Durga Saptashati — Adhyāya 13 (Suratha-Vaishya Varapradana)

Markandeya Purana, Devi Mahatmya — Sage Markandeya (Sanskrit)

Adhyāya 13 of 13 (29 mantras: 6 uvāchas, 11 half-shlokas, 12 shlokas — completing the traditional 700): the frame-story closes — Suratha and Samadhi worship the Devi on the river-bank for three years; she grants the king an unshakeable kingdom and birth as the eighth Manu, Savarni, and the merchant the liberating knowledge that dissolves "I" and "mine". With the grand colophon, the Shri Saptashati Devi-Mahatmya is complete.

Dhyānam

ॐ bālārkamaṇḍalābhāsāṁ caturbāhuṁ trilocanām ।
pāśāṅkuśavarābhītirdhārayantīṁ śivāṁ bhaje ॥

ॐ bālārkamandalābhāsām chaturbāhum trilochanām ।
pāshānkushavarābhītirdhārayantīm shivām bhaje ॥

I worship the gracious Goddess — glowing like the orb of the newly-risen sun, four-armed, three-eyed, bearing the noose, the goad, and the gestures of boon and fearlessness.

13.1

ॐ ṛṣiruvāca ॥ 13.1॥

ॐ rishiruvācha ॥ 13.1॥

Om. The seer said:

13.2

etatte kathitaṁ bhūpa devīmāhātmyamuttamam ।

etatte kathitam bhūpa devīmāhātmyamuttamam ।
evam prabhāvā sā devī yayedam dhāryate jagat ॥ 13.2॥

'Thus, O king, has this supreme Mahatmya of the Goddess been told to you. Such is the majesty of her by whom this world is upheld.

13.3

vidyā tathaiva kriyate bhagavadviṣṇumāyayā ।

vidyā tathaiva kriyate bhagavadvishnumāyayā ।
tayā tvamesha vaishyashcha tathaivānye vivekinah ॥ 13.3॥

Knowledge likewise is wrought by her, the Maya of the blessed Vishnu. By her are you, and this vaishya, and other men of discernment likewise,

13.4

mohyante mohitāścaiva mohameṣyanti cāpare ।

mohyante mohitāshchaiva mohameshyanti chāpare ।
tāmupaihi mahārāja sharanam parameshvarīm ॥ 13.4॥

bewildered now, bewildered before; and others shall come to bewilderment hereafter. Go to her for refuge, O great king — to the supreme Empress.

13.5

ārādhitā saiva nṛṇāṁ bhogasvargāpavargadā ॥ 13.5॥

ārādhitā saiva nrinām bhogasvargāpavargadā ॥ 13.5॥

It is she who, worshipped, bestows on men enjoyment, heaven and final release.'

13.6

mārkandeya uvācha ॥ 13.6॥

Markandeya said:

13.7

iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvā surathaḥ sa narādhipaḥ ॥ 13.7॥

iti tasya vachah shrutvā surathah sa narādhipah ॥ 13.7॥

Hearing these words of his, Suratha, that lord of men,

13.8

praṇipatya mahābhāgaṁ tamṛṣiṁ saṁśitavratam ।
nirviṇṇo'timamatvena rājyāpaharaṇena ca ॥ 13.8॥

pranipatya mahābhāgam tamrishim samshitavratam ।
nirvinno'timamatvena rājyāpaharanena cha ॥ 13.8॥

bowed low to that blessed seer of rigorous vows; and, grown weary through excess of attachment and the seizure of his kingdom,

13.9

jagāma sadyastapase sa ca vaiśyo mahāmune ।
sandarśanārthamambāyā nadīpulinamāsthitaḥ ॥ 13.9॥

jagāma sadyastapase sa cha vaishyo mahāmune ।
sandarshanārthamambāyā nadīpulinamāsthitah ॥ 13.9॥

went forth at once to practise austerity; and the vaishya too, O great sage, to win sight of the Mother, took his seat upon a river's sandy bank.

13.10

sa ca vaiśyastapastepe devīsūktaṁ paraṁ japan ।
tau tasmin puline devyāḥ kṛtvā mūrtiṁ mahīmayīm ॥ 13.10॥

sa cha vaishyastapastepe devīsūktam param japan ।
tau tasmin puline devyāh kritvā mūrtim mahīmayīm ॥ 13.10॥

And the vaishya practised austerity, murmuring the supreme Devi-sukta. The two, fashioning an earthen image of the Goddess upon that bank,

13.11

arhaṇāṁ cakratustasyāḥ puṣpadhūpāgnitarpaṇaiḥ ।
nirāhārau yatātmānau tanmanaskau samāhitau ॥ 13.11॥

arhanām chakratustasyāh pushpadhūpāgnitarpanaih ।
nirāhārau yatātmānau tanmanaskau samāhitau ॥ 13.11॥

paid her worship with flowers, incense, fire and libations — fasting, self-restrained, their minds fixed on her, fully collected.

