Let me meditate on Matangi — seated on a jewelled throne, listening to the sweet prattle of a parrot, dark-limbed, one foot resting on a lotus, the moon's digit on her brow, playing upon the vina; garlanded with kalhara blossoms, in a close-fitted shining bodice and jewelled raiment, the conch-cup in her hand, sweetly flushed with wine, her forehead lustrous with its painted mark.

ॐ ṛṣiruvāca ॥ 7.1॥

ॐ rishiruvācha ॥ 7.1॥

Om. The seer said:

7.2

ājñaptāste tato daityāścaṇḍamuṇḍapurogamāḥ ।
caturaṅgabalopetā yayurabhyudyatāyudhāḥ ॥ 7.2॥

āgyaptāste tato daityāshchandamundapurogamāh ।
chaturangabalopetā yayurabhyudyatāyudhāh ॥ 7.2॥

So commanded, those daityas, with Chanda and Munda at their head, marched forth with their fourfold host, weapons upraised.

7.3

dadṛśuste tato devīmīṣaddhāsāṁ vyavasthitām ।
siṁhasyopari śailendraśa‍ṛṅge mahati kāñcane ॥ 7.3॥

dadrishuste tato devīmīshaddhāsām vyavasthitām ।
simhasyopari shailendrasharinge mahati kānchane ॥ 7.3॥

There they beheld the Goddess, faintly smiling, seated upon the lion on a great golden peak of the king of mountains.

7.4

te dṛṣṭvā tāṁ samādātumudyamaṁ cakrurudyatāḥ ।
ākṛṣṭacāpāsidharāstathānye tatsamīpagāḥ ॥ 7.4॥

te drishtvā tām samādātumudyamam chakrurudyatāh ।
ākrishtachāpāsidharāstathānye tatsamīpagāh ॥ 7.4॥

Seeing her, they made eager effort to seize her; and others drew near to her, bows drawn and swords out.

7.5

tataḥ kopaṁ cakāroccairambikā tānarīnprati ।
kopena cāsyā vadanaṁ maṣīvarṇamabhūttadā ॥ 7.5॥

tatah kopam chakārochchairambikā tānarīnprati ।
kopena chāsyā vadanam mashīvarnamabhūttadā ॥ 7.5॥

Then Ambika grew mightily wrathful against those foes; and with her wrath her face turned then black as ink.

7.6

bhrukuṭīkuṭilāttasyā lalāṭaphalakāddrutam ।

bhrukutīkutilāttasyā lalātaphalakāddrutam ।
kālī karālavadanā vinishkrāntāsipāshinī ॥ 7.6॥

From the slab of her forehead, knit with frowning brows, there sprang forth at once Kali of the dreadful face, bearing sword and noose —

7.7

vicitrakhaṭvāṅgadharā naramālāvibhūṣaṇā ।
dvīpicarmaparīdhānā śuṣkamāṁsātibhairavā ॥ 7.7॥

vichitrakhatvāngadharā naramālāvibhūshanā ।
dvīpicharmaparīdhānā shushkamāmsātibhairavā ॥ 7.7॥

विचित्र खट्वांग धारण किये, नरमुण्डों की माला से विभूषित, चीते की खाल पहने, सूखे मांस से अति भयंकर (दिखती हुई);

bearing the strange skull-topped staff, garlanded with human heads, clad in a tiger's skin, most terrible with her shrunken flesh;

7.8

ativistāravadanā jihvālalanabhīṣaṇā ।
nimagnāraktanayanā nādāpūritadiṅmukhā ॥ 7.8॥

ativistāravadanā jihvālalanabhīshanā ।
nimagnāraktanayanā nādāpūritadinmukhā ॥ 7.8॥

her mouth gaping wide, fearsome with her lolling tongue, her sunken eyes glowing red, filling the quarters of the sky with her roars.

7.9

sā vegenābhipatitā ghātayantī mahāsurān ।
sainye tatra surārīṇāmabhakṣayata tadbalam ॥ 7.9॥

sā vegenābhipatitā ghātayantī mahāsurān ।
sainye tatra surārīnāmabhakshayata tadbalam ॥ 7.9॥

She fell upon them with fury, slaughtering the great asuras, and in that army of the gods' foes began to devour the host.

