Dhyānam
ॐ नागाधीश्वरविष्टरां फणिफणोत्तंसोरु रत्नावली-
भास्वद्देहलतां दिवाकरनिभां नेत्रत्रयोद्भासिताम् ।
मालाकुम्भकपालनीरजकरां चन्द्रार्धचूडां परां
सर्वज्ञेश्वरभैरवाङ्गनिलयां पद्मावतीं चिन्तये ॥
ॐ nāgādhīśvaraviṣṭarāṁ phaṇiphaṇottaṁsoru ratnāvalī-
bhāsvaddehalatāṁ divākaranibhāṁ netratrayodbhāsitām ।
mālākumbhakapālanīrajakarāṁ candrārdhacūḍāṁ parāṁ
sarvajñeśvarabhairavāṅganilayāṁ padmāvatīṁ cintaye ॥
ॐ nāgādhīshvaravishtarām phaniphanottamsoru ratnāvalī-
bhāsvaddehalatām divākaranibhām netratrayodbhāsitām ।
mālākumbhakapālanīrajakarām chandrārdhachūdām parām
sarvagyeshvarabhairavānganilayām padmāvatīm chintaye ॥
जो नागराज (शेष) के आसन पर विराजमान हैं; सर्पों के फणों के आभूषणों और विशाल रत्नावली से जिनकी देह-लता दमक रही है; जो सूर्य के समान (तेजोमयी) और तीन नेत्रों से उद्भासित हैं; जिनके हाथों में माला, कुम्भ (कलश), कपाल और कमल हैं; जिनके मस्तक पर अर्धचन्द्र (शोभित) है; जो परा हैं और सर्वज्ञ ईश्वर भैरव के अंग में निवास करती हैं — उन पद्मावती (देवी) का मैं चिन्तन करता हूँ।
I meditate on Padmavati — throned on the lord of serpents, her vine-like body gleaming with the crest-ornaments of serpent hoods and great ropes of gems, bright as the day-maker, lit by her three eyes; bearing in her hands the rosary, the pitcher, the skull-bowl and the lotus; the half-moon her crest; the supreme one, who dwells upon the body of the all-knowing Lord Bhairava.
6.1 ॐ ऋषिरुवाच ॥ ६.१॥

Om. The seer said:
6.2 इत्याकर्ण्य वचो देव्याः स दूतोऽमर्षपूरितः ।
समाचष्ट समागम्य दैत्यराजाय विस्तरात् ॥ ६.२॥
ityākarṇya vaco devyāḥ sa dūto'marṣapūritaḥ ।
samācaṣṭa samāgamya daityarājāya vistarāt ॥ 6.2॥
ityākarnya vacho devyāh sa dūto'marshapūritah ।
samāchashta samāgamya daityarājāya vistarāt ॥ 6.2॥
देवी का यह वचन सुनकर वह दूत अमर्ष (क्षुब्ध क्रोध) से भर गया, और (लौटकर) दैत्यराज के पास जाकर (उसने सब) विस्तार से कह सुनाया।
Hearing these words of the Goddess, that envoy, filled with indignation, returned to the daitya king and reported all at length.
6.3 तस्य दूतस्य तद्वाक्यमाकर्ण्यासुरराट् ततः ।
सक्रोधः प्राह दैत्यानामधिपं धूम्रलोचनम् ॥ ६.३॥
tasya dūtasya tadvākyamākarṇyāsurarāṭ tataḥ ।
sakrodhaḥ prāha daityānāmadhipaṁ dhūmralocanam ॥ 6.3॥
tasya dūtasya tadvākyamākarnyāsurarāt tatah ।
sakrodhah prāha daityānāmadhipam dhūmralochanam ॥ 6.3॥
उस दूत का वह वचन सुनकर असुरों का राजा (शुम्भ) तब क्रोध में भरकर दैत्यों के अधिप धूम्रलोचन से बोला —
Hearing that speech of his envoy, the king of asuras, enraged, then said to Dhumralochana, a chieftain of the daityas:
6.4 हे धूम्रलोचनाशु त्वं स्वसैन्यपरिवारितः ।
तामानय बलाद्दुष्टां केशाकर्षणविह्वलाम् ॥ ६.४॥
he dhūmralocanāśu tvaṁ svasainyaparivāritaḥ ।
tāmānaya balādduṣṭāṁ keśākarṣaṇavihvalām ॥ 6.4॥
he dhūmralochanāshu tvam svasainyaparivāritah ।
tāmānaya balāddushtām keshākarshanavihvalām ॥ 6.4॥
'हे धूम्रलोचन! तू अपनी सेना से घिरा हुआ शीघ्र (जा), और उस दुष्टा को — केश खींचे जाने से विह्वल (करके) — बलपूर्वक ले आ।
'Ho Dhumralochana — go quickly, ringed with your army, and fetch that vixen by force, distraught with the dragging of her hair.
