I worship here Mahalakshmi seated on the lotus, slayer of the buffalo-demon, radiant as coral — bearing in her hands the rosary, axe, mace, arrow, thunderbolt, lotus, bow, water-pot, staff, spear, sword, shield, conch, bell, wine-cup, trident, noose and the discus Sudarshana.

2.1

ॐ hrīṁ ṛṣiruvāca ॥ 2.1॥

ॐ hrīm rishiruvācha ॥ 2.1॥

Om Hrim. The seer said:

2.2

devāsuramabhūdyuddhaṁ pūrṇamabdaśataṁ purā ।
mahiṣe'surāṇāmadhipe devānāṁ ca purandare ॥ 2.2॥

devāsuramabhūdyuddham pūrnamabdashatam purā ।
mahishe'surānāmadhipe devānām cha purandare ॥ 2.2॥

Of old, when Mahisha was lord of the asuras and Purandara (Indra) of the gods, there was war between gods and demons for a full hundred years.

2.3

tatrāsurairmahāvīryairdevasainyaṁ parājitam ।
jitvā ca sakalān devānindro'bhūnmahiṣāsuraḥ ॥ 2.3॥

tatrāsurairmahāvīryairdevasainyam parājitam ।
jitvā cha sakalān devānindro'bhūnmahishāsurah ॥ 2.3॥

In it the army of the gods was beaten by the asuras of great valour; and having conquered all the gods, Mahishasura made himself Indra.

2.4

tataḥ parājitā devāḥ padmayoniṁ prajāpatim ।
puraskṛtya gatāstatra yatreśagaruḍadhvajau ॥ 2.4॥

tatah parājitā devāh padmayonim prajāpatim ।
puraskritya gatāstatra yatreshagarudadhvajau ॥ 2.4॥

Then the defeated gods, placing the lotus-born Prajapati at their head, went where Isha (Shiva) and the Garuda-bannered (Vishnu) were.

2.5

yathāvṛttaṁ tayostadvanmahiṣāsuraceṣṭitam ।
tridaśāḥ kathayāmāsurdevābhibhavavistaram ॥ 2.5॥

yathāvrittam tayostadvanmahishāsuracheshtitam ।
tridashāh kathayāmāsurdevābhibhavavistaram ॥ 2.5॥

The gods recounted to those two, just as it had happened, the doings of Mahishasura and the full tale of the gods' humiliation:

2.6

sūryendrāgnyanilendūnāṁ yamasya varuṇasya ca ।
anyeṣāṁ cādhikārānsa svayamevādhitiṣṭhati ॥ 2.6॥

sūryendrāgnyanilendūnām yamasya varunasya cha ।
anyeshām chādhikārānsa svayamevādhitishthati ॥ 2.6॥

'The offices of Surya, Indra, Agni, Vayu and Chandra, of Yama and of Varuna and the rest, he occupies himself.

2.7

svargānnirākṛtāḥ sarve tena devagaṇā bhuvi ।
vicaranti yathā martyā mahiṣeṇa durātmanā ॥ 2.7॥

svargānnirākritāh sarve tena devaganā bhuvi ।
vicharanti yathā martyā mahishena durātmanā ॥ 2.7॥

Cast out of heaven by that evil-souled Mahisha, the hosts of gods all wander the earth like mortals.

2.8

etadvaḥ kathitaṁ sarvamamarāriviceṣṭitam ।
śaraṇaṁ vaḥ prapannāḥ smo vadhastasya vicintyatām ॥ 2.8॥

etadvah kathitam sarvamamarārivicheshtitam ।
sharanam vah prapannāh smo vadhastasya vichintyatām ॥ 2.8॥

All these doings of the foe of the immortals we have told you; we have come to you for refuge — let his slaying be devised.'

2.9

itthaṁ niśamya devānāṁ vacāṁsi madhusūdanaḥ ।
cakāra kopaṁ śambhuśca bhrukuṭīkuṭilānanau ॥ 2.9॥

ittham nishamya devānām vachāmsi madhusūdanah ।
chakāra kopam shambhushcha bhrukutīkutilānanau ॥ 2.9॥

Hearing thus the words of the gods, Madhusudana grew wrathful, and Shambhu too — their faces knit with frowning brows.

2.10

tato'tikopapūrṇasya cakriṇo vadanāttataḥ ।
niścakrāma mahattejo brahmaṇaḥ śaṅkarasya ca ॥ 2.10॥

tato'tikopapūrnasya chakrino vadanāttatah ।
nishchakrāma mahattejo brahmanah shankarasya cha ॥ 2.10॥

Then from the face of the discus-bearer, filled with exceeding wrath, came forth a great radiance, and from Brahma's and Shankara's too;

2.11

anyeṣāṁ caiva devānāṁ śakrādīnāṁ śarīrataḥ ।
nirgataṁ sumahattejastaccaikyaṁ samagacchata ॥ 2.11॥

anyeshām chaiva devānām shakrādīnām sharīratah ।
nirgatam sumahattejastachchaikyam samagachchhata ॥ 2.11॥

and from the bodies of the other gods, Shakra and the rest, went forth a very great radiance — and it all became one.