7.10

pārṣṇigrāhāṅkuśagrāhayodhaghaṇṭāsamanvitān ।
samādāyaikahastena mukhe cikṣepa vāraṇān ॥ 7.10॥

pārshnigrāhānkushagrāhayodhaghantāsamanvitān ।
samādāyaikahastena mukhe chikshepa vāranān ॥ 7.10॥

Seizing with a single hand the elephants — with their rear-guards, their goad-bearing drivers, their warriors and bells — she flung them into her mouth.

7.11

tathaiva yodhaṁ turagai rathaṁ sārathinā saha ।
nikṣipya vaktre daśanaiścarvayantyatibhairavam ॥ 7.11॥

tathaiva yodham turagai ratham sārathinā saha ।
nikshipya vaktre dashanaishcharvayantyatibhairavam ॥ 7.11॥

Likewise tossing into her mouth warrior with horses, and chariot with charioteer, she ground them most frightfully with her teeth.

7.12

ekaṁ jagrāha keśeṣu grīvāyāmatha cāparam ।
pādenākramya caivānyamurasānyamapothayat ॥ 7.12॥

ekam jagrāha kesheshu grīvāyāmatha chāparam ।
pādenākramya chaivānyamurasānyamapothayat ॥ 7.12॥

One she seized by the hair, another by the neck; one she crushed under her foot, another she ground against her breast.

7.13

tairmuktāni ca śastrāṇi mahāstrāṇi tathāsuraiḥ ।
mukhena jagrāha ruṣā daśanairmathitānyapi ॥ 7.13॥

tairmuktāni cha shastrāni mahāstrāni tathāsuraih ।
mukhena jagrāha rushā dashanairmathitānyapi ॥ 7.13॥

And the weapons and great missiles hurled by those asuras she caught in her mouth in her rage, and ground them up with her teeth.

7.14

balināṁ tadbalaṁ sarvamasurāṇāṁ durātmanām ।
mamardābhakṣayaccānyānanyāṁścātāḍayattadā ॥ 7.14॥

balinām tadbalam sarvamasurānām durātmanām ।
mamardābhakshayachchānyānanyāmshchātādayattadā ॥ 7.14॥

All that host of the strong and evil-souled asuras she crushed; some she devoured, and others she battered then and there.

7.15

asinā nihatāḥ kecitkecitkhaṭvāṅgatāḍitāḥ ।
jagmurvināśamasurā dantāgrābhihatāstathā ॥ 7.15॥

asinā nihatāh kechitkechitkhatvāngatāditāh ।
jagmurvināshamasurā dantāgrābhihatāstathā ॥ 7.15॥

Some were slain by her sword, some struck down by the skull-staff; and other asuras went to their destruction gored by the points of her teeth.

7.16

kṣaṇena tadbalaṁ sarvamasurāṇāṁ nipātitam ।
dṛṣṭvā caṇḍo'bhidudrāva tāṁ kālīmatibhīṣaṇām ॥ 7.16॥

kshanena tadbalam sarvamasurānām nipātitam ।
drishtvā chando'bhidudrāva tām kālīmatibhīshanām ॥ 7.16॥

Seeing that whole army of the asuras felled in a moment, Chanda rushed upon that most terrifying Kali.

7.17

śaravarṣairmahābhīmairbhīmākṣīṁ tāṁ mahāsuraḥ ।
chādayāmāsa cakraiśca muṇḍaḥ kṣiptaiḥ sahasraśaḥ ॥ 7.17॥

sharavarshairmahābhīmairbhīmākshīm tām mahāsurah ।
chhādayāmāsa chakraishcha mundah kshiptaih sahasrashah ॥ 7.17॥

That great asura covered the dread-eyed one with most terrible showers of arrows, and Munda with discuses hurled by the thousand.

7.18

tāni cakrāṇyanekāni viśamānāni tanmukham ।
babhuryathārkabimbāni subahūni ghanodaram ॥ 7.18॥

tāni chakrānyanekāni vishamānāni tanmukham ।
babhuryathārkabimbāni subahūni ghanodaram ॥ 7.18॥

Those many discuses, vanishing into her mouth, gleamed like so many orbs of the sun passing into the belly of a cloud.