6.5 तत्परित्राणदः कश्चिद्यदि वोत्तिष्ठतेऽपरः ।
स हन्तव्योऽमरो वापि यक्षो गन्धर्व एव वा ॥ ६.५॥
tatparitrāṇadaḥ kaścidyadi vottiṣṭhate'paraḥ ।
sa hantavyo'maro vāpi yakṣo gandharva eva vā ॥ 6.5॥
tatparitrānadah kashchidyadi vottishthate'parah ।
sa hantavyo'maro vāpi yaksho gandharva eva vā ॥ 6.5॥
और यदि उसकी रक्षा करने वाला कोई दूसरा (बीच में) उठ खड़ा हो — चाहे वह अमर (देवता) हो, यक्ष हो या गन्धर्व ही क्यों न हो — तो वह (भी) मार डाला जाये।'
And should any other rise up as her protector — be he immortal, yaksha, or very gandharva — let him be slain.'
6.6 ऋषिरुवाच ॥ ६.६॥

ऋषि बोले —
The seer said:
6.7 तेनाज्ञप्तस्ततः शीघ्रं स दैत्यो धूम्रलोचनः ।
वृतः षष्ट्या सहस्राणामसुराणां द्रुतं ययौ ॥ ६.७॥
tenājñaptastataḥ śīghraṁ sa daityo dhūmralocanaḥ ।
vṛtaḥ ṣaṣṭyā sahasrāṇāmasurāṇāṁ drutaṁ yayau ॥ 6.7॥
tenāgyaptastatah shīghram sa daityo dhūmralochanah ।
vritah shashtyā sahasrānāmasurānām drutam yayau ॥ 6.7॥
उसकी आज्ञा पाकर वह दैत्य धूम्रलोचन तब साठ हजार असुरों (की सेना) से घिरा हुआ तुरन्त (वहाँ) गया।
So commanded by him, that daitya Dhumralochana went swiftly forth, ringed by sixty thousand asuras.
6.8 स दृष्ट्वा तां ततो देवीं तुहिनाचलसंस्थिताम् ।
जगादोच्चैः प्रयाहीति मूलं शुम्भनिशुम्भयोः ॥ ६.८॥
sa dṛṣṭvā tāṁ tato devīṁ tuhinācalasaṁsthitām ।
jagādoccaiḥ prayāhīti mūlaṁ śumbhaniśumbhayoḥ ॥ 6.8॥
sa drishtvā tām tato devīm tuhināchalasamsthitām ।
jagādochchaih prayāhīti mūlam shumbhanishumbhayoh ॥ 6.8॥
वहाँ हिम-पर्वत पर विराजमान उन देवी को देखकर उसने ऊँचे स्वर में कहा — 'शुम्भ और निशुम्भ के पास चल!
Beholding there the Goddess seated on the snowy mountain, he called aloud: 'Away with you to the presence of Shumbha and Nishumbha!
6.9 न चेत्प्रीत्याद्य भवती मद्भर्तारमुपैष्यति ।
ततो बलान्नयाम्येष केशाकर्षणविह्वलाम् ॥ ६.९॥
na cetprītyādya bhavatī madbhartāramupaiṣyati ।
tato balānnayāmyeṣa keśākarṣaṇavihvalām ॥ 6.9॥
na chetprītyādya bhavatī madbhartāramupaishyati ।
tato balānnayāmyesha keshākarshanavihvalām ॥ 6.9॥
यदि आज तू प्रसन्नता से मेरे स्वामी के पास नहीं चलेगी, तो (मैं) यह (खड़ा) बलपूर्वक — केश खींचे जाने से विह्वल (करके) — तुझे ले चलूँगा।'
If you will not go this day in good grace to my master, then I here shall take you by force, frantic with the dragging of your hair.'
