न रहें।

The serpents in Viṣṇu's realm, foremost among them Vāsuki — salutations to them; may they ever be well-pleased and gracious to me.

रुद्रलोके च ये सर्पाः तक्षकः प्रमुखास्तथा । नमोऽस्तु तेभ्यः सुप्रीताः प्रसन्नाः सन्तु मे सदा ॥ ३॥

रुद्रलोक में जो सर्प हैं, जिनमें तक्षक प्रमुख हैं — उन्हें नमस्कार; वे मुझ पर सदा सुप्रसन्न और प्रसन्न रहें।

The serpents in Rudra's realm, with Takṣaka at their head — salutations to them; may they ever be well-pleased and gracious to me.

खाण्डवस्य तथा दाहे स्वर्गं च ये च समाश्रिताः । नमोऽस्तु तेभ्यः सुप्रीताः प्रसन्नाः सन्तु मे सदा ॥ ४॥

khāṇḍavasya tathā dāhe svargaṃ ca ye ca samāśritāḥ | namo'stu tebhyaḥ suprītāḥ prasannāḥ santu me sadā ||4||

Khaandavasya tathaa daahe svargam cha ye cha samaashritaah, namo'stu tebhyah supreetaah prasannaah santu me sadaa.

खाण्डव वन के दाह के समय जो (बचकर) स्वर्ग में जा बसे — उन्हें नमस्कार; वे मुझ पर सदा सुप्रसन्न और प्रसन्न रहें।

Those who, at the burning of the Khāṇḍava forest, escaped and took shelter in heaven — salutations to them; may they ever be well-pleased and gracious to me.

सर्पसत्रे च ये सर्पाः आस्तीकेनाभिरक्षिताः । नमोऽस्तु तेभ्यः सुप्रीताः प्रसन्नाः सन्तु मे सदा ॥ ५॥

sarpa-satre ca ye sarpāḥ āstīkenābhirakṣitāḥ | namo'stu tebhyaḥ suprītāḥ prasannāḥ santu me sadā ||5||

Sarpa-satre cha ye sarpaah Aasteekenaabhirakshitaah, namo'stu tebhyah supreetaah prasannaah santu me sadaa.

(जनमेजय के) सर्प-यज्ञ में जो सर्प आस्तीक मुनि द्वारा बचाये गये — उन्हें नमस्कार; वे मुझ पर सदा सुप्रसन्न और प्रसन्न रहें।

The serpents saved by the sage Āstīka at (Janamejaya's) snake-sacrifice — salutations to them; may they ever be well-pleased and gracious to me.

प्रलये चैव ये सर्पाः कार्कोटप्रमुखाश्च ये । नमोऽस्तु तेभ्यः सुप्रीताः प्रसन्नाः सन्तु मे सदा ॥ ६॥

pralaye caiva ye sarpāḥ kārkoṭa-pramukhāś-ca ye | namo'stu tebhyaḥ suprītāḥ prasannāḥ santu me sadā ||6||

Pralaye chaiva ye sarpaah Kaarkota-pramukhaash cha ye, namo'stu tebhyah supreetaah prasannaah santu me sadaa.

प्रलय में भी जो सर्प रहते हैं, जिनमें कर्कोटक प्रमुख हैं — उन्हें नमस्कार; वे मुझ पर सदा सुप्रसन्न और प्रसन्न रहें।

The serpents who endure even the dissolution, led by Karkoṭaka — salutations to them; may they ever be well-pleased and gracious to me.

धर्मलोके च ये सर्पाः वैतरण्यां समाश्रिताः । नमोऽस्तु तेभ्यः सुप्रीताः प्रसन्नाः सन्तु मे सदा ॥ ७॥

धर्मराज (यम) के लोक में जो सर्प वैतरणी नदी के आश्रय में रहते हैं — उन्हें नमस्कार; वे मुझ पर सदा सुप्रसन्न और प्रसन्न रहें।

The serpents in Dharma's realm who dwell by the Vaitaraṇī river — salutations to them; may they ever be well-pleased and gracious to me.

ये सर्पाः पर्वतेषु धारिसन्धिषु संस्थिताः । नमोऽस्तु तेभ्यः सुप्रीताः प्रसन्नाः सन्तु मे सदा ॥ ८॥

Ye sarpaah parvateshu dhaari-sandhishu samsthitaah, namo'stu tebhyah supreetaah prasannaah santu me sadaa.

जो सर्प पर्वतों की कन्दराओं और दर्रों में स्थित हैं — उन्हें नमस्कार; वे मुझ पर सदा सुप्रसन्न और प्रसन्न रहें।

The serpents lodged in the clefts and crevices of mountains — salutations to them; may they ever be well-pleased and gracious to me.

ग्रामे वा यदि वारण्ये ये सर्पाः प्रचरन्ति च । नमोऽस्तु तेभ्यः सुप्रीताः प्रसन्नाः सन्तु मे सदा ॥ ९॥

गाँव में अथवा वन में जो सर्प विचरते हैं — उन्हें नमस्कार; वे मुझ पर सदा सुप्रसन्न और प्रसन्न रहें।

The serpents that roam in village or in forest — salutations to them; may they ever be well-pleased and gracious to me.

पृथिव्यां चैव ये सर्पाः ये सर्पा बिलसंस्थिताः । नमोऽस्तु तेभ्यः सुप्रीताः प्रसन्नाः सन्तु मे सदा ॥ १०॥

pṛthivyāṃ caiva ye sarpāḥ ye sarpā bila-saṃsthitāḥ | namo'stu tebhyaḥ suprītāḥ prasannāḥ santu me sadā ||10||

Prithivyaam chaiva ye sarpaah ye sarpaa bila-samsthitaah, namo'stu tebhyah supreetaah prasannaah santu me sadaa.

पृथ्वी पर जो सर्प हैं और जो बिलों में रहते हैं — उन्हें नमस्कार; वे मुझ पर सदा सुप्रसन्न और प्रसन्न रहें।

The serpents upon the earth and those that dwell in burrows — salutations to them; may they ever be well-pleased and gracious to me.

रसातले च ये सर्पाः अनन्तादिमहाबलाः । नमोऽस्तु तेभ्यः सुप्रीताः प्रसन्नाः सन्तु मे सदा ॥ ११॥

rasātale ca ye sarpāḥ anantādi-mahā-balāḥ | namo'stu tebhyaḥ suprītāḥ prasannāḥ santu me sadā ||11||

Rasaatale cha ye sarpaah Anantaadi-mahaa-balaah, namo'stu tebhyah supreetaah prasannaah santu me sadaa.

रसातल में जो अनन्त आदि महाबली सर्प हैं — उन्हें नमस्कार; वे मुझ पर सदा सुप्रसन्न और प्रसन्न रहें।

The mighty serpents of the netherworld, Ananta and the rest — salutations to them; may they ever be well-pleased and gracious to me.