2.12

atīva tejasaḥ kūṭaṁ jvalantamiva parvatam ।
dadṛśuste surāstatra jvālāvyāptadigantaram ॥ 2.12॥

atīva tejasah kūtam jvalantamiva parvatam ।
dadrishuste surāstatra jvālāvyāptadigantaram ॥ 2.12॥

There the gods beheld that surpassing mass of light, like a mountain ablaze, its flames filling the quarters of the sky.

2.13

atulaṁ tatra tattejaḥ sarvadevaśarīrajam ।
ekasthaṁ tadabhūnnārī vyāptalokatrayaṁ tviṣā ॥ 2.13॥

atulam tatra tattejah sarvadevasharīrajam ।
ekastham tadabhūnnārī vyāptalokatrayam tvishā ॥ 2.13॥

That peerless radiance, born of the bodies of all the gods, gathered into one and became a Woman, pervading the three worlds with her splendour.

2.14

yadabhūcchāmbhavaṁ tejastenājāyata tanmukham ।

yadabhūchchhāmbhavam tejastenājāyata tanmukham ।
yāmyena chābhavan keshā bāhavo vishnutejasā ॥ 2.14॥

From the radiance of Shambhu arose her face; from Yama's came her hair, from Vishnu's radiance her arms;

2.15

saumyena stanayoryugmam madhyam chaindrena chābhavat ।
vārunena cha janghorū nitambastejasā bhuvah ॥ 2.15॥

from the Moon's the pair of her breasts, from Indra's her waist; from Varuna's her thighs and legs, and from Earth's radiance her hips;

2.16

brahmaṇastejasā pādau tadaṅgulyo'rkatejasā ।
vasūnāṁ ca karāṅgulyaḥ kaubereṇa ca nāsikā ॥ 2.16॥

brahmanastejasā pādau tadangulyo'rkatejasā ।
vasūnām cha karāngulyah kauberena cha nāsikā ॥ 2.16॥

nayanatritayaṁ jajñe tathā pāvakatejasā ॥ 2.17॥

tasyāstu dantāh sambhūtāh prājāpatyena tejasā ।
nayanatritayam jagye tathā pāvakatejasā ॥ 2.17॥

her teeth were formed of Prajapati's radiance, and her three eyes were born of Fire's;

2.18

anyeṣāṁ caiva devānāṁ sambhavastejasāṁ śivā ॥ 2.18॥

bhruvau cha sandhyayostejah shravanāvanilasya cha ।
anyeshām chaiva devānām sambhavastejasām shivā ॥ 2.18॥

her brows were the radiance of the two twilights, her ears of the Wind's; and of the radiances of the other gods as well was the auspicious one born.

2.19

tām vilokya mudam prāpuramarā mahishārditāh ।
tato devā dadustasyai svāni svānyāyudhāni cha ॥ 2.19॥

Then, beholding her, sprung from the massed radiance of all the gods, the immortals tormented by Mahisha rejoiced; and the gods gave her each his own weapons.

2.20

2.31

nāgahāram dadau tasyai dhatte yah prithivīmimām ।
anyairapi surairdevī bhūshanairāyudhaistathā ॥ 2.31॥

gave her a serpent-necklace adorned with great jewels. By the other gods too the Goddess was honoured with ornaments and weapons.

2.32

sammānitā nanādoccaiḥ sāṭṭahāsaṁ muhurmuhuḥ ।

sammānitā nanādochchaih sāttahāsam muhurmuhuh ।
tasyā nādena ghorena kritsnamāpūritam nabhah ॥ 2.32॥

Thus honoured, she roared aloud with peals of laughter again and again; by her terrible cry the whole sky was filled.

2.33

amāyatātimahatā pratishabdo mahānabhūt ।
chukshubhuh sakalā lokāh samudrāshcha chakampire ॥ 2.33॥

From that boundless, mighty cry a great echo arose; all the worlds shook, and the seas trembled.

2.34

chachāla vasudhā cheluh sakalāshcha mahīdharāh ।
jayeti devāshcha mudā tāmūchuh simhavāhinīm ॥ 2.34॥

The earth rocked, and all the mountains swayed; and the gods in their joy cried 'Victory!' to her who rides the lion.