6.10 देव्युवाच ॥ ६.१०॥

देवी बोलीं —
The Goddess said:
6.11 दैत्येश्वरेण प्रहितो बलवान्बलसंवृतः ।
बलान्नयसि मामेवं ततः किं ते करोम्यहम् ॥ ६.११॥
daityeśvareṇa prahito balavānbalasaṁvṛtaḥ ।
balānnayasi māmevaṁ tataḥ kiṁ te karomyaham ॥ 6.11॥
daityeshvarena prahito balavānbalasamvritah ।
balānnayasi māmevam tatah kim te karomyaham ॥ 6.11॥
'दैत्यों के ईश्वर ने (तुझे) भेजा है; (तू स्वयं) बलवान है और सेना से घिरा है — (ऐसी दशा में) यदि तू मुझे इस प्रकार बलपूर्वक ले ही चलेगा, तो (भला) मैं तेरा क्या करूँ?'
'Sent by the lord of daityas, strong, and girt about with an army — if you carry me off thus by force, what then am I to do to you?'
6.12 ऋषिरुवाच ॥ ६.१२॥

ऋषि बोले —
The seer said:
6.13 इत्युक्तः सोऽभ्यधावत्तामसुरो धूम्रलोचनः ।
हुङ्कारेणैव तं भस्म सा चकाराम्बिका तदा ॥ ६.१३॥
ityuktaḥ so'bhyadhāvattāmasuro dhūmralocanaḥ ।
huṅkāreṇaiva taṁ bhasma sā cakārāmbikā tadā ॥ 6.13॥
ityuktah so'bhyadhāvattāmasuro dhūmralochanah ।
hunkārenaiva tam bhasma sā chakārāmbikā tadā ॥ 6.13॥
ऐसा कहे जाने पर वह असुर धूम्रलोचन उन पर झपटा; तब अम्बिका ने (अपने) हुंकार मात्र से ही उसे भस्म कर दिया।
So addressed, the asura Dhumralochana rushed upon her; and Ambika then, with a mere cry of 'Hum', reduced him to ashes.
6.14 अथ क्रुद्धं महासैन्यमसुराणां तथाम्बिका ।
ववर्ष सायकैस्तीक्ष्णैस्तथा शक्तिपरश्वधैः ॥ ६.१४॥
atha kruddhaṁ mahāsainyamasurāṇāṁ tathāmbikā ।
vavarṣa sāyakaistīkṣṇaistathā śaktiparaśvadhaiḥ ॥ 6.14॥
atha kruddham mahāsainyamasurānām tathāmbikā ।
vavarsha sāyakaistīkshnaistathā shaktiparashvadhaih ॥ 6.14॥
तब अम्बिका ने असुरों की उस क्रुद्ध विशाल सेना पर तीखे बाणों, शक्तियों और परशुओं की वर्षा की।
Then upon the enraged great army of the asuras Ambika rained sharp arrows, and spears, and axes.
6.15 ततो धुतसटः कोपात्कृत्वा नादं सुभैरवम् ।
पपातासुरसेनायां सिंहो देव्याः स्ववाहनः ॥ ६.१५॥
tato dhutasaṭaḥ kopātkṛtvā nādaṁ subhairavam ।
papātāsurasenāyāṁ siṁho devyāḥ svavāhanaḥ ॥ 6.15॥
tato dhutasatah kopātkritvā nādam subhairavam ।
papātāsurasenāyām simho devyāh svavāhanah ॥ 6.15॥
तब देवी का अपना वाहन सिंह क्रोध से अयाल हिलाकर, अति भैरव (भयंकर) नाद करके असुर-सेना पर टूट पड़ा।
Then the lion, the Goddess's own mount, shaking his mane in wrath and uttering a most dreadful roar, fell upon the asura army.