7.19

tato jahāsātiruṣā bhīmaṁ bhairavanādinī ।
kālī karālavadanā durdarśadaśanojjvalā ॥ 7.19॥

tato jahāsātirushā bhīmam bhairavanādinī ।
kālī karālavadanā durdarshadashanojjvalā ॥ 7.19॥

Then Kali of the dreadful face, she of the terrifying roar, laughed a fearsome laugh in her towering rage, her hardly-to-be-looked-on teeth blazing.

7.20

utthāya ca mahāsiṁhaṁ devī caṇḍamadhāvata ।
gṛhītvā cāsya keśeṣu śirastenāsinācchinat ॥ 7.20॥

utthāya cha mahāsimham devī chandamadhāvata ।
grihītvā chāsya kesheshu shirastenāsināchchhinat ॥ 7.20॥

And mounting her great lion, the Goddess charged at Chanda; seizing him by the hair, she severed his head with that same sword.

7.21

atha muṇḍo'bhyadhāvattāṁ dṛṣṭvā caṇḍaṁ nipātitam ।
tamapyapātayadbhūmau sā khaḍgābhihataṁ ruṣā ॥ 7.21॥

atha mundo'bhyadhāvattām drishtvā chandam nipātitam ।
tamapyapātayadbhūmau sā khadgābhihatam rushā ॥ 7.21॥

Then Munda, seeing Chanda laid low, rushed at her; him too she felled to the earth, struck with her sword in fury.

7.22

hataśeṣaṁ tataḥ sainyaṁ dṛṣṭvā caṇḍaṁ nipātitam ।
muṇḍaṁ ca sumahāvīryaṁ diśo bheje bhayāturam ॥ 7.22॥

hatashesham tatah sainyam drishtvā chandam nipātitam ।
mundam cha sumahāvīryam disho bheje bhayāturam ॥ 7.22॥

Then the remnant of the army, seeing Chanda fallen, and Munda too of so great valour, fled panic-stricken to every quarter.

7.23

śiraścaṇḍasya kālī ca gṛhītvā muṇḍameva ca ।
prāha pracaṇḍāṭṭahāsamiśramabhyetya caṇḍikām ॥ 7.23॥

shirashchandasya kālī cha grihītvā mundameva cha ।
prāha prachandāttahāsamishramabhyetya chandikām ॥ 7.23॥

And Kali, taking the head of Chanda and Munda's too, came to Chandika and spoke, her words mingled with a tremendous laugh:

7.24

mayā tavātropahṛtau caṇḍamuṇḍau mahāpaśū ।
yuddhayajñe svayaṁ śumbhaṁ niśumbhaṁ ca haniṣyasi ॥ 7.24॥

mayā tavātropahritau chandamundau mahāpashū ।
yuddhayagye svayam shumbham nishumbham cha hanishyasi ॥ 7.24॥

'Here, in the sacrifice of battle, I have brought you Chanda and Munda as two great beasts of offering; Shumbha and Nishumbha you shall slay yourself.'

7.25

ṛṣiruvāca ॥ 7.25॥

rishiruvācha ॥ 7.25॥

The seer said:

7.26

tāvānītau tato dṛṣṭvā caṇḍamuṇḍau mahāsurau ।
uvāca kālīṁ kalyāṇī lalitaṁ caṇḍikā vacaḥ ॥ 7.26॥

tāvānītau tato drishtvā chandamundau mahāsurau ।
uvācha kālīm kalyānī lalitam chandikā vachah ॥ 7.26॥

Then, seeing the two great asuras Chanda and Munda brought before her, the gracious Chandika spoke to Kali these winsome words:

7.27

yasmāccaṇḍaṁ ca muṇḍaṁ ca gṛhītvā tvamupāgatā ।
cāmuṇḍeti tato loke khyātā devī bhaviṣyasi ॥ 7.27॥

yasmāchchandam cha mundam cha grihītvā tvamupāgatā ।
chāmundeti tato loke khyātā devī bhavishyasi ॥ 7.27॥

'Because you have come to me bearing Chanda and Munda, you, O Goddess, shall be famed in the world as Chamunda.'

Samāpti

Thus, in the Markandeya Purana, in the account of the Savarnika Manvantara, in the Devi Mahatmya, ends the seventh chapter, named 'The Slaying of Chanda and Munda'. Uvachas 2, shlokas 25 — thus 439 in all from the beginning.
