Durga Saptashati — Chandika Dhyanam

Opening dhyāna of the Durga Saptashati (Sanskrit)

The pair of dhyāna-verses that stand at the head of the Saptashati text: the first picturing the Goddess seated on five skulls, three-eyed and red-robed, bearing book, rosary and the boon and fearlessness gestures; the second (the sragdharā "yā chaṇḍī") invoking her by her great deeds against Madhu-Kaitabha, Mahisha, Dhumralochana, Chanda-Munda, Raktabija and Shumbha-Nishumbha.

Dhyānam

Radiant as the bandhuka flower, dwelling upon the five skulls, her crown set with a flashing crescent and with gems, garlanded with severed heads; three-eyed, robed in red, her breasts full and high as rounded jars; bearing in order the book, the rosary, and the gestures of boon and of fearlessness — let one ever contemplate her, honoured in the Uttara-amnaya.

athavā
yā caṇḍī madhukaiṭabhādidaityadalanī yā māhiṣonmūlinī
yā dhūmrekṣaṇacaṇḍamuṇḍamathanī yā raktabījāśanī ।
śaktiḥ śumbhaniśumbhadaityadalanī yā siddhidātrī parā
sā devī navakoṭimūrtisahitā māṁ pātu viśveśvarī ॥

athavā
yā chandī madhukaitabhādidaityadalanī yā māhishonmūlinī
yā dhūmrekshanachandamundamathanī yā raktabījāshanī ।
shaktih shumbhanishumbhadaityadalanī yā siddhidātrī parā
sā devī navakotimūrtisahitā mām pātu vishveshvarī ॥

Or thus: She, Chandi, crusher of Madhu, Kaitabha and the other daityas, uprooter of Mahisha; she who ground down Dhumralochana, Chanda and Munda, who devoured Raktabija; the supreme Shakti who destroyed the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha, the giver of attainment — may that Goddess, Empress of the universe, attended by her ninety million forms, protect me.