6.16 कांश्चित्करप्रहारेण दैत्यानास्येन चापरान् ।
आक्रान्त्या चाधरेणान्यान् जघान स महासुरान् ॥ ६.१६॥
kāṁścitkaraprahāreṇa daityānāsyena cāparān ।
ākrāntyā cādhareṇānyān jaghāna sa mahāsurān ॥ 6.16॥
kāmshchitkaraprahārena daityānāsyena chāparān ।
ākrāntyā chādharenānyān jaghāna sa mahāsurān ॥ 6.16॥
उस (सिंह) ने कितने ही दैत्यों को पंजे के प्रहार से, दूसरों को मुख से, और अन्य महासुरों को (अपने) पिछले भाग से कुचलकर (आक्रान्त करके) मार डाला।
Some daityas he slew with the stroke of his paw, others with his mouth, and other great asuras by trampling them beneath his hindquarters.
6.17 केषाञ्चित्पाटयामास नखैः कोष्ठानि केसरी ।
तथा तलप्रहारेण शिरांसि कृतवान्पृथक् ॥ ६.१७॥
keṣāñcitpāṭayāmāsa nakhaiḥ koṣṭhāni kesarī ।
tathā talaprahāreṇa śirāṁsi kṛtavānpṛthak ॥ 6.17॥
keshānchitpātayāmāsa nakhaih koshthāni kesarī ।
tathā talaprahārena shirāmsi kritavānprithak ॥ 6.17॥
केसरी (सिंह) ने किन्हीं के कोष्ठ (पेट) नखों से फाड़ डाले, तथा थप्पड़ (पंजे) की मार से (किन्हीं के) सिर धड़ से अलग कर दिये।
Some the lion ripped open at the belly with his claws; and with slaps of his paw he struck heads clean from bodies.
6.18 विच्छिन्नबाहुशिरसः कृतास्तेन तथापरे ।
पपौ च रुधिरं कोष्ठादन्येषां धुतकेसरः ॥ ६.१८॥
vicchinnabāhuśirasaḥ kṛtāstena tathāpare ।
papau ca rudhiraṁ koṣṭhādanyeṣāṁ dhutakesaraḥ ॥ 6.18॥
vichchhinnabāhushirasah kritāstena tathāpare ।
papau cha rudhiram koshthādanyeshām dhutakesarah ॥ 6.18॥
उसने वैसे ही दूसरों की भुजाएँ और सिर काटकर अलग कर दिये; और अयाल हिलाता हुआ वह अन्यों के कोष्ठ (वक्ष) से रक्त पीने लगा।
Others he left with arms and heads shorn away; and shaking his mane, he drank the blood from the breasts of others still.
6.19 क्षणेन तद्बलं सर्वं क्षयं नीतं महात्मना ।
तेन केसरिणा देव्या वाहनेनातिकोपिना ॥ ६.१९॥
kṣaṇena tadbalaṁ sarvaṁ kṣayaṁ nītaṁ mahātmanā ।
tena kesariṇā devyā vāhanenātikopinā ॥ 6.19॥
kshanena tadbalam sarvam kshayam nītam mahātmanā ।
tena kesarinā devyā vāhanenātikopinā ॥ 6.19॥
देवी के उस अति-कुपित वाहन — महात्मा केसरी — ने क्षण भर में वह सारी सेना नष्ट कर दी।
In a moment that whole force was brought to destruction by the great-souled lion, the Goddess's mount, in his exceeding wrath.
