What is Mangal Dosha?
Mars is a fiery, assertive planet. When it falls in any of the six houses above — measured from the Lagna (and, in many traditions, also from the Moon and from Venus) — the chart is said to carry Mangal Dosha, and the person is called Manglik. The 7th and 8th houses (marriage and longevity of marriage) are watched most closely.
The houses that count
- 1st house — temperament and the self
- 2nd house — family and speech
- 4th house — domestic peace
- 7th house — spouse and partnership
- 8th house — longevity and in-laws
- 12th house — bed comforts and expenses
Traditional effects
Classical texts associate Mangal Dosha with delays in marriage, friction between partners, or a strong-willed temperament. Crucially, the dosha is considered far milder — or fully cancelled when Mars is strong and well-placed, when both partners are Manglik, or when benefic aspects intervene.
Remedies (upaya)
- Recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa and worship of Hanuman, the deity who governs Mars.
- Mangal Shanti puja and Tuesday fasting, undertaken sincerely.
- Manglik-to-Manglik matching, which is widely held to neutralise the dosha.
- Gemstones (red coral) only on the specific advice of an astrologer — never self-prescribed.

Frequently asked questions
Is being Manglik bad?
Not inherently. Mangal Dosha is common and is considered mild or cancelled in many charts. It is one factor among many, not a verdict on a person or a marriage.
Can a Manglik marry a non-Manglik?
Yes. Astrologers assess the strength and placement of Mars and the overall compatibility; remedies and well-placed benefics can offset the dosha.
How is Mangal Dosha cancelled?
Common cancellations include both partners being Manglik, Mars being strong in its own or exalted sign, or benefic planets aspecting the relevant houses.
How do I check if I am Manglik?
It requires your exact date, time and place of birth to cast the chart and locate Mars. A personalised reading is the reliable way to confirm it.
Note: Vedic astrology is a tradition of interpretation, not a guarantee of outcomes. Readings vary between astrologers; treat the above as guidance and consult a qualified practitioner for your specific chart.