13.12

dadatustau baliṁ caiva nijagātrāsṛgukṣitam ।
evaṁ samārādhayatostribhirvarṣairyatātmanoḥ ॥ 13.12॥

dadatustau balim chaiva nijagātrāsrigukshitam ।
evam samārādhayatostribhirvarshairyatātmanoh ॥ 13.12॥

And they offered her bali besprinkled with blood from their own bodies. When the two, self-controlled, had worshipped thus for three years,

13.13

parituṣṭā jagaddhātrī pratyakṣaṁ prāha caṇḍikā ॥ 13.13॥

paritushtā jagaddhātrī pratyaksham prāha chandikā ॥ 13.13॥

Chandika, upholder of the world, well pleased, appeared before their eyes and spoke:

13.14

devyuvāca ॥ 13.14॥

devyuvācha ॥ 13.14॥

The Goddess said:

13.15

yatprārthyate tvayā bhūpa tvayā ca kulanandana ।
mattastatprāpyatāṁ sarvaṁ parituṣṭā dadāmite ॥ 13.15॥

yatprārthyate tvayā bhūpa tvayā cha kulanandana ।
mattastatprāpyatām sarvam paritushtā dadāmite ॥ 13.15॥

'What is sought by you, O king, and by you, O joy of your line — receive all that from me; well pleased, I grant it to you.'

13.16

mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ॥ 13.16॥

mārkandeya uvācha ॥ 13.16॥

Markandeya said:

13.17

tato vavre nṛpo rājyamavibhraṁśyanyajanmani ।
atraiva ca nijaṁ rājyaṁ hataśatrubalaṁ balāt ॥ 13.17॥

tato vavre nripo rājyamavibhramshyanyajanmani ।
atraiva cha nijam rājyam hatashatrubalam balāt ॥ 13.17॥

Then the king chose a kingdom imperishable even in another birth; and here, in this life, his own kingdom, the power of his foes broken by force.

13.18

so'pi vaiśyastato jñānaṁ vavre nirviṇṇamānasaḥ ।
mametyahamiti prājñaḥ saṅgavicyutikārakam ॥ 13.18॥

so'pi vaishyastato gyānam vavre nirvinnamānasah ।
mametyahamiti prāgyah sangavichyutikārakam ॥ 13.18॥

And the vaishya, wise, his heart grown weary of the world, then chose knowledge — such as loosens the clinging of 'mine' and of 'I'.

13.19

devyuvāca ॥ 13.19॥

devyuvācha ॥ 13.19॥

The Goddess said:

13.20

svalpairahobhirnṛpate svaṁ rājyaṁ prāpsyate bhavān ॥ 13.20॥

svalpairahobhirnripate svam rājyam prāpsyate bhavān ॥ 13.20॥

'हे नृपते! थोड़े ही दिनों में आप अपना राज्य प्राप्त कर लेंगे;

'In but a few days, O king, you shall regain your own kingdom;

13.21

hatvā ripūnaskhalitaṁ tava tatra bhaviṣyati ॥ 13.21॥

hatvā ripūnaskhalitam tava tatra bhavishyati ॥ 13.21॥

your foes slain, it shall there remain unshaken for you.

13.22

mṛtaśca bhūyaḥ samprāpya janma devādvivasvataḥ ॥ 13.22॥

mritashcha bhūyah samprāpya janma devādvivasvatah ॥ 13.22॥

And when you are dead, winning birth again from the god Vivasvan,

13.23

sāvarṇiko manurnāma bhavānbhuvi bhaviṣyati ॥ 13.23॥

sāvarniko manurnāma bhavānbhuvi bhavishyati ॥ 13.23॥

you shall be upon earth the Manu named Savarnika.

13.24

vaiśyavarya tvayā yaśca varo'smatto'bhivāñchitaḥ ॥ 13.24॥

vaishyavarya tvayā yashcha varo'smatto'bhivānchhitah ॥ 13.24॥

And, O best of vaishyas, the boon that you have desired of us —

13.25

taṁ prayacchāmi saṁsiddhyai tava jñānaṁ bhaviṣyati ॥ 13.25॥

tam prayachchhāmi samsiddhyai tava gyānam bhavishyati ॥ 13.25॥

that I grant: knowledge shall be yours, unto your full perfection.'

13.26

mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ॥ 13.26॥

mārkandeya uvācha ॥ 13.26॥

Markandeya said:

13.27

iti dattvā tayordevī yathābhilaṣitaṁ varam ॥ 13.27॥

iti dattvā tayordevī yathābhilashitam varam ॥ 13.27॥

Having thus given to those two the boons each desired, the Goddess,

13.28

babhūvāntarhitā sadyo bhaktyā tābhyāmabhiṣṭutā ।
evaṁ devyā varaṁ labdhvā surathaḥ kṣatriyarṣabhaḥ ॥ 13.28॥

babhūvāntarhitā sadyo bhaktyā tābhyāmabhishtutā ।
evam devyā varam labdhvā surathah kshatriyarshabhah ॥ 13.28॥

praised by them in devotion, vanished that very instant. Thus, having won his boon from the Goddess, Suratha, bull among kshatriyas,

13.29

sūryājjanma samāsādya sāvarṇirbhavitā manuḥ ॥ 13.29॥

sūryājjanma samāsādya sāvarnirbhavitā manuh ॥ 13.29॥

shall obtain birth from the Sun, and shall become the Manu Savarni.

evaṁ devyā varaṁ labdhvā surathaḥ kṣatriyarṣabhaḥ ।
sūryājjanma samāsādya sāvarṇirbhavitā manuḥ ॥ klīṁ ॐ ॥

evam devyā varam labdhvā surathah kshatriyarshabhah ।
sūryājjanma samāsādya sāvarnirbhavitā manuh ॥ klīm ॐ ॥

Thus, having won his boon from the Goddess, Suratha, bull among kshatriyas, shall obtain birth from the Sun and become the Manu Savarni. — Klim Om.

Uvachas 6, half-shlokas 11, shlokas 12 — thus 700 in all from the beginning. In sum: uvacha-mantras 57, half-shlokas 42, shlokas 535, avadanas 66. Here the Shri Saptashati Devi-Mahatmya is complete.