6.20 श्रुत्वा तमसुरं देव्या निहतं धूम्रलोचनम् ।
बलं च क्षयितं कृत्स्नं देवीकेसरिणा ततः ॥ ६.२०॥
śrutvā tamasuraṁ devyā nihataṁ dhūmralocanam ।
balaṁ ca kṣayitaṁ kṛtsnaṁ devīkesariṇā tataḥ ॥ 6.20॥
shrutvā tamasuram devyā nihatam dhūmralochanam ।
balam cha kshayitam kritsnam devīkesarinā tatah ॥ 6.20॥
देवी के द्वारा उस असुर धूम्रलोचन के मारे जाने और देवी के केसरी द्वारा (उसकी) सम्पूर्ण सेना के नष्ट किये जाने का (समाचार) सुनकर,
Hearing then that the asura Dhumralochana had been slain by the Goddess, and his whole army destroyed by the Goddess's lion,
6.21 चुकोप दैत्याधिपतिः शुम्भः प्रस्फुरिताधरः ।
आज्ञापयामास च तौ चण्डमुण्डौ महासुरौ ॥ ६.२१॥
cukopa daityādhipatiḥ śumbhaḥ prasphuritādharaḥ ।
ājñāpayāmāsa ca tau caṇḍamuṇḍau mahāsurau ॥ 6.21॥
chukopa daityādhipatih shumbhah prasphuritādharah ।
āgyāpayāmāsa cha tau chandamundau mahāsurau ॥ 6.21॥
दैत्यों का अधिपति शुम्भ क्रोधित हो उठा — (क्रोध से उसका) अधर (होंठ) फड़कने लगा — और उसने उन दोनों महासुरों चण्ड और मुण्ड को आज्ञा दी —
the lord of daityas, Shumbha, blazed with anger, his lip a-quiver, and commanded the two great asuras Chanda and Munda:
6.22 हे चण्ड हे मुण्ड बलैर्बहुभिः परिवारितौ ।
तत्र गच्छत गत्वा च सा समानीयतां लघु ॥ ६.२२॥
he caṇḍa he muṇḍa balairbahubhiḥ parivāritau ।
tatra gacchata gatvā ca sā samānīyatāṁ laghu ॥ 6.22॥
he chanda he munda balairbahubhih parivāritau ।
tatra gachchhata gatvā cha sā samānīyatām laghu ॥ 6.22॥
'हे चण्ड! हे मुण्ड! बहुत-सी सेनाएँ साथ लेकर वहाँ जाओ, और जाकर उसे शीघ्र ले आओ —
'Ho Chanda! Ho Munda! Go there ringed with many hosts; and going, let her be brought quickly —
6.23 केशेष्वाकृष्य बद्ध्वा वा यदि वः संशयो युधि ।
तदाशेषायुधैः सर्वैरसुरैर्विनिहन्यताम् ॥ ६.२३॥
keśeṣvākṛṣya baddhvā vā yadi vaḥ saṁśayo yudhi ।
tadāśeṣāyudhaiḥ sarvairasurairvinihanyatām ॥ 6.23॥
kesheshvākrishya baddhvā vā yadi vah samshayo yudhi ।
tadāsheshāyudhaih sarvairasurairvinihanyatām ॥ 6.23॥
केश पकड़कर खींचते हुए, या बाँधकर; और यदि तुम्हें युद्ध में (विजय का) संशय हो, तो समस्त असुरों द्वारा सब हथियारों से वह मार डाली जाये।
dragged by the hair, or bound. And if you have doubt of the issue in fight, then let her be slain by all the asuras with every weapon.
6.24 तस्यां हतायां दुष्टायां सिंहे च विनिपातिते ।
शीघ्रमागम्यतां बद्ध्वा गृहीत्वा तामथाम्बिकाम् ॥ ६.२४॥
tasyāṁ hatāyāṁ duṣṭāyāṁ siṁhe ca vinipātite ।
śīghramāgamyatāṁ baddhvā gṛhītvā tāmathāmbikām ॥ 6.24॥
tasyām hatāyām dushtāyām simhe cha vinipātite ।
shīghramāgamyatām baddhvā grihītvā tāmathāmbikām ॥ 6.24॥
उस दुष्टा के मारे जाने और (उसके) सिंह के गिरा दिये जाने पर, उस अम्बिका को बाँधकर, लेकर शीघ्र (यहाँ) लौट आओ।'
And when that vixen is slain and her lion struck down, bind that Ambika, take her, and come back with speed.'

इस प्रकार श्रीमार्कण्डेय पुराण में, सावर्णिक मन्वन्तर (की कथा) में, देवीमाहात्म्य में 'शुम्भ-निशुम्भ के सेनापति धूम्रलोचन का वध' नामक षष्ठ अध्याय (सम्पूर्ण हुआ)। (इसमें) उवाच ४ — (कुल) श्लोक २४; इस प्रकार आदि से (कुल) ४१२ (मन्त्र हुए)।
Thus, in the Markandeya Purana, in the account of the Savarnika Manvantara, in the Devi Mahatmya, ends the sixth chapter, named 'The Slaying of Dhumralochana, General of Shumbha and Nishumbha'. Uvachas 4 — 24 shlokas in this chapter; thus 412 in all from the beginning.