2.35

drishtvā samastam sankshubdham trailokyamamarārayah ॥ 2.35॥

The sages, their forms bowed in devotion, hymned her. Seeing the whole three worlds in upheaval, the foes of the immortals

2.36

āh kimetaditi krodhādābhāshya mahishāsurah ॥ 2.36॥

rose up with all their armies harnessed, weapons aloft. 'Ah! What is this?' cried Mahishasura in fury,

2.37

abhyadhāvata tam shabdamasheshairasurairvritah ।
sa dadarsha tato devīm vyāptalokatrayām tvishā ॥ 2.37॥

and rushed toward that sound, ringed by all his asuras. Then he beheld the Goddess, pervading the three worlds with her radiance —

2.38

pādākrāntyā natabhuvam kirītollikhitāmbarām ।
kshobhitāsheshapātālām dhanurjyānihsvanena tām ॥ 2.38॥

चरणों के दबाव से पृथ्वी को झुकाती, किरीट से आकाश को खरोंचती (छूती), और धनुष की टंकार से समस्त पाताल को क्षुब्ध करती हुई;

bending the earth under the tread of her feet, grazing the sky with her crown, shaking the whole netherworld with the twang of her bowstring,

2.39

standing with her thousand arms filling the quarters on every side. Then battle was joined between that Goddess and the enemies of the gods,

2.40

fought; and Chamara, attended by his fourfold host, with others. The great asura called Udagra fought with sixty thousand chariots,

2.42

and Mahahanu battled with a thousand myriads; the great asura Asiloma with fifty millions,

gajavājisahasraughairanekaih parivāritah ॥ 2.43॥

and Bashkala fought in the fray with six hundred myriads. Ringed by many thousands of troops of elephants and horses,

2.44

and girt with a crore of chariots, (Parivarita) fought in that battle; and the one named Bidala, with five hundred myriads of chariots,

yuyudhe samyuge tatra rathānām parivāritah ।
anye cha tatrāyutasho rathanāgahayairvritāh ॥ 2.45॥

fought there in the conflict. And others there, surrounded by myriads of chariots, elephants and horses,

2.46

yuyudhuh samyuge devyā saha tatra mahāsurāh ।
kotikotisahasraistu rathānām dantinām tathā ॥ 2.46॥

battled with the Goddess in that fight. With thousands of crores upon crores of chariots and elephants

tomarairbhindipālaishcha shaktibhirmusalaistathā ॥ 2.47॥

and horses was Mahishasura himself ringed in that battle. With lances and iron clubs, with spears and pestles,

2.48

yuyudhuh samyuge devyā khadgaih parashupattishaih ।
kechichcha chikshipuh shaktīh kechit pāshāmstathāpare ॥ 2.48॥

with swords, axes and sharp-edged pattishas they fought the Goddess in the fray. Some hurled spears at her, and some nooses;

2.49

devīm khadgaprahāraistu te tām hantum prachakramuh ।
sāpi devī tatastāni shastrānyastrāni chandikā ॥ 2.49॥

and they set about to slay the Goddess with sword-strokes. But she, the Goddess Chandika, those weapons and missiles

līlayaiva prachichchheda nijashastrāstravarshinī ।
anāyastānanā devī stūyamānā surarshibhih ॥ 2.50॥

cut down as in mere play, raining her own weapons and missiles. Her face unwearied, the Goddess — hymned by gods and seers —

2.51

mumochāsuradeheshu shastrānyastrāni cheshvarī ।
so'pi kruddho dhutasato devyā vāhanakesarī ॥ 2.51॥

loosed her weapons and missiles upon the bodies of the asuras. And the lion that bore the Goddess, enraged, shaking his mane,

2.52

chachārāsurasainyeshu vaneshviva hutāshanah ।
nihshvāsān mumuche yāmshcha yudhyamānā rane'mbikā ॥ 2.52॥

stalked through the demon armies like fire through forests. And the breaths that Ambika sighed forth as she fought in the fray

2.53

ta eva sadyah sambhūtā ganāh shatasahasrashah ।
yuyudhuste parashubhirbhindipālāsipattishaih ॥ 2.53॥

became at once her hosts by hundreds and thousands; they fought on with axes, javelins, swords and pattishas,

2.54

nāshayanto'suraganān devīshaktyupabrimhitāh ।
avādayanta patahān ganāh shankhāmstathāpare ॥ 2.54॥

destroying the asura hosts, swelled by the Goddess's power. Some of the hosts beat drums, others blew conches,

2.55

mridangāmshcha tathaivānye tasmin yuddhamahotsave ।
tato devī trishūlena gadayā shaktivrishtibhih ॥ 2.55॥

and others sounded tabors in that great festival of battle. Then the Goddess with her trident, her mace, with showers of spears

2.56

khadgādibhishcha shatasho nijaghāna mahāsurān ।
pātayāmāsa chaivānyān ghantāsvanavimohitān ॥ 2.56॥

and with sword and the rest, slew the great asuras by the hundred; and felled others besides, dazed by the clangour of her bell.

2.57

Binding other asuras with her noose, she dragged them along the ground. Some were cleft in two by keen sword-strokes; others,

crushed by the fall of her mace, lay strewn upon the earth; and some, struck hard by the pestle, vomited blood.

2.59

kechinnipatitā bhūmau bhinnāh shūlena vakshasi ।
nirantarāh sharaughena kritāh kechidranājire ॥ 2.59॥

कुछ, छाती में शूल से विदीर्ण होकर, भूमि पर गिर पड़े। कुछ रणभूमि में बाणों की झड़ी से निरन्तर (बिंधे हुए) कर दिये गये;

Some fell to the ground, their breasts split by the trident; some on the field of battle were made one mass of wounds by the torrent of arrows;

2.60

keshānchid bāhavashchhinnāshchhinnagrīvāstathāpare ॥ 2.60॥

(और वे) त्रिदश-पीड़क (असुर), बाज पक्षी का-सा (झपट्टा) अनुकरण करते हुए, प्राण छोड़ने लगे। किन्हीं की भुजाएँ कट गयीं, और दूसरे कटी ग्रीवाओं वाले (हो गये);

and those tormentors of the gods, swooping hawk-like, gave up their lives. Of some the arms were severed, others had their necks cut through;

the heads of others fell, others were torn through the middle; and other great asuras, their legs hewn off, dropped to the earth.

Some, cloven in two by the Goddess, were left with single arm, eye and foot; and others, though beheaded, fell and rose again.

Headless trunks, gripping the best of weapons, fought on with the Goddess; and others of them danced there in the battle, keeping time to the music.

kabandhāshchhinnashirasah khadgashaktyrishtipānayah ।
tishtha tishtheti bhāshanto devīmanye mahāsurāh ॥ 2.64॥

Trunks with severed heads, swords, spears and lances in hand, (rushed on); and other great asuras kept crying to the Goddess, 'Stand! Stand!'

2.65

pātitai rathanāgāśvairasuraiśca vasundharā ।
agamyā sābhavattatra yatrābhūt sa mahāraṇaḥ ॥ 2.65॥

pātitai rathanāgāshvairasuraishcha vasundharā ।
agamyā sābhavattatra yatrābhūt sa mahāranah ॥ 2.65॥

With fallen chariots, elephants, horses and asuras, the earth became impassable there where that great battle was fought.

2.66

śoṇitaughā mahānadyaḥ sadyastatra prasusruvuḥ ।
madhye cāsurasainyasya vāraṇāsuravājinām ॥ 2.66॥

shonitaughā mahānadyah sadyastatra prasusruvuh ।
madhye chāsurasainyasya vāranāsuravājinām ॥ 2.66॥

Great rivers of streaming blood — of elephants, asuras and horses — at once flowed forth there through the midst of the demon army.

2.67

kṣaṇena tanmahāsainyamasurāṇāṁ tathāmbikā ।
ninye kṣayaṁ yathā vahnistṛṇadārumahācayam ॥ 2.67॥

kshanena tanmahāsainyamasurānām tathāmbikā ।
ninye kshayam yathā vahnistrinadārumahāchayam ॥ 2.67॥

In a moment Ambika brought that vast army of the asuras to destruction, as fire consumes a great heap of grass and timber.

2.68

sa ca siṁho mahānādamutsṛjan dhutakesaraḥ ।
śarīrebhyo'marārīṇāmasūniva vicinvati ॥ 2.68॥

sa cha simho mahānādamutsrijan dhutakesarah ।
sharīrebhyo'marārīnāmasūniva vichinvati ॥ 2.68॥

And the lion, loosing his mighty roar, his mane shaking, prowled as if picking the very life-breaths out of the bodies of the immortals' foes.

2.69

devyā gaṇaiśca taistatra kṛtaṁ yuddhaṁ tathāsuraiḥ ।
yathaiṣāṁ tutuṣurdevāḥ puṣpavṛṣṭimuco divi ॥ 2.69॥

devyā ganaishcha taistatra kritam yuddham tathāsuraih ।
yathaishām tutushurdevāh pushpavrishtimucho divi ॥ 2.69॥

And such was the battle the Goddess's hosts waged there with the asuras that the gods in heaven, raining down flowers, were well pleased with them.

Thus, in the Markandeya Purana, in the account of the Savarnika Manvantara, in the Devi Mahatmya, ends the second chapter, named 'The Slaying of Mahishasura's Armies'. Uvacha 1, half-shlokas 68 — 69 in this chapter; thus 173 in all from the beginning.
